Book Understanding Korean Christianity

Download or read book Understanding Korean Christianity written by K. Kale Yu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural landscape plays a momentous role in the transmission of Christianity. Consequently, the global expansion of the church has led to the increasing diversification of world Christianity. As a result, scholars are turning more and more to native cultures as the point of focus. This study examines how this new discourse evolved as well as presenting a missional methodology based on the study of the native landscapes of Korea. Kale Yu argues that the process of formulating and communicating Christianity was less consistent than is usually supposed. By immersing the reader in the thought and lived experience of various Korean contexts, Professor Yu recreates the diversity of cultural landscapes experienced by Korean Christians of different periods in history. The result is a new interpretation of cross-cultural missional interactions.

This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in All Lands, 1898 The Bible was my companion, and, as never before, its truths seemed new and di vinely illuminated. My stateroom was my sanctuary where I communed with God and found relief from the perplexities and trials that assailed me. The occurrence of mv weekly fast and my times of secret prayer brought to me joys unknown before. From the first it had been matter of serious concern with me that before entering on my work in China everything in me not in har mony with the divine will and purpose might be removed, that my heart might be filled with love to God, that he would give me the perfect equipment for my mission which only the Holy Spirit can impart, and that he would prepare the way before me. These supplications were not in vain. 'i received the assurance that God did take full possession of my heart, that he did ap prove me as one of his missionaries to the Chinese, and that his presence would go with me, preparing the way before me. This blessed assurance was given me Octo ber 24, 1847, while wrestling with God in my stateroom. A light such as I had never seen shone into my soul, a joy never before experienced filled my heart, a peace that passeth all understanding took possession of me, and to this day I have never felt any serious doubts in regard to the subject. Blessed be his holy name! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in All Lands, 1893 Let us not be guilty of fearing for our Bible. It has survived the shocks of eighteen centuries, and now it sways more human hearts than ever. In our own time controversies have broken over it like fierce summer atoms, which only brighten and enrich the face of the landscape they threaten to ruin. For a little while the theory of evolution was confidently affirmed to have shaken a strong ground for our belief in the Bible; it was soon made clear that it had only strengthened it. For fifty years unsparing criticism played upon the historical Christ it only brought him nearer and made his glory more visible to men. Hostile investigation has contributed to our knowledge of the New Testament and has left its credit and authority unimpaired, and now the Old Testament is passing through the same fire. Book William Scott Ament and the Boxer Rebellion

Download or read book William Scott Ament and the Boxer Rebellion written by Larry Clinton Thompson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1900 in China a peasant movement known as the Boxers rose up and tried to destroy its Western oppressors. The culminating event of the Boxer Rebellion was the siege of the Western legations in Peking. In isolated Peking, a horde of brightly dressed, acrobatic, anti-Western and anti-Christian Boxers surrounded the fortified diplomatic legation compound, and rumors about the torture and murder of 900 Western diplomats, soldiers, and missionaries swirled throughout the foreign media. Scholars agree that animosity toward Christian missionaries was a major cause of the Boxer Rebellion, but most accounts neglect the missionaries and emphasize instead the diplomats and soldiers who weathered the siege and defeated the Chinese in battle. This book gives equivalent attention to the missionaries, their work, the impact they had on China, and the controversies arising in the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion. It focuses particularly on one of the most distinguished American missionaries, William Scott Ament, whose brave and resourceful heroism was tarnished by hubris and looting.
