Book The Girl on the 6th Floor

Download or read book The Girl on the 6th Floor written by Brian Nichols and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jenny parked just a short distance from her place of employment. She gathered her things, exited her car and began the short walk to the entrance to begin her shift... ...the next time she is aware of her surroundings it is nearly three months later and what took place while she was "away" was nothing less than horrific. Jenny contracted an extremely rare illness in March of 2013. It was 35 days before the diagnosed could be found. During this time her condition would change hour by hour and her family and friends were forced to stand by and helplessly watch as she deteriorated from a healthy and active 25-year-old woman, to someone who's physical and mental capacities resembled a newborn baby. As if this wasn't enough, many times a day Jenny would be visited by what her family came to view as demons that would trigger unpredictable and nearly indescribable behavior as well as create frightening hallucinations for Jenny, and those around her, to endure. It is no exaggeration to say that Jenny appeared to have been possessed by the devil. Her mother and father learned a new definition of "a parent's worst nightmare" and could not escape it any more than she could. Not even the doctors were able to help Jenny...or save her from the torment that the illness caused. The Girl on the 6th Floor is a truly unique story about a rare and devastating illness; told from the perspective of Jenny's father while witnessing his child going through this odyssey. This book is an honest and detailed look at what took place day-by-day coping with a devastating illness. It reveals the fear and pain of a family, the compassion and dedication of medical professionals, and the difficulties all of them faced while dealing with something they didn't understand. Surprisingly, there is also some laughter along the way.

Book excerpt: Can you create an ideal world of your own? A utopia? In 2022, the administration and staff of the University of Northern California think so; that's why they've created a cozy little campus in the hills of Placerville, secure (behind thick concrete walls) from the social chaos that prevails in the larger society. Here, they can devote themselves wholly to the life of the mind. However, problems soon appear: "Generation Z" students chafe under the campus restrictions (including mandatory use of sexual suppressant drugs), and begin an "Underground" movement of protest. History Professor Morton Thompson finds himself in the middle, as well as coping with violent attacks on the campus. A quasi-governmental agency called UniCom (creators of a database called "The BEAST" that is a terrifying violation of civil liberties) enters the picture, determined to use the situation for its own ends, leading to a thrilling and unexpected climax. Discover the difficulties in trying to flee from the problems of the world, as Professor Thompson and others await the appearance of the mysterious "Generation A" Eight lectures: The core of Professor Thompson's course in American Utopian Communities, are also appended, presenting an outline of the history of "utopian"/intentional communities in this country.

Book excerpt: In this shrewd, timely novel with the allure of old-school noir, an aging boxer and his daughter fight back against political corruption and sexual abuse. At 40, the great boxer Max Le Corre was enjoying a renaissance, back at the top of the ticket after a long absence. When he wasn’t in the ring, he worked as a driver for the mayor, Quentin Le Bars. Above all, he was a father to Laura, his 20-year-old daughter who recently returned home after trying her hand at modeling. Quentin had helped Max when he was down on his luck, a seemingly washed-up fighter, and now Max hoped he would help Laura find her bearings in town. But Laura’s meeting with Quentin reveals a darker side to the politician, setting in motion a chain of events that will pit Max against his benefactor. With deceptively simple, evocative prose, Tanguy Viel has crafted a brilliant takedown of the power imbalances that allow #MeToo situations to occur and fester.

Download or read book Woman on the Edge of Time written by Marge Piercy and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 1997-06-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as a classic of speculative fiction, Marge Piercy’s landmark novel is a transformative vision of two futures—and what it takes to will one or the other into reality. Harrowing and prescient, Woman on the Edge of Time speaks to a new generation on whom these choices weigh more heavily than ever before. Connie Ramos is a Mexican American woman living on the streets of New York. Once ambitious and proud, she has lost her child, her husband, her dignity—and now they want to take her sanity. After being unjustly committed to a mental institution, Connie is contacted by an envoy from the year 2137, who shows her a time of sexual and racial equality, environmental purity, and unprecedented self-actualization. But Connie also bears witness to another potential outcome: a society of grotesque exploitation in which the barrier between person and commodity has finally been eroded. One will become our world. And Connie herself may strike the decisive blow. Praise for Woman on the Edge of Time “This is one of those rare novels that leave us different people at the end than we were at the beginning. Whether you are reading Marge Piercy’s great work again or for the first time, it will remind you that we are creating the future with every choice we make.”—Gloria Steinem “An ambitious, unusual novel about the possibilities for moral courage in contemporary society.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer “A stunning, even astonishing novel . . . marvelous and compelling.”—Publishers Weekly “Connie Ramos’s world is cuttingly real.”—Newsweek “Absorbing and exciting.”—The New York Times Book Review

Book The Warlizard Chronicles

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My new fiance Betty and I were sitting on the couch, watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show when she looked over at me and casually said, "My first orgasm came from a dog." As I sat there stunned, trying to control my reactions and collect myself, I had two immediate thoughts: 1. Now I know why my dog likes her better. 2. I wish this were the worst thing she'd ever told me. And so begins the descent into the crazy improbable world of Warlizard, an average guy with an exceptional life. With no excuses and no apologies, Warlizard lives his life by one simple rule - "If opportunity knocks, answer the door." Gulf War Veteran, womanizer and serial troublemaker, sometimes he wins, sometimes he loses, but his stories are outlandish, extreme, fast-paced and funny as hell. Some actual reader feedback: - "You tell all women that story? You should wash out your mouth!" - "I think I could listen to your stories for hours." - "So you owe your marriage to the people who brought down the world trade center?" - "I have nothing else I can add or ask, except MORE STORIES." - "Holy s**t. I wish I was you." - "Man, you're an inspiration, seriously. F*** Tucker Max, you're the real s**t. I'm sure to remember your stories whenever there's a choice to do some crazy s**t. I used to say I'd do it for the lulz, now I'm gonna do it like WarLizard." - "You slept with another man's wife and then lied to him about it, and can say with a straight face it was the right thing to do?" - "Godda***t, I spewed out laughter too loud at work, now I have to leave because everyone knows I'm not doing s**t. F*** this is hilarious, and disconcerting, at the same time." - "He is the most interesting man in the world." - "I feel like a failure reading these stories, they're awesome." - "Your life experience makes me feel good. You good sir are somewhat of a new idol of mine. Nothing much you can do about that. Have a good day sir." - "Warlizard doesn't always drink beer, but when he does, he prefers Dos Equis." - "I just can't wrap my mind around the fact that not only a story like this exists but that a Reddit regular would be living it. And it kinda has this enthusiastic 'and then it happened...' moments in it that kinda style like you'd write fiction on the go." - "This guy is either the most creative man in the world or the most interesting man in the world. Either way..."

Book The Factory Girls

Book excerpt: The twentieth century ushered in a new world filled with a dazzling array of consumer goods. Even the poorest immigrant girls could afford a blouse or two. But these same immigrant teens toiled away in factories in appalling working conditions. Their hard work and sacrifice lined the pockets of greedy factory owners who were almost exclusively white men. The tragic Triangle Waist Factory fire in 1911 resulted in the deaths of over a hundred young people, mostly immigrant girls, who were locked in the factory. Told from the perspective of six young women who lived the story, this book reminds us why what we buy and how we vote really matter.

Download or read book The Girl on the Stairs written by Barry Ernest and published by Barry Ernest. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 22, 1963, a young Victoria Elizabeth Adams stood behind a fourth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas. She watched as John Kennedy was murdered in the streets below. Then, with a co-worker in tow, she ran down the back stairs of the building in order to get outside and determine what had happened. At that precise moment, her life changed forever. Her actions posed serious problems for the Warren Commission, already grappling with its agenda of naming Lee Harvey Oswald as the lone assassin. If Miss Adams was telling the truth, then she had descended those stairs at the same time Oswald would have been on them as he made his escape from the sixth floor sniper's nest. Yet Miss Adams saw no one. And even though the stairs were old, wooden, and creaky under any weight, she heard no one either. When Miss Adams was called to testify before a Commission attorney, she was quickly discredited, humiliated, and eventually branded a liar. Behind closed doors she pleaded with the government to conduct time tests of her actions if she was felt to have been inaccurate. She begged the government to question her co-workers, particularly the woman who had accompanied her down the stairs, if she was not believed. Instead, she was ignored. And so, knowing the truth of what she had done and now fearing for her life because of it, she went into hiding and became willing to die with that secret knowledge. Intrigued by what little was available about Miss Adams, the author went in search of her. It took him 35 years to eventually find this elusive witness. As his journey progressed, many questions arose about the assassination while others were put to rest. And in the end, the truth of what Miss Adams did was finally discovered. This is an important story, unique in this mess that continues to surround Kennedy's death. It is a story that has been buried for decades. It is an account the government did not want you to hear, and actually fabricated evidence in order to keep you from hearing it. Now, the truth can be told.
