Download or read book The Grapes of New York Classic Reprint written by Ulysses Prentiss Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grapes of New York Flora, in the Evolution of our Native Fruits. And in the Cyclopedia of American Horticulture, was adopted. The Grapes of New York makes its chief contribution to the pomology Of the country in the description of varieties. The authors have tried to study varieties from every point of view, not alone nor chiefly, it must be said, with regard to their cultural value; for most of the varieties pass out Of cultivation and such information would be worthless within a few years at most. But, rather, the effort has been to determine what elementary or unit characters the grape possesses as shown in its botanical and horti cultural groups. The Twentieth Century begins with the unanimous judg ment Of scientists that the characters of plants are independent entities which are thrown into various relationships with each other in individuals and groups of individuals. This conception of unit characters lies at the foundation Of plant improvement. We are but beginning the breeding of American grapes and it has seemed to the writer that the most important part of this undertaking is to discover and record as far as possible these unit characters of grapes, thereby aiding to furnish a foundation for grape breeding. The great problem Of plant-breeding in the future will be to correlate the characters known to exist in the plant being improved; we must know what these are before we begin to combine and rearrange them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grapes of Wrath The readers of Boyd Cable's "Between the Lines," "Action Front," and "Doing Their Bit," have very naturally had their curiosity excited as to an author who, previously unheard of, has suddenly become the foremost word-painter of active fighting at the present day, and the greatest "literary discovery" of the War. Boyd Cable is primarily a man of action; and for half of his not very long life he has been doing things instead of writing them. At the age of twenty he joined a corps of Scouts in the Boer War, and saw plenty of fighting in South Africa. After the close of that war, his life consisted largely of traveling in Great Britain and the principal countries of Europe and the Mediterranean, his choice always leading him from the beaten track. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME? Heralded as “impossible to put down” (Elle), and named a Best Book of the Summer by Glamour, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Marie Claire, and Us Weekly, Eight Hundred Grapes is a heartbreaking, funny, and deeply evocative novel about love, marriage, family, wine, and the treacherous terrain in which they all intersect. There are secrets you share, and secrets you hide… What if your beloved fiancé, he of the crinkly smile and irresistible British accent, had kept a life-changing secret from you? And what if, just a week before your dream wedding, you discovered it? Georgia Ford, bride-to-be, hops in her car and drives through the night, from Los Angeles to Sonoma, to her safe haven: her family, and the acclaimed family winery. Georgia craves the company of those who know her best, and whom she truly knows. Better yet, it’s the eve of the last harvest—the best time of the growing season, and Georgia knows she’ll find solace—and distraction—in the familiar rituals. But when Georgia arrives home, nothing is at all familiar. Her parents, her brothers, the family business, are all unrecognizable. It seems her fiancé isn’t the only one who’s been keeping secrets… Eight Hundred Grapes is a story about the messy realities of family, the strength (and weaknesses) of romantic love, and the importance of finding a place to call home. “This winning tale will both satisfy on a literary level and encourage oenophiles to pour themselves a glass of a recent vintage to enjoy while reading; it’s a tasty treat for wine lovers and teetotalers alike” (Publishers Weekly). You won’t be able to put this “addictive” (Us Weekly) novel down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New-York Cries in Rhyme New-york is built on the south end of the Island of Manhattan, now called new-york Island. The noble River Hudson, or North River, flows along its north west side, while the East River, which unites with the majestic Long Island Sound, waters the south-east border. It is thought that no place in the world, embraces so many natural advantages for commerce and trade, as the port of new-york. None, perhaps, is in a more flourishing condition, than it is at this time. A great many buildings have been recently erected, and we may behold whole squares and magnificent structures going up in various parts of the city. Vessels from almost every commercial country, may be seen in its port; and the steamboats, m the summer are numerous, and ply in every direction. By great labor and expense, the numerous hills in that part of the Island on which the city is building, have been leveled, and valleys and swamps have been filled up. Only a few years ago, there was a lake of fresh water, called the Collect, in the middle of the city, which is now firm land; and spacious streets and stately buildings, now occupy a place where the boys of new-york formerly spent many hours in skating! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of Mulberry Street: Stories of Tenement Life in New York City Since I wrote How the Other Half Lives I have been asked many times upon what basis of experience, of fact, I built that ac count of life in New York tenements. These stories contain the answer. They are from the daily grist of the police hopper in Mul berry street, at which I have been grinding for twenty years. They are reprinted from the columns of my newspaper, and from the magazines as a contribution to the discussion of the lives and homes of the poor, which in recent years has done much to better their lot, and is yet to do much more when we have all come to understand each (fiher. In this discussion only facts are of value, and these stories are true. In the few instances in which I have taken the ordering of events into my own hands, it is chiefly their se quence with which I have interfered. The facts themselves remain as I found them. J. A. R.
