Book Consumption Studies and the History of the Ottoman Empire 1550 1922

Download or read book Consumption Studies and the History of the Ottoman Empire 1550 1922 written by Donald Quataert and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1999-12-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a host of important and exciting topics relating to consumption, this book describes and analyzes the rise of mass fashion dress, changing fashions in clothing, the transcultural significance of tulip consumption, the rise of print advertising, the use of food as a marker of elite status, and the emergence of photographs as a consumer commodity. The emphasis on consumption rather than production offers new perspectives on the Ottoman and Middle East past, and by extension that of East and Southeast Asia as well as Africa. Its findings also invite comparisons with those in U.S. and European consumption history. Also included are chapters that offer guidance in the use of archival sources for research in consumption history and a methodological overview of the utility of consumption studies for Ottoman and Middle East history. Contributors include Tulay Artan, Suraiya Faroqhi, Elizabeth B. Frierson, Charlotte Jirousek, Joyce Hedda Matthews, Nancy Micklewright, Donald Quataert, Ariel Salzmann, and Madeline C. Zilfi.

Book A History of Ottoman Economic Thought

Download or read book A History of Ottoman Economic Thought written by Fatih Ermiş and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ottoman Empire (1299-1923) existed at the crossroads of the East and the West. Neither the history of Western Asia, nor that of Eastern Europe, can be fully understood without knowledge of the history of the Ottoman Empire. The question is often raised of whether or not economic thinking can exist in a non-capitalistic society. In the Ottoman Empire, like in all other pre-capitalistic cultures, the economic sphere was an integral part of social life, and elements of Ottoman economic thought can frequently be found in amongst political, social and religious ideas. Ottoman economic thinking cannot, therefore, be analyzed in isolation; analysis of economic thinking can reveal aspects of the entire world view of the Ottomans. Based on extensive archival work, this landmark volume examines Ottoman economic thinking in the classical period using three concepts: humorism, circle of justice and household economy. Basing the research upon the writings of the Ottoman elite and bureaucrats, this book explores Ottoman economic thinking starting from its own dynamics, avoiding the temptation to seek modern economic theories and approaches in the Ottoman milieu.

Book The Nature of the Early Ottoman State

Download or read book The Nature of the Early Ottoman State written by Heath W. Lowry and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on surviving documents from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, The Nature of the Early Ottoman State provides a revisionist approach to the study of the formative years of the Ottoman Empire. Challenging the predominant view that a desire to spread Islam accounted for Ottoman success during the fourteenth-century advance into Southeastern Europe, Lowry argues that the primary motivation was a desire for booty and slaves. The early Ottomans were a plundering confederacy, open to anyone (Muslim or Christian) who could meaningfully contribute to this goal. It was this lack of a strict religious orthodoxy, and a willingness to preserve local customs and practices, that allowed the Ottomans to gain and maintain support. Later accounts were written to buttress what had become the self-image of the dynasty following its incorporation of the heartland of the Islamic world in the sixteenth century.
