Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume includes a final group of preeminent, identified artists from the period of transition at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. Artistic production at this time was still rooted in late medieval thought, yet more and more seized with new renaissance developments, and at a permanent state of ferment with constantly changing needs of society. The catalogue deals with correspondingly complex issues of interpretation through the works of Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Bouts, Gerard David, Colijn de Coter and Goossen van der Weyden. It comprises a technical, stylistic and iconographical investigation of seventeen paintings on the basis of a scientific research method, which has been fully established over the years. The authors have been able to adjust various attributions and interpretations. At the same time most valuable discoveries have been made with regard to the provenance of some work belonging to the Albrecht Bouts and Colijn de Coter Groups.

Book The Flemish Primitives in Bruges

Download or read book The Flemish Primitives in Bruges written by Till-Holger Borchert and published by Ludion Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five centuries ago, Bruges was home to the Flemish Primitives. At the time, Bruges was one of the most important cities in Europe: an international centre of trade and meeting place for foreign merchants. It is this medieval Bruges through which we are guided by Till-Holger Borchert, director of the Bruges Museums. The wealth of the city and its art-loving inhabitants attracted dozens of artists. The pioneers among the socalled Flemish Primitives - Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes and Gerard David - developed a new style of painting over the course of the fifteenth century that would make its influence felt as far as southern Europe. Although many of their paintings now hang among the masterpieces of the world's most prominent museums, Bruges was nevertheless able to hold on to a number of dazzling specimens of its owns heritage. This book allows you to take that heritage home. It is the perfect introduction for those who would like to become better acquainted with the artistic Bruges of the fifteenth centyury, as well as a splendid souvenir for anyone who has admired the Flemish Primitives in the city's main museums. Revised edition in a new layout

Book Colard Mansion

Download or read book Colard Mansion written by Renaud Adam and published by Exhibitions International. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La 4e de couverture indique : "In the late Middle Ages, the time of Charles the Bold and Hans Memling, Bruges was a metropolis of books. One of the central figures in the international book trade was Colard Mansion (active from 1457 to 1484). Initially, in addition to being a valued translator, Mansion was primarily a highly sought-after copyist of luxury manuscripts, but when the art of printing made its entrée in Europe in 1455, he saw his chance and became one of the first in the Low Countries to specialise in the new medium of printed books. In no time, he became one of the most important book entrepreneurs in Bruges and environs. In this book, manuscripts, illuminated incunabula and rare prints bring Mansion's innovative book business back to life. Nearly fifty specialists from around the world offer unique insights into Mansion's life, many aspects of which are shrouded in mystery. Among other things they describe the gradual transition from manuscript to print, explain workshop practices and publishers' strategies, and provide contextual information about late-medieval printmaking and the creation of an impressive oeuvre of literary editions in the vernacular. Mansion developed a brand that remained solid for centuries. This book holds the key to understanding why."

Book excerpt: Bruges painting of the second half of the sixteenth century has long been something of a unknown quantity. The oeuvres of Lancelot Blondeel and Pieter Pourbus may be known but the work of their fellow-painters in Bruges has received scant attention. However, recent scholarly and scientific study of those forgotten masters has greatly advance our knowledge of them. Today, not only do we have a better insight into the work of Pourbus and Blondeel, we can also introduce you to their artistic descendants with the oeuvres of several generations of the Claeissens family and of Marcus Gerards. They were all renowned masters producing works of the utmost quality that secured their high status in the art market. This book provides a necessary update of Bruges art history and place many long-held assumptions in a new light.

Book excerpt: Featuring 20 top pieces from the collection of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, combined with more than 80 exquisite works from collections around the world, this book sheds new light on the depiction of justice from the 15th to the 17th century. This book provides an historical approach that will appeal to both the expert and the art lover. The inclusion of famous pieces, such as 'The Judgment of Cambyses' by Gerard David and 'The Last Judgment' by Pieter Pourbus and Jan Provoost, make this book an homage to art as well as to the practices of law in society. AUTHOR: Vanessa Paumen works at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges as the coordinator of the Flemish Research Center for the Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands. She earned a BA degree, cum laude and an MA degree in Art History, with a focus on European Art at the University of Texas in Austin (USA). In her Master's thesis, 'Judged, Beheaded, Burned: Dieric Bouts, The Justice of Emperor Otto III within the Context of Fifteenth-Century Punitive Practices', she looked at how justice paintings functioned in 15th century Flemish society. 120 colour

Among his most impressive creations are the St John Altarpiece and the St Ursula Shrine, which he created for St John's Hospital in the city.
