Book The Great Village

Download or read book The Great Village written by Cyril S. Belshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic study of the urban Papuan and analyses, among other things, the family, household budgets, the proliferation of ceremonial and the re-birth of sorcery. The study can be compared, from the point of view of methods and research problems, with the increasing number of accounts of the urbanization of traditional societies, particularly in Africa. Hanuabada is not, however, 'de-tribalized' and it has maintained its boundaries intact against overwhelming immigration. First published in 1957.

Book The Old Village and the Great House

Download or read book The Old Village and the Great House written by Douglas V. Armstrong and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rediscovering the lives of enslaved people in Jamaica A combination of archaeological and historical study, The Old Village and the Great House examines life within enslaved, and later free, laborer households at a Jamaican sugar plantation. Douglas V. Armstrong draws on excavations in house-yard areas to create a case study comparison between the lives of enslaved workers and the planter class. As Armstrong shows, archaeological analysis and historical research reveal a firsthand record of people's lives and the emergence of an African-Jamaican community. Detailed descriptions of artifacts, structural remains, and dietary refuse combine with written accounts to provide insight into the lives of enslaved people and African-Jamaican transformations.

Book The Village Against the World

Download or read book The Village Against the World written by Dan Hancox and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred kilometers from Seville, there is a small village, Marinaleda, that for the last thirty years has been at the center of a long struggle to create a communist utopia. In a story reminiscent of the Asterix books, Dan Hancox explores the reality behind the community where no one has a mortgage, sport is played in the Che Guevara stadium and there are monthly "Red Sundays" where everyone works together to clean up the neighbourhood. In particular he tells the story of the village mayor, Sanchez Gordillo, who in 2012 became a household name in Spain after leading raids on local supermarkets to feed the Andalucian unemployed.

Book Mississippi Provincial Archives

Download or read book Mississippi Provincial Archives written by Patricia Kay Galloway and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1984-05-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of these final two volumes of the Mississippi Provincial Archives brings to a close the important scholarly project initiated by Dunbar Rowland and A. G. Sanders in the 1920s, suspended at the time of the Great Depression, and then revived in 1979 under the editorship of Patricia Kay Galloway. The Mississippi Provincial Archives assembles and translates the documents in French archives relating to military, diplomatic, colonial, and economic activities in the lower Mississippi Valley from the founding of the original settlement at Ocean Springs, or “Old Biloxy,” in 1699 through the abandonment of the French Louisiana colony in 1763 at the close of the French and Indian War with England. The two present volumes focus on the years 1744 through 1763, but also contain material supplemental to the earlier volumes concerning the Natchez War (1730), the first Chickasaw campaign (1736), the second Chickasaw campaign (1739–1740), and additional documents that chart the rise of the Choctaw chief Red Shoe. The twenty-year period chronicled in-depth in Volumes IV and V was a time of intense rivalry with the English for Choctaw trade and allegiance. The documents chronicle the events of King George’s War (1744–1748) and of the concurrent struggle for control within the Choctaw nation that began with the revolt of a large faction led by Red Shoe and expanded into a civil war after the chief’s death at the hands of pro-French Choctaws. The settlement of this conflict was soon followed by the outbreak of the French and Indian War (1756–1763), at the end of which the French were forced to give up their colony—but not before concluding diplomatic arrangements with the Indians that would plague the victorious English for years to come. Mississippi Provincial Archives provides an invaluable source for understanding the history of French and English relations with the Indian nations of the South. But these collections also document many other aspects of the social history of the French colony, including the activities of merchants and other entrepreneurs, the development of the lumber industry along the coast, military justice and the founding of military outposts in the interior, and the relationships between the military governors and their civilian counterparts. Extensively annotated, these two volumes complete—after a delay of more than fifty years—a work of great significance for the study of the French Louisiana colony.

Download or read book Anung s Journey written by Carl Nordgren and published by Light Messages Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ancient Ojibway legend predates contact with European settlers, but the drummer boy and the people he meets at the end of his journey couldn’t be more familiar to modern culture. When the orphaned Anung sets out on his vision quest, he sees clearly that his purpose in life is to find the greatest chief of all and tell him of the many acts of kindness the mothers and fathers of the village have given to Anung. When the people of his village learn of the vision, they are proud of him. For every man of the village loves Anung as his son. Every woman is his mother. They believe Gitche Manitou, the great creator, has chosen their son for a special journey. In his quest to find the greatest chief, Anung travels through the 13 tribes of the First Nations, across forests, plains, water, and desert. Along the way, he is accompanied by Turtle, the interpreter of all languages. He finds friends in the most unlikely of places––a squirrel’s nest, a mother bear’s den, and a city filled with people from every tribe. At each stop, Anung and his drum sing of his mothers and fathers and his quest to meet the greatest chief. What Anung finds at the end of his journey will both surprise and thrill readers of all ages. This ancient legend, told in the beautifully poetic style of Carl Nordgren, begs to be read aloud and savored.
