Download or read book The Early Neolithic in Greece written by Catherine Perlès and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farmers made a sudden and dramatic appearance in Greece around 7000 BC, bringing with them new ceramics and crafts, and establishing settled villages. They were Europe's first farmers, and their settlements provide the link between the first agricultural communities in the Near East and the subsequent spread of the new technologies to the Balkans and on to Western Europe. In this 2001 book, Catherine Perlès argues that the stimulus for the spread of agriculture to Europe was a colonisation movement involving small groups of maritime peoples. Drawing evidence from a wide range of archaeological sources, including often neglected 'small finds', and introducing daring new perspectives on funerary rituals and the distribution of figurines, she constructs a complex and subtle picture of early Neolithic societies, overturning the traditional view that these societies were simple and self-sufficient.

New sites offer rich datasets from many aspects of material culture that challenge traditional perceptions and suggest complex interpretations of the past. This volume provides a synthetic overview of recent developments in the study of Neolithic Greece and reconsiders the dynamics of human-environment interactions while recording the growing diversity in layers of social organization. It fills an essential lacuna in contemporary literature and enhances our understanding of the Neolithic communities in the Greek Peninsula.
Download or read book European Societies in the Bronze Age written by A. F. Harding and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-18 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bronze Age, roughly 2500 to 750 BC, was the last fully prehistoric period in Europe and a crucial element in the formation of the Europe that emerged into history in the later first millennium BC. This book focuses on the material culture remains of the period, and through them provides an interpretation of the main trends in human development that occurred during this timespan. It pays particular attention to the discoveries and theoretical advances of the last twenty years that have necessitated a major revision of received opinions about many aspects of the Bronze Age. Arranged thematically, it reviews the evidence for a range of topics in cross-cultural fashion, defining which major characteristics of the period were universal and which culture and area-specific. The result is a comprehensive study that will be of value to specialists and students, while remaining accessible to the non-specialist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recognition of the outstanding contribution made by Peter Warren to Aegean archaeology - and in particular to Cretan studies - this volume presents a collection of 36 papers reflecting his wide-ranging research interests. Among the topics addressed are material culture and iconography, including frescoes, pottery, seals and stone vases; chronology, inter-site relationships, overseas connections and religion; Knossos and the legacy of Sir Arthur Evans; and the natural world, Minoan and modern. While some papers present unpublished material for the first time, others reflect on broader themes, offering important new insights into perennial problems of Minoan archaeology. Thus, as a whole, the volume serves as an important overview of current research into Bronze Age Crete and its wider relations, both spatially and temporally.
