Book The Golden Corral

Download or read book The Golden Corral written by Ed Andreychuk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A perfect blend of characterization, action and poetic images, John Ford's Stagecoach (1939) made "A" Westerns a viable product for Hollywood in the sound era. By 1990, the Western had again been on a downswing when Dances with Wolves became both a critical and commercial success. This work examines these two films and twelve others--Red River, High Noon, Shane, The Searchers, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Alamo, The Magnificent Seven, Ride the High Country, How the West Was Won, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Unforgiven--that hold unique spots in the genre's history. Full filmographic data are provided for each, along with an essay that blends plot synopsis, historical perspectives and the movie's place in the Western genre.

Book The Golden Door

Download or read book The Golden Door written by Robert T. Floyd Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing about one’s own life is not a simple task. It consumes years and years of research in addition to the recalling of experiences, many of which are unsettling. I began with an incident regarding a position applied for along with a co-worker who was like myself, a former Philadelphia police officer. How, I asked, can deference fail to exist in the arena of public service? Over the years, I have come to see that not only I have experienced these mishaps, but there are untold others, too numerous to mention. I just happen to be of African-American ancestry. This book is for them. It’s for the soldiers and airmen I served with in Vietnam, indeed it is for generations of Americans yet unborn. There is always a struggle between good and evil. Plato describes it as a two-headed horse, each wanting to go in opposite directions. In law-enforcement this arises when innocence crosses the path of corruption. In the final analysis this is to let us not forget those who tried to serve.

Book Married to Africa

Download or read book Married to Africa written by G. Pascal Zachary and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. Pascal Zachary is a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal when he finds love in, of all places, the zoo in Accra, Ghana. That is where he meets Chizo Okon, the surrogate mother for an orphaned chimpanzee. In Married to Africa, Zachary tells their warm and humorous story, which is as much about the marriage of two cultures as it is about the marriage of two people. Chizo introduces Zachary to an Africa usually overlooked by visitors. He learns about the spiritual fervor of ordinary Africans, the mysterious power of juju and the rewards of eating bushmeat and other African dishes. He learns how to haggle effectively, pick a reliable taxi driver, live on "Africa time" and adapt to being a white minority in a black society. Chizo, meanwhile, deftly adapts to living with her obruni, the local nickname for a white person. As their romance deepens, the couple learns how differently things can appear to them. While Zachary indulges a passion for traditional African art, Chizo worries about the possible evil spirits harbored in his wooden statues. When the two move to San Francisco, Chizo must learn to navigate a new world. The result is a different kind of immigrant story, powered by a series of wacky, wonderful and unforgettable tales -- such as Chizo taking a machete to Zachary's ex-wife's garden (not out of malice, of course), driving enthusiastically without a license, charming her hard-boiled Jewish mother-in-law and managing requests from poor relatives in Africa. The arrival of Chizo's teenage daughter marks the end of the beginning and the start of a new saga in this uniquely American love story. Married to Africa is a tender and charming account of a marriage and a fascinating look at how two people come to know each other across culture and race.

Download or read book Strip Cultures written by The Project on Vegas and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Las Vegas Strip, blockbuster casinos burst out of the desert, billboards promise "hot babes," actual hot babes proffer complimentary drinks, and a million happy slot machines ring day and night. It’s loud and excessive, but, as the Project on Vegas demonstrates, the Strip is not a world apart. Combining written critique with more than one hundred photographs by Karen Klugman, Strip Cultures examines the politics of food and water, art and spectacle, entertainment and branding, body and sensory experience. In confronting the ordinary on America’s most famous four-mile stretch of pavement, the authors reveal how the Strip concentrates and magnifies the basic truths and practices of American culture where consumerism is the stuff of life, digital surveillance annuls the right to privacy, and nature—all but destroyed—is refashioned as an element of decor.

Book Brooding

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Martone
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2018-03-01
  • ISBN : 082035306X
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Brooding written by Michael Martone and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of more than twenty-five essays, both meditative and formally inventive, considers all kinds of subjects: everyday objects such as keys and hats, plus concepts of time and place; the memoir; writing; the essay itself; and Michael Martone’s friendship with the writers David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen, and Kurt Vonnegut. Throughout the essays, Martone’s style expands with the incorporation of new technological platforms. Several of the pieces were written specifically for online venues, while the essays on the death of Martone’s mother and father were written on Facebook while the events happened. One essay about using new technologies in the classroom was written solely in tweets. Brooding—the book’s title and the title of an essay—draws a parallel between the disappearance of early browsers and the emergence, after seventeen years, of a brood of cicadas. Throughout these essays Martone’s words inhabit spaces where the reconnection to people in the past and the metaphors of electronic memory converge.

Book Waco Rising

  • Pages : 179 pages

Download or read book Waco Rising written by Kevin Cook and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of The New Yorker's "Best Books of 2023" A news-making account of the war between David Koresh’s Branch Davidians and the FBI, and how their standoff launched today’s militias In 1993, David Koresh and a band of heavily armed evangelical Christians took on the might of the US government. A two-month siege of their compound in Waco, Texas, ended in a firefight that killed seventy-six, including twenty-five children. America is still picking up the pieces, and we still haven’t heard the full story. Kevin Cook, who revealed the truth behind a mythic, misunderstood murder in his 2014 Kitty Genovese, finally provides the full story of what happened at Waco. He gives readers a taste of Koresh’s deadly charisma and takes us behind the scenes at the Branch Davidians’ compound, where “the new Christ” turned his followers into servants and sired seventeen children by a dozen “wives.” In vivid accounts packed with human drama, Cook harnesses never-reported material to reconstruct the FBI’s fifty-one-day siege of the Waco compound in minute-to-minute detail. He sheds new light on the Clinton administration’s approval of a lethal governmental assault in a new, definitive account of the firefight that ended so many lives and triggered the rise of today’s militia movement. Waco drew the battle lines for American extremists—in Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh’s words, “Waco started this war.” With help from sources as diverse as Branch Davidian survivors and the FBI’s lead negotiator during the siege, Cook draws a straight line from Waco’s ashes to the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol and insurrections yet to come. Unmissable reading for anyone interested in the truth of what happened in Texas three decades ago, Waco Rising is chillingly relevant today. Here is the spark that ignited today’s antigovernment militias.
