Book Francesco Azopardi 1748 1809

Download or read book Francesco Azopardi 1748 1809 written by Dion Buhagiar and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, more interest and demand has been generated in performing the music of Francesco Azopardi, particularly by Maltese musicians, European choirs and orchestras. The strength of Azopardi's music lies in the fact that it was always written with a specific purpose or commemoration in mind - such as the famous Requiem Mass in F minor (1792) which was commissioned for the death of King Leopold II of Austria. The book demonstrates Azopardi as a prolific composer who was in touch with the mainstream ideas of the most important European musical centres such as Naples, Paris and Monaco di Baviera (Munich), among other places. Azopardi composed several larger works such as the Oratorio La Passione di Cristo, three Grande Messe for two choirs, soloists and two orchestras, with arias and choruses reflecting the Neapolitan operatic style of Nicola Piccinni and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, as well as a large number of psalms, te deums, solemn hymns and sequences. There have also been attempts at editing and publishing, performing and recording of his instrumental music, especially the sinfonias (short sonata-da-chiesa form). Azopardi's musical dedication, however, was directed towards the composition of music for the cathedral, in concordance with his role as Maestro di Cappella, as well as teaching composition through his own treatises: Il Musico Prattico (I) and Il Musico Pratico (II). These two treatises are analysed here with the last expanded version of Il Musico Pratico in four books. These two important treatises are here presented for the first time in their proper historical perspective which includes also a comparative study and analysis of the two. ___ Dion Buhagiar is an Associate Professor of Music and was Head of the Music Studies Programme at the Mediterranean Institute of the University of Malta (retired 2015). He is also Maestro di Cappella and Organist Emeritus of St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta and St Paul's Cathedral, Mdina, Malta. He is the founder and conductor of the Collegium Musicum Choir. Buhagiar conducted the Collegium Musicum choir and orchestra at both cathedrals, in large works including Francesco Azopardi's Messa Di Gloria for eight voices and eight soloists, Mozart's Requiem & Coronation Mass, Haydn's Paukenmesse & Creation, Verdi's Requiem and Rossini's Stabat Mater for exclusive German audiences. His compositional output includes four large-scale Oratorios and an Opera in Maltese (Libretto from Francis Ebejer's Il-Ħarsa ta' Rużann). Other compositions include a vast amount of sacred works for the cathedral liturgy throughout 38 years of services such as masses including the Missa Solemnis Gloriae, Antiphons, Psalms and Te Deums.

Book Studies in Maltese Popular Music

Download or read book Studies in Maltese Popular Music written by Philip Ciantar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the diverse facets of popular music in Malta, paying special attention to għana (Malta’s folk song), the wind band tradition, and modern popular music. Ciantar provides intriguing discussions and examples of how popular music on this small Mediterranean island country interacts with other aspects of the island’s life and culture such as language, religion, history, customs, and politics. Through a series of ethnographic vignettes, the book explores the music as it takes place in bars, at festivals, and during village celebrations, and considers how it is talked about in the local press, at group gatherings, and on social media. The ethnography adopted here is that of a native musician and ethnomusicologist and therefore marries the author’s memories with ongoing observations and their evaluation.

Book excerpt: Wind bands are common around the world, and the small Mediterranean island of Malta is no exception. Their abundance in Malta testifies to the popularity of the wind band tradition among the locals. It is central to everyday life, particularly during the village feast, which is synonymous with Maltese bands. These ensembles are not made up merely of performers and musical instruments but encapsulate a rich and intricate tradition embedded in the local community. This book describes the history and development of Maltese wind bands, social and political values, the Maltese march, entertainment, and the recording industry. Chapters demonstrate how local communality, partisan political division and rivalry, foreign influences, continuation of past practices as well as the introduction of new ones, and other interests have coalesced to shape the contemporary Maltese wind band tradition.

Book Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period written by Bertil H. Van Boer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak of "classical music" it often refers rather loosely to serious "art" music but at the core is really the music of the classical period running from about 1730 to 1800, give or take. This was truly one of the most glorious periods for both composition and performance and it is this classical music which is still at the core of today's repertoire. Obvious names connected with this period are Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, but there were many more still reasonably well known like Gluck and C.P.E Bach, and dozens more who are regrettably little known today. This Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period includes not only these composers, but also eminent conductors and performers, patrons, and publishers. There are also dictionary entries on major centers of music-making, typical instruments, important technical terms, and emerging musical forms, including the symphony and opera. Indeed, with a 1,000 cross-referenced entries, there is information on most matters of interest. This is prefaced by an extensive chronology, tracing the course of this period from year to year, and an introduction taking a careful look at the period as a whole. Finally, there is a substantial bibliography. Surely, this is a book which will appeal not only to students and researchers but all music-lovers.

Book Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers

Download or read book Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers written by Hannu Annala and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this landmark sourcebook, Finnish guitarists Hannu Annala and Heiki Matlik consulted more than 70 music texts as well as dozens of composer resumes acquired from the musical information centers of several countries. During the writing process, which lasted for more than three years, they received additional information from many modern composers, including Leo Brouwer and Reginald Smith Brindle among others. In addition, several internationally renowned performing guitarists provided valuable information; these include Magnus Andersson (Sweden), Remi Boucher (Canada), Margarita Escarpa (Spain), Aleksander Frauchi (Russia) and David Tanenbaum (USA) among others. The authors' aim was to write a well-structured book with separate chapters for each instrument, such as the Renaissance and Baroque guitar, the Renaissance and Baroque lute, the vihuela, etc. This unique structure enables the reader to easily discover which composers wrote for a certain instrument during any given period. In addition to the composers one would expect to find in such a comprehensive listing, the book documents several historical and modern composers for whom little previous information has been available. the book's list of more than 400 guitar and lute concertos dating from the Baroque era to the present day is a totally unprecedented.Short introductions regarding guitar and lute-like instruments as well as their basic histories are provided at the beginning of the book. the authors hope that the Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers will serve as a practical guide for both amateurs and professionals, encouraging further study of the history of these instruments and expanding the repertoire heard on today's concert stage.
