Download or read book Sedimentary Geology of Mars written by John P. Grotzinger and published by . This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often thought of as a volcanically dominated planet, the last several decades of Mars exploration have revealed with increasing clarity the role of sedimentary processes on the Red Planet. Data from recent orbiters have highlighted the role of sedimentary processes throughout the geologic evolution of Mars by providing evidence that such processes are preserved in a rock record that spans a period of over four billion years.
Download or read book Coccolithophores written by Marie-Pierre Aubry and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleobiology is arguably the next frontier in micropaleontology, and no one group may have more impact on the global environment with a more enigmatic life history than the tiny coccolithophores, whose countless calcitic skeletons are a considerable percentage of oceanic biomass, with a major role in the Earth's carbon cycle. The isolated fragments or "coccoliths" that make up vast carbonate deposits are no longer to be considered as merely sedimentary particles but as the invaluable record of once living organisms that have an important story to tell in terms of evolutionary biology. It is in this perspective that Coccolithophores: Cenozoic Discoasterales-Biology, Taxonomy, Stratigraphy presents a century of research on a recently extinct group whose species consistently represented over half of the coccolithophore communities in low latitudes. Their distinctive morphologies and structures, described and abundantly illustrated in this volume, render them ideal for biological and phylogenetic reconstruction as well as tentative physiological interpretations. The application to biostratigraphy, biochronology and chronostratigraphy of the several hundred species in the order is also reviewed and complemented by an appendix (https://www.sepm.org/supplemental-materials) of four catalogues with genera and species organized according to comprehensive keys of determination. While the book is designed to inform biologists and earth scientists interested in plankton evolutionary history, the appendix will assist students and professionals alike in academia and industry with the taxonomy of the order and the dating of marine sedimentary successions in which they occur.

Book excerpt: ' this volume represents perhaps the best available report on state-of-the-science cretaceous research. Some may query the wisdom of grand schemes such as the GSGP, believing that science is best left to the imaginative individual. This useful volume offers a persuasive counter-argument. That it speaks with many voices (if not languages) is to be expected and indeed adds to its strength.' Cretaceous Research 11, 1990

Download or read book The Changing Role of Geological Surveys written by P.R. Hill and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior managers and Heads of Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) from around the world have contributed a collection of papers to provide a benchmark on how GSOs are responding to national and international needs in a rapidly changing world. GSOs continue to provide key scientific information about Earth systems, natural hazards and climate change. As countries adopt sustainable development principles and the public increasingly turns to social media to find information about resource and environmental issues, the generation and communication of Earth science knowledge become increasingly important. This volume provides a snapshot of how GSOs are adapting their activities to this changing world. The different national perspectives presented converge around several common themes related to resources, environment and big data. Climate change and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals provide an increased incentive for GSOs of the world to work in harmony, to generate knowledge of Earth systems and to provide solutions for sustainable management of the planet.
Download or read book The Geology of Stratigraphic Sequences written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence stratigraphy represents a new paradigm in geology. The principal hypothesis is that stratigraphie successions may be subdivided into discrete sequences bounded by widespread unconformities. There are two parts to this hypothesis. First, it suggests that the driving forces which generate sequences and their bounding unconformities also generate predietable three-dimensional stratigraphies. In re cent years stratigraphie research guided by sequence models has brought about fundamental im provements in our understanding of stratigraphie processes and the controls of basin architecture. Sequence models have provided a powerful framework for mapping and numerieal modeling, enabling the science of stratigraphy to advance with rapid strides. This research has demonstrated the importance of a wide range of processes for the generation of cyclie sequences, including eustasy, tectonics, and orbital forcing of climate change. The main objective of this book is to document the sequence record and to discuss our current state of knowledge about sequence-generating processes.

Download or read book At the Top of the Grand Staircase written by Alan L. Titus and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the location of one of the best-known terrestrial records for the late Cretaceous. Prior fieldwork confirmed the richness of the area, but a major effort begun in the new century has documented over 2,000 new vertebrate fossil sites, provided new radiometric dates, and identified five new genera of ceratopsids, two new species of hadrosaur, a probable new genus of hypsilophodontid, new pachycephalosaurs and ankylosaurs, several kinds of theropods (including a new genus of oviraptor and a new tyrannosaur), plus the most complete specimen of a Late Cretaceous therizinosaur ever collected from North America, and much more. The research documented in this book is rewriting our understanding of Late Cretaceous paleobiogeography and dinosaur phyletics. At the Top of the Grand Staircase: The Late Cretaceous of Southern Utah is a major stepping stone toward a total synthesis of the ecology and evolution of the Late Cretaceous ecosystems of western North America.
Download or read book From River to Rock Record written by Stephanie K. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last couple of decades, fluvial geomorphology and fluvial sedimentary geology have been developing in parallel, rather than in conjunction as might be desired. This volume is the result of the editors' attempt to bridge this gap in order to understand better how sediments in modern rivers become preserved in the rock record, and to improve interpretation from that record of the history of past environmental conditions. The catalyst for the volume was a conference with the same title hosted at the University of Aberdeen School of Geosciences, in Aberdeen, Scotland, on 12-14 January 2009.
Download or read book Sea Level Change written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-level rise may be one of the consequences of global warming. To understand changes in sea level caused by the "greenhouse effect," we must understand the factors that have caused the sea level to fluctuate significantly throughout history. This new volume explores current views among scientists on the causes and mechanisms of sea-level change. The authors examine measurement programs and make recommendations aimed at improving our understanding of the factors that affect sea level. It will be welcomed by scientists, engineers, and policymakers concerned about "greenhouse" issues and sea-level change, the environmental community, researchers, and students.
