When a young boy shows no respect for the deceased, his great-grandmother, an elder sits him and his two companions down to tell them the story of Aroha and Arapeta, the daughter of a chief and the warrior she loved. The story shifts back to the 1880s, as the old orator tells them how Aroha is wrongfully taken when another chief's son is injured, and how Arapeta must go against his chief and century-old customs to get her back. On his travels to find her, Arapeta meets a ragtag bunch of misfits who rally behind him. The seven pull together using their individual skills and wits in an attempt to defeat an entire village and save Aroha from a life of slavery. This story of young lovers tells of undying devotion, deceit, and the evil that burns inside a man who schemes to make Aroha his own. The Greenstone Princess is also about clashing cultures, the dawning of a new era, and the forging of lifelong friendships. About the Author Raymond A. Porter is a martial arts instructor and writer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conversation, sometimes heated, about the influence of Christianity on the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien has a long history. What has been lacking is a forum for a civilized discussion about the topic, as well as a chronological overview of the major arguments and themes that have engaged scholars about the impact of Christianity on Tolkien's oeuvre, with particular reference to The Lord of the Rings. The Ring and the Cross addresses these two needs through an articulate and authoritative analyses of Tolkien's Roman Catholicism and the role it plays in understanding his writings. The volume's contributors deftly explain the kinds of interpretations put forward and evidence marshaled when arguing for or against religious influence. The Ringand the Cross invites readers to draw their own conclusions about a subject that has fascinated Tolkien enthusiasts since the publication of his masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.

Download or read book The Aztec Kings written by Susan D. Gillespie and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the American Society for Ethnohistory's Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin Prize Scholars have long viewed histories of the Aztecs either as flawed chronologies plagued by internal inconsistencies and intersource discrepancies or as legends that indiscriminately mingle reality with the supernatural. But this new work draws fresh conclusions from these documents, proposing that Aztec dynastic history was recast by its sixteenth-century recorders not merely to glorify ancestors but to make sense out of the trauma of conquest and colonialism. The Aztec Kings is the first major study to take into account the Aztec cyclical conception of time—which required that history constantly be reinterpreted to achieve continuity between past and present—and to treat indigenous historical traditions as symbolic statements in narrative form. Susan Gillespie focuses on the dynastic history of the Mexica of Tenochtitlan, whose stories reveal how the Aztecs used "history" to construct, elaborate, and reify ideas about the nature of rulership and the cyclical nature of the cosmos, and how they projected the Spanish conquest deep into the Aztec past in order to make history accommodate that event. By demonstrating that most of Aztec history is nonliteral, she sheds new light on Aztec culture and on the function of history in society. By relating the cyclical structure of Aztec dynastic history to similar traditions of African and Polynesian peoples, she introduces a broader perspective on the function of history in society and on how and why history must change.

An army of three brittle allegiances, united under a rival prince, aims for the throne and lays siege to the castle in search of the princess and the fabled weaponry of the empire. With the aid of her mentor in music and swords, and a desperate cultist sent to find her before before the mercenaries do, Vierrelyne steals that formidable ancient weapon from her family crypt: a holy suit of armor and a diadem infused with the soul of a demon prince--the Bringer of the Scourge. With it, Vierrelyne discovers an unstoppable power, but the demon within is corrosive, hungry, and dangerously persuasive. Vierrelyne is haunted by what it means to tame this power bequeathed to her, and by what means she might conquer it. When that rival prince finds her, it will take all the strength she can muster, for, if the prophecy she dreads is true, the very weapons she wields might destroy everything--and everyone--she holds dear.
