Book Gender Wage Gap Glass Ceiling V S Glass Floors

Download or read book Gender Wage Gap Glass Ceiling V S Glass Floors written by Pydayya Rajeev and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being in an equalitarian world does not imply a world of serenity for both sexes. World labour force is growing with both sexes but the issue of inequality still remains without exception in many developed and under-developed economies. The purpose of this book is to analyse the presence of gender wage discrimination across sectors in the Mauritian economy. I made use of Continuous Multipurpose Survey Data (CMPHS) from the Statistics Mauritius for 5 consecutive years: 2006-2010 and applied some metrics. The gender wage gap in public sector is lower than in private sector and there is evidence of sticky floors which outweighs glass ceilings across years and in both sectors. Moreover, discrimination level is higher across years and fairly stable. This book adds light to the gender wage gap analysis as no micro-study has been done at present for Mauritius and should especially be useful to professionals in Research and Policy Development fields, or anyone else who may be considering utilizing some information for further studies.

Book Gendering Post Soviet Space

Download or read book Gendering Post Soviet Space written by Tatiana Karabchuk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume combines approaches from three disciplines – economics, sociology, and demography – and empirically analyzes the key aspects of the labor market and social demography processes in post-Soviet transitional societies while focusing on the gender perspective. Here, readers will find empirical studies on such countries as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The volume contributes to the literature by addressing the lack of academic empirical research on gender difference issues in the labor markets of post-Soviet countries as well as gender inequalities in fertility preferences, gender disparities among the youth and elderly, the gender pay gap, gender differences in employment, and female voices. The book brings together researchers of different disciplines from a variety of countries, distinguishing this project as international and interdisciplinary. The authors use the quantitative survey micro-data approach as well as the qualitative methods of interview data analysis to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of the economic and social developments in the region regarding gender differences. The volume consists of three parts tackling the following topics: 1) gender differences and demography (family formation and fertility, youth and elderly employment); 2) gender differences and labor market (gender wage gap, motherhood wage penalty, gender differences among freelancers, and women in STEM science); and 3) gender differences, well-being, and gender equality attitudes (women’s voices, women’s collective actions, gender equality attitudes, and spending patterns of housewives).

Book The Glass Ceiling

Download or read book The Glass Ceiling written by Anina Müller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-08-24 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Gender Studies, grade: 13, , language: English, abstract: The glass ceiling is still a big and unresolved issue in workplaces for women and minorities. To give the readers a better understanding what the Glass ceiling is, this narrative will first define the term and then outline the different levels of barriers which are defined by the Federal Glass Ceiling Commission. To have a more updated study, there is also one from 2003 made by Woman in U.S. Corporate Leadership. After knowing the barriers which helps building up the Glass ceiling, the paper will examine the Glass Ceiling’s impact has on women’s lives. There are ways about how companies can help their female employees to break the glass ceiling and two of them will be introduced. However, even after breaking the glass ceiling, the fight of women is not really over because then there appears a wall which prevents them from participating equally in the upper management compared to men. To understand the topic better, a critique of the Glass ceiling, which states that it has never existed, will explain.

Book Glass Half Broken

Download or read book Glass Half Broken written by Colleen Ammerman and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the gender gap persists and how we can close it. For years women have made up the majority of college-educated workers in the United States. In 2019, the gap between the percentage of women and the percentage of men in the workforce was the smallest on record. But despite these statistics, women remain underrepresented in positions of power and status, with the highest-paying jobs the most gender-imbalanced. Even in fields where the numbers of men and women are roughly equal, or where women actually make up the majority, leadership ranks remain male-dominated. The persistence of these inequalities begs the question: Why haven't we made more progress? In Glass Half-Broken, Colleen Ammerman and Boris Groysberg reveal the pervasive organizational obstacles and managerial actions—limited opportunities for development, lack of role models and sponsors, and bias in hiring, compensation, and promotion—that create gender imbalances. Bringing to light the key findings from the latest research in psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, and economics, Ammerman and Groysberg show that throughout their careers—from entry-level to mid-level to senior-level positions—women get pushed out of the leadership pipeline, each time for different reasons. Presenting organizational and managerial strategies designed to weaken and ultimately break down these barriers, Glass Half-Broken is the authoritative resource that managers and leaders at all levels can use to finally shatter the glass ceiling.

Book Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans

Download or read book Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans written by Deborah Woo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of the United States, fluctuations in cultural diversity, immigration, and ethnic group status have been closely linked to shifts in the economy and labor market. Over three decades after the beginning of the civil rights movement, and in the midst of significant socioeconomic change at the end of this century, scholars search for new ways to describe the persistent roadblocks to upward mobility that women and people of color still encounter in the workforce. In Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans, Deborah Woo analyzes current scholarship and controversies on the glass ceiling and labor market discrimination in conjunction with the specific labor histories of Asian American ethnic groups. She then presents unique, in-depth studies of two current sites-a high tech firm and higher education-to argue that a glass ceiling does in fact exist for Asian Americans, both according to quantifiable data and to Asian American workers' own perceptions of their workplace experiences. Woo's studies make an important contribution to understanding the increasingly complex and subtle interactions between ethnicity and organizational cultures in today's economic institutions and labor markets.

Book Women Don t Ask

Download or read book Women Don t Ask written by Linda Babcock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundbreaking classic that explores how women can and should negotiate for parity in their workplaces, homes, and beyond When Linda Babcock wanted to know why male graduate students were teaching their own courses while female students were always assigned as assistants, her dean said: "More men ask. The women just don't ask." Drawing on psychology, sociology, economics, and organizational behavior as well as dozens of interviews with men and women in different fields and at all stages in their careers, Women Don't Ask explores how our institutions, child-rearing practices, and implicit assumptions discourage women from asking for the opportunities and resources that they have earned and deserve—perpetuating inequalities that are fundamentally unfair and economically unsound. Women Don't Ask tells women how to ask, and why they should.
