Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Northwestern Sanitary Fair Then loaded wagons came in long processions, toiling into the city, from far-off country places, bearing marks of frontier service, and the horses or mules, together with the drivers themselves, most Ofthem told of wear. Many of them were sun burnt men, with hard hands and Iigid features; and a care less Observer would have said that there was surely nothing in those wagons, as they passed, to awaken any sentiment. Yet something there was about it all which brought tears to the eyes of hundreds as the old farmers, with their heavy loads, toiled by. Among the crowd of spectators there was noticed a broad-shouldered Dutchman, with a face expressive of anything but thought or feeling; he gazed at this singular procession as it passed, - the sun-burnt farmers, and the long, narrow wagons, and the endless variety of vegetables and farm produce, - he gazed there as these men with their sober faces and homely gifts passed one by one, until when, finally, the last wagon had moved by, this stolid, lethargic-looking man broke down. Book Report of Northwestern Sanitary Commission Branch of the U S Sanitary Commission

Download or read book Report of Northwestern Sanitary Commission Branch of the U S Sanitary Commission written by Northwestern Sanitary Commission and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Northwestern Sanitary Commission, Branch of the U. S. Sanitary Commission: For the Months of November and December, 1864 This summary has been extracted from the report, no mention being made of there being any more of the report than the' part thus extracted, and then, as before stated, based upon these figures, which, so far as given, are his own, the deduction is made that it has cost all the money expended in his department to distribute worth of supplies to the army. Any person, having the report itself before him, will see at once how incorrect such deduction is. But as the summary, without the balance of the report, may, indeed in some cases has, misled, this branch of the Commission will, as succinctly as it can, explain it somewhat in detail, finding in it a triumphant vindication of the Commission's work. With great care the Secretary has divided it into different accounts, that the reader might see at a glance what each branch of the work of the Commission has cost for the period of time covered by the report, to wit: from September 1, 1861, to July 1, 1864. It is necessary to be borne in mind all the time, that the mere distribution of supplies, is not the whole work of the Commission, but that its power for good has been exerted in manifold directions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Branch and Its Tributaries: Being a History of the Work of the Northwestern Sanitary Commission and Its Auxiliaries, During the War of the Rebellion The appalling scenes of the Rebellion, go terribly present and real bot the other day, are already becoming shadowed and irie-hued, as seen through the media of three years of hopes and anxieties, harrassments and encouragements, consequent upon the reconstruction of all private as well as all public interests. Already, too, the languor and weariness consequent upon high and protracted excitement, is passing away, and the apathy-almost antipathy - with which for a time the fatigued public looked upon every attempted recital of the calamitous incidents hardly yet escaped from, is yielding, to an awakening interest born of the refreshment arising from repose. The actors in the actual conflict, recovered from exhaustion, are beginning to winnow, from the limitless abundance of the war literature, such portions as relate to the scenes in which they bore part, and to read them with a critical and careful Interest. Those, too, who, though removed from personal danger, in remote and desolate homes, agonized over the peril of fathers, husbands, brothers, sods, gone to the field, and in numberless instances out of deep poverty, hot with exulting self-sacrifice, contributed and sent to the far-away camp all those necessaries as well as delicacies so precious and priceless to the soldier in service, are also beginning to feel that a full and Just account of the outside effort made by the people at large, in the dreary conflict, should, in justice to the cause of truth and for the interests of history, be placed permanently on record. History accords her high places to the battle field. Hardly secondary, however, is the position which righteously belongs to the record of the Individual preparation, effort and sacrifice which, though remote from the field of action, anticipates and assures victory in the conflict. Book A Record of the Metropolitan Fair

Download or read book A Record of the Metropolitan Fair written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Record of the Metropolitan Fair: In Aid of the United States Sanitary Commission, Held at New York, in April, 1864 IN the Autumn of 1863 it came to be felt that no more effectual way of raising money for the needs of the Sanitary Commission could be devised than by holding Fairs. Chicago by this means was enabled to give sixty thousand dollars at once to the bene cent fund which previously had been supplied by small con tributions. Not that the aggregate of contributions was small; the streams of benevolence that owed into the common reservoir of the Sanitary Commission were countless and never dry, but they were mere rills when compared with this Chicago ood of bounty. So it was not long before Boston, a city which readily catches a new idea, followed with another bazaar, and from it realized one hundred and forty thousand dollars. The success of the new idea, one grand gift in place of numberless small ones, was now, of course, fully estab lished. The name Sanitary Fair was coined, and applied to each of that splendid series of bazaars, whose number and magnificence made a memorable feature of the winter of 1863 - 4 in the loyal North. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of the Great Central Fair for the U. S. Sanitary Commission: Held at Philadelphia, June 1864 The Executive Committee of the Great Central Fair, deeply impressed with the wonderful success of the undertaking, naturally wished that some account of its origin and progress should be prepared. This seemed desirable, not merely as a recognition of the faithful services of those to whom its success was due, but also as an example to those who should come after us. I was designated by the Committee to undertake the work. I entered upon it with unfeigned diffidence, for I could not but feel that my power of giving any adequate representation of the grandeur of the Exhibition, or of doing full justice to the steady, unwearied, and self-denying spirit which animated all those engaged in it, was very feeble indeed. I have not, therefore, in the following pages aspired to the dignity of a Historian, but have confined myself to the more humble position of an Editor, seeking to arrange in some orderly manner the vast and varied material for an account of the Fair, with which the kindness of my friends, members of the various Committees, and the reports of the newspaper press have supplied me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Sanitary Commission: Reprinted From the North American Review, No. CCIII., For April, 1864 The last Official returns of sickness and mortality among the British forces present the best argument upon this subject. In Jamaica, the death rate from disease has fallen, since the recent reform was carried into effect, from 260 per to 20; in Trinidad, from 106 to 0 (in 1860) in Barbadoes, from 58 to 6 in St. Lucia, from 122 to 1 in British Guiana, from 74 to 6; in Canada, from 16 to 10; in Nova Scotia, from 15 to 7; in Newfoundland, from 11 to 4; in Bermuda, from 28 to 8; in Gibraltar, from 11 to 7; in Malta, from 15 to 10; in Ionia, from 15 to 7. In our vast armies of volunteers, the problems of sanitary science were to be wrought out as a national and patriotic work. The death rates of the Mexican campaign would im peril the national cause, and bring sorrow to every home in the land. Can the average sickness rate be kept at a minimum point? Can the average death rate from disease be reduced to a fraction of that which was registered in the Mexican war? This result the Commission believed possible. It was to be accomplished by prevention and by succor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
