Developed and patented in England in 1737, the author takes the reader to the end of the roaring 1850s in New York Harbor. It was not until 1807 that Robert Fulton introduced the first commercially successful steamboat the “Clermont” on the Hudson River in New York. In the early 1800s sailing ships entering the harbor would lie at anchor in Sandy Hook for days and weeks waiting for wind to power them into the harbor so they could offload their cargo. Due to the expansion of shipping and commerce during the mid 1800s, sailing ships realized that small steam ferries operating between Staten Island and lower Manhattan could tow them into local wharfs to discharge their cargo and begin loading domestic goods to distant ports abroad saving valuable time. With the advent of large clipper ships, increased commerce and advanced steam boats, would lead to the rise and birth of a new industry, The Towing Business.

Most histories of the California Mother Lode have focused on the mines around the American and Yuba Rivers. However, the “Southern Mines”—those centered around Calaveras County in the central Sierra—were also important in the development of California’s mineral wealth. Calaveras Gold offers a detailed and meticulously researched history of mining and its economic impact in this region from the first discoveries in the 1840s until the present. Mining in Calaveras County covered the full spectrum of technology from the earliest placer efforts through drift and hydraulic mining to advanced hard-rock industrial mining. Healy (1839-1904), through his service to the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service. Healy arrested lawbreakers, put down mutinies aboard merchant ships, fought the smuggling of illegal liquor and firearms, rescued shipwrecked sailors from a harsh and unforgiving environment, brought medical aid to isolated villages, prevented the wholesale slaughter of marine wildlife, and explored unknown waters and lands. Captain Healy's dramatic feats in the far north were so widely reported that a New York newspaper once declared him the "most famous man in America." But Healy hid a secret that contributed to his legacy as a lonely, tragic figure. In 1896, Healy was brought to trial on charges ranging from conduct unbecoming an officer to endangerment of his vessel for reason of intoxication. As punishment, he was put ashore on half pay with no command and dropped to the bottom of the Captain's list. Eventually, he again rose to his former high position in the service by the time of his death in 1904. Sixty-seven years later, in 1971, the U.S. Coast Guard learned that Healy was born a slave in Georgia who ran away to sea at age fifteen and spent the rest of his life passing for white. This is the rare biography that encompasses both sea adventure and the height of human achievement against all odds.
