Book excerpt: “Papa Goose is destined to become a classic. This book has everything in it I love: great animals beautifully portrayed as individuals; cool science; drama, discovery, and personal transformation.” —Sy Montgomery, author of Birdology and The Soul of An Octopus The charming true story of one man’s journey to raise seven goslings in the name of science. In Papa Goose, Michael Quetting shares the hilarious and moving true story of how he became a father to seven rambunctious goslings—and the surprising things he learned along the way. Starting right at the beginning, with the eggs, his journey takes him from the incubator all the way to the airstrip, where he must attempt to teach the geese to fly as part of an ambitious scientific research initiative for the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, which tracks animal migrations around the world. For the next eleven months, we follow the newly minted dad as he takes the goslings on daily swims in the lake, tracks them down when they go astray, and watches their personalities develop: feisty, churlish, and lovable. Packed with charm and humor, Papa Goose quickly draws us into the adventure as Gloria, Nemo, and the rest of the crew conquer land, water, and air.

Download or read book Goslings written by J. D. Beresford and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goslings is a thrilling post-apocalyptic adventure. The story starts when a plague kills most of England's male population. It revolves around the Gosling family, free to fulfill its long-frustrated desires after the epidemic. Mr. Gosling leaves his home to pursue his sexual desires, and the Gosling daughters, with a lack of experience and self-independence, find shelter in a female-dominated agricultural community. However, their new life is endangered because of the community elders' opinions on free love. The author used excellently realistic details in an ironic description of a wrecked world through the lens of a lower-middle-class London family. It is a remarkable comedy of manners and a brilliant commentary on life that talks about sexual and social equality. It is a must-read for science fiction fans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right from the start of this century, field observations and the patient ringing of birds have made available a growing mass of data on the breeding and resting areas of migratory species and on the course, period and duration of their seasonal flights. Considered as a whole, this work on migration morphology commands admiration, and when view ed in detail it reveals fascinating insights into the extraordinary naviga tional performances of many bird species, which find their way over enormous distances. Yet only a few dozen physiologists are actively trying to answer the question of how these performances are achieved. Experimental work on migratory birds raises many difficulties, some of them insuperable, so that many researchers carry out their experiments on the homing pigeon, which is constantly motivated by homesickness and ready to display its ability to flyaway home. Many of the problems connected with bird navigation are still un solved, but a rapidly growing body of results is being produced along with a variety of new ideas and approaches. A clear majority of the stu dents of bird navigation met in September 1981 in Tirrenia, a seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian coast, where each of them offered new in sights into his or her recent investigations. Their contributions have been connected in this volume, which provides an up-to-date conspec tus of the stage reached by research in this field.
