The four texts published here provide different perspectives on the relationship between evangelicalism and the Church during that time, illustrating the diversity of the tradition. Hannah More's correspondence during the Blagdon controversyilluminates the struggles of Evangelicals at the end of the eighteenth century, as she attempted to establish schools for poor children. The charges of Bishops Ryder and Ryle in 1816 and 1881 respectively reveal the views of Evangelicals who, at either end of the nineteenth century, had a forum for expressing their views from the pinnacle of the church establishment. The major text, the undergraduate diary of Francis Chavasse [1865-8], also written by a future bishop, provides a fascinating insight into the mind of a young Evangelical at Oxford, struggling with his conscience and his calling. Were it impossible for a man to come to a clear determination on this subject?to a rationally safe conclusion touching his spiritual state; were it entirely out of his power, after the most faithful self-examination, to know whether or not he is enrolled among the soldiers of the cross, and the destined heirs of Heaven's incorruptible crowns, it would be but lost labour for him to try to gain that knowledge. God requires no impossibilities; therefore in that case self-investigation would be no duty, and man would have nothing to do, but to live in suspense, and between the painful alternations of hope and fear, to the end of his day. But the thing is not so. Assurance of salvation is attainable?a privilege belonging to earth?to themilitant portion of the Church of Christ. The believer need not be continually in dread and apprehension as to his destiny beyond the tomb. He may arrive at a heart-consoling persuasion, that he shall be a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed. I know my sheep, and am known of mine. That the believer may know that he is in the favor of God, is clear from God's promises. Whatever God engages to do he never fails to accomplish. None of his words fall to the ground. It is weak and fickle man that saith, and doeth not, and not the immutable God. Jehovah's promises are as sure as they are precious, being yea and Amen in Christ Jesns to the glory of his grace.
