Book The Grammar of School Discipline

Download or read book The Grammar of School Discipline written by Hannah Carson Baggett and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grammar of School Discipline examines how seemingly discrete school discipline policies and practices constitute a particular grammar: Removal, Resistance and Reform. Weaving numeric data with portraits of students and school practitioners, the authors detail a nuanced landscape of school discipline in Alabama and its anti-Black foundations. The removal of Black students can be traced to the antebellum construction of Blackness as criminal, deviant, and deserving of punishment. A focus on resistance centers the agency that students and practitioners exercise despite anti-Black removal. An exploration of specific reform efforts emphasizes that even the most well-intentioned and well-organized reforms are limited when the removal of students remains an option for practitioners. The authors end with an appeal to educational stakeholders to repair the harms that these anti-Black policies and practices inflict on students and communities, and thus move towards repairing the damage that white supremacy inflicts on everyone’s humanity.

Book School Songs and Gymslips

Download or read book School Songs and Gymslips written by Marilyn Yurdan and published by History Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was life really like in a grammar school in the 1950s and '60s? For those educated at a grammar school during their heyday, this time holds very special memories. They were more than just the years of being taught Latin and domestic science, custard and semolina school dinners, and learning about the birds and the bees; they were the formative years of a generation, when those from all walks of life were given a uniform, a code of behaviour and, most importantly, pride in the institution to which they belonged. This generation of Baby Boomers holds a unique place in British history: growing up during the years when the country was emerging from the shadow cast by the Second World War, they were the first youngsters to benefit from the 'mod cons' and innovations which were gradually being introduced. With fascinating memories and details that will resonate with thousands of grammar school pupils across the country, School Songs and Gymslips is a heart-warming collection of the experiences of the author and her contemporaries during a golden era.MARILYN YURDAN attended Holton Park Girls' Grammar School in Oxfordshire during the 1950s and '60s. She has been awarded a Master of Studies in English Local History from the University of Oxford, and has written numerous books, including Oxford in the 1950s & '60s. She lives in Abingdon.

Book excerpt: To many in the United Kingdom, the British public school remains the disliked and mistrusted embodiment of privilege and elitism. They have educated many of the country’s top bankers and politicians over the centuries right up to the present, including the present Prime Minister. David Turner’s vibrant history of Great Britain’s public schools, from the foundation of Winchester College in 1382 to the modern day, offers a fresh reappraisal of the controversial educational system. Turner argues that public schools are, in fact, good for the nation and are presently enjoying their true “Golden Age,” countering the long-held belief that these institutions achieved their greatest glory during Great Britain’s Victorian Era. Turner’s engrossing and enlightening work is rife with colorful stories of schoolboy revolts, eccentric heads, shocking corruption, and financial collapse. His thoughtful appreciation of these learning establishments follows the progression of public schools from their sometimes brutal and inglorious pasts through their present incarnations as vital contributors to the economic, scientific, and political future of the country.

Book My 50Th Class Reunion from Grammar School

Download or read book My 50Th Class Reunion from Grammar School written by Jack Archer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am an original baby boomer, born in 1946, who attended a very strict Catholic Grammar School for nine years. Parents back in the early 50s, not knowing or wanting to raise their own children, made a decision to punish them into submission. Understanding came from a B.V.M. nun with a stern hand wielding a yardstick. How did we survive and how did some of us turn out? From Kindergarten, when only six year old, to thirteen, we made it through the tension and anxiety of attending St. Tarcissus Grammar School. The experience was intended to teach us the correct way to conduct ourselves. Do you think it made a lasting impression in the years ahead? Education has come a long way. Did those good Sisters know what they were doing? Did our parents play a bigger role in our up-bringing? Some of my conclusions actually make sense. The hard truth is history. Our working careers are over. From the craziness of those grammar school years comes our final report card. All of us from that graduating class of 1960 are now senior citizens. Lets find out just what happened. Planning this reunion took six months and made me think about my whole life. It made me realize that life is a struggle, but happiness can be achieved, if you work at it. My other committee member, who was supposed to help me, gave me a migraine. Would this reunion be a success or a bust? It was all on my shoulders. To be sure, it is funny, thought provoking, and I assure you, 100% true.

Book The Old Grammar Schools

Download or read book The Old Grammar Schools written by Foster Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968. At the time when the English Grammar Schools were most flourishing, namely the 17th century, they subserved a practical national aim. Puritan England, by no means concerned with the teaching of the Classics per se, looked to the Grammar Schools for that subsidiary help which the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew afforded to the intensive study of the Scriptures and pietas literata. The question this study looks at is related to the loss of these classic subjects in Secondary schools and therefore to measure in the long-run, the value of our new ‘Secondary’ Schools relatively to the old Grammar Schools—rather than the comprehensiveness of the list of subjects included in the new curricula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar School Geography: Compiled by the State Textbook Committee and Approved by the State Board of Education The present is a period of marked increase in the attention and thought given to geography. This is shown in various ways. The demand for greater markets for manufactured goods and for cheaper raw materials has caused European nations to push actively the colonization of Africa. For the same reasons the leading nations of the world are contending for commercial supremacy on the Asiatic shores of the Pacific, and our own country is exploring and developing its new possessions. Renewed interest in all fields of geographical inquiry is indicated by the establishment of departments of geography in our great univer sities and by the increasing number of publications on related topics.
