Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to St Cloud’s, an exclusive public school where the boys prefer rouge to rugger and bondage to bunsen burners. Here, courtesy of new boy Basil Leaf and the postcards he writes to his long-suffering father, you’ll meet the ‘criminally pretty’ Gemini Tarqquogan, who paints his nails scarlet and wears frocks and feathers; Courtney Durham, who runs up curtains on his sewing machine; Hugo Bletchworth, keen on leatherwear and flagellation; Father Absolute, Basil’s gin-swilling Father Confessor; Rory O’Brien, St Cloud’s rugger coach and Courtney Durham’s ‘close companion’. Then there are Basil’s camp followers, so to speak: Nipper Thompson, a spirited jockey sacked by his guv’nor for wearing earrings at the morning gallop; Maurice Le Vere, a former ballet dancer and owner of The Last Faerie, a notorious watering hole; Sir Geoffrey Grassington, a local magistrate and the proprietor of a palace of pleasure, wherein Basil and his chums bring comfort to wealthy gentlemen of unusual tastes, until the men from MI5 move in... Dear Popsy is an outrageous, madly comic book, brimming with zip and exuberance. Michael Palin, of Monty Python fame, said: ‘Very, very funny, wonderful turns of phrase, carries on where Decline and Fall left off, I think I am jealous.’* And Goodreads’ reviewers have given it five-star ratings. Dear Popsy was first published by Andrew Deutsch and later by Penguin. This is the third edition of this popular book

  • Author : Constance Lewallen
  • Publisher : University of California Press

  • ISBN : 0520240294
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Ant Farm 1968 1978 written by Constance Lewallen and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book, created to accompany the traveling exhibition of the same name, provides a fascinating critical overview of Ant Farm, the radical architecture collective that brought us Cadillac Ranch, Media Burn, and The Eternal Frame. Established by several young renegade architects in 1968, Ant Farm was a collaborative art and design group eager to bring to its practice a revolutionary spirit more consistent with the times. Its vision encompassed creations for a nomadic lifestyle, including inflatable structures and radical environments that culminated in projects such as the organically appointed House of the Century and the unrealized aquatic edifice The Dolphin Embassy. Ant Farm 1968-1978 explores the sweeping career of this inspired and inspiring visionary collective as its architectural projects broadened to embrace a range of undertakings that challenged the visual architecture of image, icon, and power. Constance Lewallen provides an in-depth, anecdotally rich interview with founding members Chip Lord, Doug Michels, and Curtis Schreier. An essay by Michael Sorkin gives the multivalent cultural context for Ant Farm's radical architecture. Steve Seid takes a comprehensive look at Ant Farm's influential videotapes. Caroline Maniaque's "Searching for Energy" details the group's inflatable structures in relationship to contemporaneous architects working in a similar vein. The catalog also includes a substantial excerpt from Chip Lord's 1976 meditation on car culture, with a new epilogue; a graphically playful timeline recounting Ant Farm's essential art projects; and a rich montage of images and ephemera capturing the humor, originality, and prescience of this feisty enterprise. A joint publication with the Berkeley Art Museum

Download or read book Steiner Minimal Trees written by Dietmar Cieslik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of "Shortest Connectivity", which is discussed here, has a long and convoluted history. Many scientists from many fields as well as laymen have stepped on its stage. Usually, the problem is known as Steiner's Problem and it can be described more precisely in the following way: Given a finite set of points in a metric space, search for a network that connects these points with the shortest possible length. This shortest network must be a tree and is called a Steiner Minimal Tree (SMT). It may contain vertices different from the points which are to be connected. Such points are called Steiner points. Steiner's Problem seems disarmingly simple, but it is rich with possibilities and difficulties, even in the simplest case, the Euclidean plane. This is one of the reasons that an enormous volume of literature has been published, starting in 1 the seventeenth century and continuing until today. The difficulty is that we look for the shortest network overall. Minimum span ning networks have been well-studied and solved eompletely in the case where only the given points must be connected. The novelty of Steiner's Problem is that new points, the Steiner points, may be introduced so that an intercon necting network of all these points will be shorter. This also shows that it is impossible to solve the problem with combinatorial and geometric methods alone.

Book Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry

Download or read book Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry written by Csaba D. Toth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 1928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry is intended as a reference book fully accessible to nonspecialists as well as specialists, covering all major aspects of both fields. The book offers the most important results and methods in discrete and computational geometry to those who use them in their work, both in the academic world—as researchers in mathematics and computer science—and in the professional world—as practitioners in fields as diverse as operations research, molecular biology, and robotics. Discrete geometry has contributed significantly to the growth of discrete mathematics in recent years. This has been fueled partly by the advent of powerful computers and by the recent explosion of activity in the relatively young field of computational geometry. This synthesis between discrete and computational geometry lies at the heart of this Handbook. A growing list of application fields includes combinatorial optimization, computer-aided design, computer graphics, crystallography, data analysis, error-correcting codes, geographic information systems, motion planning, operations research, pattern recognition, robotics, solid modeling, and tomography.
