Book excerpt: The reimagining of Jane Eyre as a gutsy, heroic serial killer that The New York Times Book Review calls “wonderfully entertaining” and USA Today describes as “sheer mayhem meets Victorian propriety”—nominated for the 2017 Edgar Award for Best Novel. “Reader, I murdered him.” A sensitive orphan, Jane Steele suffers first at the hands of her spiteful aunt and predatory cousin, then at a grim school where she fights for her very life until escaping to London, leaving the corpses of her tormentors behind her. After years of hiding from the law while penning macabre “last confessions” of the recently hanged, Jane thrills at discovering an advertisement. Her aunt has died and her childhood home has a new master: Mr. Charles Thornfield, who seeks a governess. Burning to know whether she is in fact the rightful heir, Jane takes the position incognito and learns that Highgate House is full of marvelously strange new residents—the fascinating but caustic Mr. Thornfield, an army doctor returned from the Sikh Wars, and the gracious Sikh butler Mr. Sardar Singh, whose history with Mr. Thornfield appears far deeper and darker than they pretend. As Jane catches ominous glimpses of the pair’s violent history and falls in love with the gruffly tragic Mr. Thornfield, she faces a terrible dilemma: Can she possess him—body, soul, and secrets—without revealing her own murderous past? “A thrill ride of a novel. A must read for lovers of Jane Eyre, dark humor, and mystery.”—PopSugar.com

Book excerpt: Jane Eyre, the story of a young girl and her passage into adulthood, was an immediate commercial success at the time of its original publication in 1847. Its representation of the underside of domestic life and the hypocrisy behind religious enthusiasm drew both praise and bitter criticism, while Charlotte Brontë’s striking exposé of poor living conditions for children in charity schools as well as her poignant portrayal of the limitations faced by women who worked as governesses sparked great controversy and social debate. Jane Eyre, Brontë’s best-known novel, remains an extraordinary coming-of-age narrative and one of the great classics of literature. The second edition has been updated throughout to reflect recent scholarship and includes new appendices on violence against women in Victorian fiction and madness and disability in the Victorian era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Face in a Million is an entirely fictional story evolved over many years. The author began thinking about writing a story after he visited southern Africa in 1967, where his wife had been born and raised and was often called Mu Shangaaniana when she was young. He began to formulate a story about a young gal who had been raised on a mission station in Mozambique. She was anxious to leave Africa for America to have a more interesting life. A plot formed in his my mind, and he envisioned a striking gal having a life that was quite amazing. She would travel and fall in love, meet notable people, and experience a lot of success. Would that prove to be satisfying for her? During the years that followed, William was privileged to travel to many places throughout the world, so his story evolved in a way that readers could share in some of his traveling experiences. His protagonist had to decide what was really important in her life. Her story takes place across the span of a few decades; therefore, the story eventually developed into a series of five books, which should be considered as one. Because the title is One Face in a Million, William knew her appearance would be of real interest. He looked at images of several notable actresses of the past, but the one that he preferred was of Merle Oberon. Perhaps it would be just as well for any reader to formulate their own ideas of what his characters would look like. Although this is a fictitious story, he hopes that it entertains those who choose to read it.

Book The Heroines of Charlotte Bront

Download or read book The Heroines of Charlotte Bront written by Dr. Priti Kanodia and published by Ashok Yakkaldevi. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Charlotte began writing, the heroes and heroines of the novels prepared for young ladies and gentlemen were ideally perfect. The approach of the heroine was announced by the rustling of voluminous muslin, whose quality was described as the whitest and finest. When she came tripping in sandals, long ringlets were seen falling over a drooping head and a swan neck, and she was declared tender, soft, languishing, and innocent. The hero was the pink of kindness and graciousness; and when, after three volumes of courtship, he won a reluctant bride, he was told to be never cross or wayward with her. The best novels of this species - a lingering on of the Sir Charles Grandison tradition - were those written by Mrs. Anne Marsh Caldwell. Even Emily and Anne Brontë were careful to keep their heroines beautiful, in Wildfell Hall and Wuthering Heights though to no such extreme. Charlotte told Emily and Anne that they were ‘morally wrong’ in adopting the conventional heroine, and said to them, ‘I will show you a heroine as plain and as small as myself, who shall be as interesting as any of yours.’[1] [1] Charlotte Brontë’s letter quoted in W. L. Cross, The Development of the English Novel, (London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd: 1899 rpt. 1964), p. 228.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic novel steeped in action, intrigue, and romance. July 1187: the forces of the Muslim sultan known as Saladin have defeated the army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, allowing Saladin to achieve his lifelong ambition of recapturing the Holy City for Islam. This sets the stage for the Third Crusade: the confrontation between Saladin and the legendary Christian warrior, Richard the Lionheart. Both men believe they are destined by God to lead their holy armies to complete victory. Richard, a legendary warrior with a keen military mind, finds his vow to retake Jerusalem complicated by infighting over succession to the British throne, a rivalry with the French king, and a choice between two potential queens. Meanwhile, Saladin struggles to keep his fractious forces together while remaining true to the noblest principles of Islam. These events are also portrayed through the eyes of two common men: Pierre of Botron is a Christian knight who is captured on the battlefield and subjected to the indignity of slavery. Rashid of Yenbo is a Muslim trader who finds prosperity in Saladin's triumphs. The relationship between Rashid and Pierre offers the possibility that people of good will can overcome polarizing conflicts. As events build toward the Battle of Jaffa, one of the most well-known conflicts of the Crusades, the fates of the characters depend on the choices they make between the compassionate and fanatical aspects of their faiths. The Swords of Faith offers an eye-opening comparison and contrast of the tenets of Christianity and Islam, insights that reverberate into the present day.
