Book One Shoe and the Golden Medallion

Download or read book One Shoe and the Golden Medallion written by Russel Frederick Ahrens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-11-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terror strikes the world as a series of identical murders rock the globe. In each case, two people are involved. The first victim is found murdered with a bloodless hole puncturing a tattoo image of an ancient sandal. The second victim ends up missing, with nothing but a single shoe left behind. Obviously, authorities are stumped. It all comes back to altruistic billionaire Henry Wainwright, who wishes to use his wealth and knowledge to improve the world. To do so, he has deployed an army of divinely possessed Virtue Warriors. He has founded the Society for Human Virtues, intended to erase the world of ignorance and self- destruction, one dead body at a time. But what really happens to each victim? In the center of this mess is Frenchman Maury Levet, employed by Wainwright for purposes as yet unknown. As time passes, Levets suspicions increase. He notices Wainwright wears a golden medallion, and something about the piece of jewelry makes Levet uncomfortable. He doesnt trust Wainwrightwhich is why he is dismissed. When Wainwright goes missing, however, Levet experiences a supernatural transformation that brings great power. Now, Levet might fulfi ll the ultimate destiny of Wainwrights Society or he might disappear, too, leaving nothing behind but a shoe.

Book Dante s Bones

Download or read book Dante s Bones written by Guy P. Raffa and published by Belknap Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly detailed graveyard history of the Florentine poet whose dead body shaped Italy from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the Risorgimento, World War I, and Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship. Dante, whose Divine Comedy gave the world its most vividly imagined story of the afterlife, endured an extraordinary afterlife of his own. Exiled in death as in life, the Florentine poet has hardly rested in peace over the centuries. Like a saint’s relics, his bones have been stolen, recovered, reburied, exhumed, examined, and, above all, worshiped. Actors in this graveyard history range from Lorenzo de’ Medici, Michelangelo, and Pope Leo X to the Franciscan friar who hid the bones, the stone mason who accidentally discovered them, and the opportunistic sculptor who accomplished what princes, popes, and politicians could not: delivering to Florence a precious relic of the native son it had banished. In Dante’s Bones, Guy Raffa narrates for the first time the complete course of the poet’s hereafter, from his death and burial in Ravenna in 1321 to a computer-generated reconstruction of his face in 2006. Dante’s posthumous adventures are inextricably tied to major historical events in Italy and its relationship to the wider world. Dante grew in stature as the contested portion of his body diminished in size from skeleton to bones, fragments, and finally dust: During the Renaissance, a political and literary hero in Florence; in the nineteenth century, the ancestral father and prophet of Italy; a nationalist symbol under fascism and amid two world wars; and finally the global icon we know today.

Book Poems Prose and Other Lies

Download or read book Poems Prose and Other Lies written by Peter Whittlesey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Whittleseys first inspiration for writing and storytelling arose from reading when he was a boy, particularly Mark Twain and Will James. A few years later, when he was studying history at Westminster College, Whittlesey encountered the literary spirits of Jack Kerouac and J. D. Salinger in the stacks of McGill Library. Since then, he has been hauntingly guided by Kerouac and often wonders what treasures reside in J. D.s bunker files. Even so, it wasnt until many years later that Whittlesey really found his own way in writing upon his discovery of Dr. Gabriele Ricos Writing the Natural Way. Her techniques for engaging the whole mind in the creative process proved to be invaluable. With that knowledge, he has created Poems, Prose, and Other Lies. These verses and narratives explore the challenges of letting go, of becoming Somebody Someday, and other subjects that arise from the ups and downs of everyday life. Whittlesey also spins personal tales in his prose from the story of The Little Black Cat to the tale of The Wood Boy: The Legend of Mount Misery, that draw us into their worlds. In this debut collection, Whittlesey presents a whole that is as much the journey of a writer learning his craft as it is a refl ection of life in the wilderness that is our world today.
