Book excerpt: Discover wisdom of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali—the ancient text on yoga philosophy—with this “perfect guide for dipping your toe into where and how you understand the Sutras and their impact on your own life” (Book Riot) In its highest form, yoga is a practice for your body and your mind. Living the Sutras brings the wisdom of classical yoga philosophy into your life in an accessible and relevant way. The Yoga Sutras, written by the guru Patanjali over two thousand years ago, are made up of 196 aphorisms that offer potent teachings on how to deal with loss and pain, and guidance on how to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Here, Kelly DiNardo and Amy Pearce-Hayden offer an entrée to this yoga training for the mind and spirit by introducing a sutra or group of sutras on a related theme—providing a brief commentary, and writing prompts to allow you to reflect on and apply the meaning of the sutras to your life. Living the Sutras is at once an introduction to the classical philosophy, a quick guide for students and teachers, and an active self-study that helps you to engage with yoga wisdom in a deeply personal way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight studies examine key features of Chinese visual and material cultures, ranging from tomb design, metalware, ceramic pillows, and bronze mirrors, to printed illustrations, calligraphic rubbings, colophons, and paintings on Buddhist, landscape, and narrative themes. Questions addressed include how artists and artisans made their works, the ways both popular literature and market forces could shape ways of looking, and how practices and imagery spread across regions. The authors connect visual materials to funeral and religious practices, drama, poetry, literati life, travel, and trade, showing ways visual images and practices reflected, adapted to, and reproduced the culture and society around them. Readers will gain a stronger appreciation of the richness of the visual and material cultures of Middle Period China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miracles of Book and Body is the first book to explore the intersection of two key genres of sacred literature in medieval Japan: sutras, or sacred Buddhist texts, and setsuwa, or "explanatory tales," used in sermons and collected in written compilations. For most of East Asia, Buddhist sutras were written in classical Chinese and inaccessible to many devotees. How, then, did such devotees access these texts? Charlotte D. Eubanks argues that the medieval genre of "explanatory tales" illuminates the link between human body (devotee) and sacred text (sutra). Her highly original approach to understanding Buddhist textuality focuses on the sensual aspects of religious experience and also looks beyond Japan to explore pre-modern book history, practices of preaching, miracles of reading, and the Mahayana Buddhist "cult of the book."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream Sutra – Unveiling Hidden Realms chronicles the experiences of many people who were helped and healed, guided and communicated with, by the dreamer within themselves – their spirit or astral body. The unifying thread between these people was that they had a common Guru – someone who could travel out-of-body at will, heal people and even provide insights into their future. The greatest attribute of their Guru was that he also moulded his disciples into Gurus, thereby attaining a universal status of a Mahaguru, i.e. a teacher of Gurus. The fact that even 25 years after his death, this Mahaguru still communicates with and guides his devotees and disciples via their dreams, lends itself to deepening our exploration of the spiritual realms as well as of after-death existence. The anecdotal content dotting this book’s landscape enables you to recognize the power of the dream language so that the metaphorical leads into the metaphysical. The question is – are you ready to believe in the power of dreams?

Book excerpt: Sutra and Bible: Faith and the Japanese American World War II Incarceration accompanies the Japanese American National Museum's 2022 "Sutra and Bible" exhibition. Together, the exhibit and catalogue explore the role that religious teachings, practices, and communities played while Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. From the confines of concentration camps and locales under martial law to the battlegrounds of Europe, Japanese Americans drew on their faith to survive forced removal, indefinite incarceration, unjust deportation, family separation, military service, and resettlement at a time when their race and religion were seen as threats to national security. Co-edited by Dr. Emily Anderson and Dr. Duncan Ry?ken Williams, this catalogue weaves visual storytelling with auxiliary essays from thirty-two prominent voices across academic, arts, and social justice communities.

There are many applications of the concept of Guru. Guru Sutra explains the relationship between the Shishya (the Disciple) and a SiddhGuru (the Spiritual teacher). How can you identify the Guru in your life? And how can you as a disciple maximize the learning from your Guru? Find all the answers in the Guru Sutra.

Book excerpt: In the twelfth century, along the borders of the Japanese state in northern Honshu, three generations of local rulers built a capital city at Hiraizumi that became a major military and commercial center. Known as the Hiraizumi Fujiwara, these rulers created a city filled with art, in an attempt to use the power of art and architecture to claim a religious and political mandate. In the first book-length study of Hiraizumi in English, the author studies the rise of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara and analyzes their remarkable construction program. She traces the strategies by which the Hiraizumi Fujiwara attempted to legitimate their rule and grounds the splendor of Hiraizumi in the desires, political and personal, of the men and women who sponsored and displayed that art.

Book Japanese Buddhist Temples in Hawaii

Download or read book Japanese Buddhist Temples in Hawaii written by George J. Tanabe and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon entering a Japanese Buddhist temple in Hawai‘i, most people—whether first-time visitors or lifelong members—are overwhelmed by the elaborate and complex display of golden ornaments, intricately carved altar tables and incense burners, and images of venerable masters and bodhisattvas. These objects, as well as the architectural elements of the temple itself, have meanings that are often hidden in ancient symbolisms. This book, written by two local authorities on Japanese art and religion, provides a thorough yet accessible overview of Buddhism in Hawai‘i followed by a temple-by-temple guide to the remaining structures across the state. Introductory chapters cover the basic history, teachings, and practices of various denominations and the meanings of objects commonly found in temples. Taken together, they form a short primer on Buddhism in Japan and Hawai‘i. The heart of the book is a narrative description of the ninety temples still extant in Hawai‘i. Augmented by over 350 color photographs, each entry begins with historical background information and continues with descriptions of architecture, sanctuaries, statuary and ritual implements, columbariums, and grounds. Appended at the end is a chart listing each temple's denomination, membership number, and architectural type. While many Buddhist temples in Hawai‘i are active social and religious centers, a good number are in serious decline. In addition to being an introduction to Buddhism and a guide book, Japanese Buddhist Temples in Hawai‘i is an indispensable historical record of what exists today and what may be gone tomorrow. It will appeal to temple members, pilgrims, residents and tourists interested in local cultural and historic sites, and historians of Buddhism in Hawai‘i.
