It has a distinct government of its own established by the people of the State. The first thirteen States of the United States had their origin in the thirteen colonies established by England in this country. Most of the other States had been organized as Territories before their admission into the union. In the United States a State is more distinctly a political organization and at the same time more definitely a member of the union and a part of the national govern ment than in any other nation of the world. Book To Organize the Sovereign People

Download or read book To Organize the Sovereign People written by David W. Houpt and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the struggle to define self-government in the critical years following the Declaration of Independence, when Americans throughout the country looked to the Keystone State of Pennsylvania for guidance on political mobilization and the best ways to create a stable arrangement that could balance liberty with order. In 1776 radicals mobilized the people to overthrow the Colonial Assembly and adopt a new constitution, one that asserted average citizens’ rights to exercise their sovereignty directly not only through elections but also through town meeting, petitions, speeches, parades, and even political violence. Although highly democratic, this system proved unwieldy and chaotic. David Houpt finds that over the course of the 1780s, a relatively small group of middling and elite Pennsylvanians learned to harness these various forms of "popular" mobilization to establish themselves as the legitimate spokesmen of the entire citizenry. In examining this process, he provides a granular account of how the meaning of democracy changed, solidifying around party politics and elections, and how a small group of white men succeeded in setting the framework for what self-government means in the United States to this day.

Book The American Citizen in Pennsylvania

Download or read book The American Citizen in Pennsylvania written by Albert E. Maltby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Citizen in Pennsylvania: The Government of the State and of the Nation The purpose of this work is to present to the pupils in the public schools in the Commonwealth some practical infor mation as to the rights and duties which belong to American citizenship. The study of civics is {now receiving increased attention in our schools, particularly since the school laws require that teachers shall have a fair knowledge of civil government, including State and local government. In view of this legislation, a text - book to meet the needs of the schools should treat the local and State government as at least of equal importance with that of the Nation. It has been said that many a youth has grown to manhood with so little ap preciation of the Commonwealth in which he lives as to re gard it simply as a geographical division. The study of the State government and of the National Government are of equal importance. The student of civil government should begin with that which is near at hand and of immediate interest, and proceed to that which is distant and of remote concern. He should not begin with that rare and precious afterthought and flower of government, the Constitution of the United States, but with the material forms that are close at hand. In connection with the ordinary lessons in reading, the children should be made acquainted with words suggesting civic ideas, as cit izen, soldier, officer, law, justice, country, state, city, and nation. Then, in elementary lessons, the children should gain general notions of local government and organization.
