Download or read book The Girl With Acrylic Eyes written by Greg Krojac and published by Greg Krojac. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coppélia knows that her assigned role as a sexbot means that she must be completely compliant to her clients’ demands, no matter what they may be. But this time it’s different – she doesn’t want to submit to the whims of the customers of the Club Galatea bordello anymore. She’s had enough. She tells her client no. The client is unhappy and makes an unsuccessful grab at her with his chubby calloused hands. She repeats her refusal but the client ignores her and forces himself on her. She has the strength to rip his head off with one hand but that would contravene her programming. Besides, she has no desire to hurt any human – not even this brute. In this genre-bending first book of the Sophont trilogy, Detective Inspector Karen Chambers is called in by NewMet City Special Victims Unit to interview a prospective rape victim and is shocked when she confirms that the victim is an android. The DI’s curiosity is piqued and she resolves to find out more about Coppélia. Why does she appear to have feelings and emotions? She’s clearly not a regular android, so who built her? And why? Neither Karen nor Coppélia are prepared for the incredible truth.

Download or read book Doll s Eyes written by Bari Wood and published by Avon Books. This book was released on 1994-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wood's usual Lady Luckless is poor little rich girl Eve Klein, whose millions can't buy her relief from her other inheritance: the clairvoyant powers that have recently frightened off her husband, Sam. Hoping to confront him, Eve drives from her Connecticut estate to Sam's new house in Raven Lake, New York, where she's instantly felled by a vision of a woman mutilated and dying - the handiwork of local sociopath Adam Fuller, M.D., whose eyes ("empty ... dead ... glassy. Like a doll's eyes"') give away his utter inability to feel for others, the product of a buried childhood trauma: Fuller kills in the barren hope of feeling pity for his victims. Eve's call to the cops snares homicide legend Dave Latovsky, who takes her to see psychiatrist Terrence Bunner, who happens to have Fuller as a patient. When, at a party, Bunner lets on to Fuller that Eve - whom he won't identify - saw the killer in her vision, the mad M.D. tracks a gory path to the psychic, torturing and shooting Bunner, then a local newsman and his wife, to get Eve's name and address. Meanwhile, at Bunner's funeral, Latovsky notes Fuller's Ken-doll eyes and fingers him for the killer but can't nab him before Fuller snatches Eve, hauling her to his childhood home. There, Eve flashes on the child abuse that turned Fuller into a maniac ... A lurid, loose-jointed tale whose frantic action and emotionalism nearly obscure the familiarity (Koontz, King, etc.) of Wood's themes."--Kirkus

Book Heterosexual Plots and Lesbian Narratives

Download or read book Heterosexual Plots and Lesbian Narratives written by Marilyn Farwell and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is lesbian literature? Must it contain overtly lesbian characters, and portray them in a positive light? Must the author be overtly (or covertly) lesbian? Does there have to be a lesbian theme and must it be politically acceptable? Marilyn Farwell here examines the work of such writers as Adrienne Rich, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Jeanette Winterson, Gloria Naylor, and Marilyn Hacker to address these questions. Dividing their writings into two genres--the romantic story and the heroic, or quest, story, Farwell addresses some of the most problematic issues at the intersection of literature, sex, gender, and postmodernism. Illustrating how the generational conflict between the lesbian- feminists of twenty years ago and the queer theorists of today stokes the critical fires of contemporary lesbian and literary theory, Heterosexual Plots and Lesbian Narratives concludes by arguing for a broad and generous definition of lesbian writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His mother's neck broke while he vaguely watched . . . The ocean that was once a blanket for the village, smothered the village and killed her sister . . . And both wind up in a school that seemingly has the motto "From savage to civilized." Hotah Often getting pneumonias and being conceived by rape, Hotah lived in a Hopi village with his great-grandmother deep in her nineties but said, "The hell with a walking stick." His whole life, he had seen war sprout, such as witnessing his grandmother's brutal death and severed body parts thrown to the railroad. But most of that had not given him troubled thoughts. It was mostly his mother's hanging, perhaps, because he had to help carry her dead body back home. As an eighty-one-year-old man, Hotah recaptures his time at both home and the St. Mary's Indian Mission School he was sent to shortly after his mother's dismiss. Traumatized at the school, his memories play to him over and over again while meeting his first crush and someone he shares an unlikely bond with. Kai Kai was the only Hawaiian at the Indian Mission School, as there were no records of Hawaiian children being sent to these schools. Kai was taken with a few other villagers to a refugee camp after the tsunami but very faintly remembered how she arrived at the school. Orphaned at birth, Kai was raised by her much-older sister Haunani but lost Haunani to the storm. As a woman, she speaks of her memories at home and the mission school, which involved meeting a person whose face she never forgot.

If you knew that another good man was taking the job out of desperation, would you do anything to prevent him from getting it? What if that man's recruitment would somehow guarantee your own survival, would you encourage his candidacy? All these questions were asked of people who never thought they would find themselves in such a position, until they became mired in the chaos surrounding the hangman's replacement.

Book excerpt: A hospital is a special community: a world in itself. Hospitals have common bonds, and they also have very distinctive traits. Hospitals provide a plethora of stories. They are often humorous, sometimes tragic, or a mix of both. Hospitals truly are the embodiment of life and death. Larger hospitals often serve as a training ground for physicians, nurses, and other medical support staff. Smaller hospitals might offer the same, but they are also a special part of the community. Many times, small hospitals serve as a primary medical contact. It is an information provider, clinic, and shelter. Sadly, small hospitals are disappearing because of economics. It costs a lot of money to maintain hospitals with current equipment and appropriate staffing. When a hospital dies, it impacts all of the people who made it thrive, and all of the people who depend on its services. The stories in Code Blues are set in a fictional small hospital in New York City. It is about to be closed. Although each story can be read independently, the common thread is the impact of such closure on the community as a whole. Small hospitals are as important to the community as the neighborhood grocery store, and many of the workers living in the area are served by the hospital. Many of the stories are fictionalized anecdotes from training and working in hospitals. I have tried to offer a variety of glimpses into the complex relationships between various hospital personnel and also between staff and patients.
