Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghana, the former British colony of the Gold Coast, is historically known for being the first country to the south of the Sahara to attain political independence from colonial rule. It is known for its exports of cocoa and a variety of minerals, especially gold, and it is now an oil exporting country. But Ghana’s importance to the African continent is not only seen in its natural resources or its potential to expand its agricultural output. Rather the nation’s political history of nationalism, the history of military engagement in politics, record of economic depression and the ability to rise from the ashes of political and economic decay is the most unique character of the country. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Ghana covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 900 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Ghana.

This book shows how missiological issues of contextualization and outreach have shaped the history of the Methodist Church Ghana since the independence of Ghana from colonial rule. Ghanaians have accepted Methodism on their own terms and have reworked it to fit their needs. The Methodist Church Ghana has its roots in a Bible study group of Ghanaians, formed in 1835. Aided by British Methodist missionaries, the group developed over the next 130 years, until, in 1961, it gained autonomy from the British Methodist Conference. Central elements in the contextualization of this church include Ghanaian identity Akan culture, and Methodist missionary theology. Book Transmitting the Spirit in Missions

Download or read book Transmitting the Spirit in Missions written by Amos Jimmy Markin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transmitting the Spirit in Missions: The History and Growth of the Church of Pentecost discourses on how Pentecostalism in general has been involved in the current growth, mission, and changing face of global Christianity. It argues that African Pentecostals particularly are an integral part of the global expansion of Christianity in this century. Specifically, this book engages the history and growth of the Church of Pentecost, an African Pentecostal denomination from Ghana, to demonstrate how African Pentecostals have taken their spirituality into their own hands and planted churches in their home country, as well as other parts of the globe. The focus of this book is that African Pentecostals have achieved this feat through the experiential power and reliance of the Holy Spirit and the indigenous factor. The specific highlight is that this book is an updated analysis of the history, growth, and missions of the Church of Pentecost. Although this work is transformed from a PhD thesis, the content is presented accessibly to both the academia and general church populace, both pastors and the laity.

  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Balancing Acts written by Henry G. Brinton and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Brinton identifies the social and political phenomenon of our time -- the increasing tendency of people to live and worship in like-minded communities. Not only does Brinton explain the theological basis for this ideological segregation, but he shows in dozens of examples the way a polarized country can regain its balance. Bill Bishop, Staff Writer Austin American-Statesman American congregations are more divided than ever over a broad range of theological and social issues -- and this book outlines an innovative way to understand and address these difficult conflicts. Balancing Acts introduces readers to the two major spiritual themes that animate life in America today -- obligation and liberation -- and discusses how most Christians align themselves with one of these attitudes. One group focuses on the obligations of religious life and seeks moral clarity, while the other tends to see religion as a liberation movement and stresses God's love for the oppressed of the earth. The ability to strike a balance between these competing camps is the key to managing tension in the church and in the larger community -- and Balancing Acts provides readers with the tools to find and nurture Christian unity in the face of political, cultural, and theological diversity. Whether the issue is women in ministry, presidential politics, immigration, homosexuality, or war, this book demonstrates how common ground can be found by people of faith who are willing to perform a balancing act between obligation and liberation. In Balancing Acts, Henry Brinton draws on his own rich experience to offer a way of approaching hot-button social issues with both pastoral and prophetic care. It's a useful read for any pastor and should stimulate discussion in congregations everywhere. Art Simon, Founder and President Emeritus Bread for the World How are we to minister and serve in the church today? Here is a healthy analysis of the challenge to faithful Christians in North American congregational life, provided by a thoughtful and experienced pastor. Brinton calls us to balance the obligation-keeping necessary for life together with the liberation-seeking call of the gospel. The work deserves a careful reading by both pastors and lay leaders in congregations, as well as by seminarians preparing to serve and lead the church. Louis B. Weeks, President Union Theological Seminary & Presbyterian School of Christian Education A clear and compelling model for individuals and congregations wrestling with issues that are increasingly dividing and polarizing the church and our society. By grounding his work in the fundamental yet opposing biblical themes of obligation and liberation, Brinton provides a means for us to move from the labels of left and right, conservative and liberal, toward a common ground where dialogue and understanding are possible. Vanessa B. Andrews, Director National Cathedral Association Henry G. Brinton is the senior pastor of Fairfax Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia, and senior writer for the preaching journal Homiletics. Book Unravelling Migrants as Transnational Agents of Development

Download or read book Unravelling Migrants as Transnational Agents of Development written by Thomas Faist and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 2000s, there has been an increased interest in international migration as a central mechanism to advance what is called the development potential of international migrants. The contributions in this book argue that the current enthusiasm about the migration-development nexus should be approached from a perspective that recognizes and critically appraises the emergence of a new agent in development discourse, variably called "migrants," "diaspora," or "transnational community." The essays, which are the result of intensive student research at Bielefeld University, depart from issues raised by the migration-development nexus and ask how life-worlds and institutions are changing in the face of cross-border processes. In this way, the book is also a contribution to the different understandings of development. (Series: Politik, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft in einer globalisierten Welt - Vol. 11)

Download or read book A Listening Church written by Elochukwu Eugene Uzukwu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS. Famine. Ethnic strife. Refugees. Poverty. Debt. Environmental degradation. These form the wounded face of Africa today, the reality confronting the church of Africa. To heal Africa, Spiritan Father Elochukwu Uzukwu argues that the church in Africa must become a credible and effective agent of change by making full use of African resources--natural and sociohistorical--including traditional patterns of social organization. In order to renew itself, the church must remember that it does not exist for itself but for the people--to bear witness in Africa to the risen Lord. Focusing on the Catholic Church in Africa today, A Listening Church proposes a fresh approach to ecclesiology. Following closely on the African Synod of Bishops, Uzukwu proposes the initiation of serious theological discussion on the structure of the Church in Africa that came out of that historic occasion. Simply speaking, the African churches must listen to their people, and the Church in Rome must listen to the churches in Africa.

Written by an African Christian woman, it is a serious attempt to speak of the fullness of the Gospel to the specific African context. As one individual's struggle to give account of the hope that lies in her, it is a passionate and sincere work, and a welcome contribution to the growing genre of religious literature known as liberation theology. The author seeks not only to speak to us but also to move us and bring us to different ways of 'hearing and knowing.' She has succeeded with me. -Lamin Sanneh Center for the Study of World Religions, Harvard University This book is a remarkable synthesis of history, theology, and missions. It is one of the most important books of the decade because it is written by a Ghanian Christian woman who resides in Nigeria and has travelled the world-over demanding that we no longer allow traditional theological puzzles to go unexamined. Oduyoye's writings are like a breath of fresh air to women in ministry and in the church. -Katie G. Cannon Episcopal Divinity School Amber Oduyoye is Africa's leading woman theologian. In this book we meet a woman of faith reflecting in a scholarly and meditative way on Christianity in Africa. Book To the Ends of the Earth

  • Author : Allan Heaton Anderson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-01-04
  • ISBN : 0199911827
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book To the Ends of the Earth written by Allan Heaton Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No branch of Christianity has grown more rapidly than Pentecostalism, especially in the southern hemisphere. There are over 100 million Pentecostals in Africa. In Latin America, Pentecostalism now vies with Catholicism for the soul of the continent, and some of the largest pentecostal congregations in the world are in South Korea. In To the Ends of the Earth, Allan Heaton Anderson explores the historical and theological factors behind the phenomenal growth of global Pentecostalism. Anderson argues that its spread is so dramatic because it is an "ends of the earth" movement--pentecostals believe that they are called to be witnesses for Jesus Christ to the furthest reaches of the globe. His wide-ranging account examines such topics as the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles, the role of the first missionaries in China, India, and Africa, Pentecostalism's incredible diversity due to its deep local roots, and the central role of women in the movement. He describes more recent developments such as the creation of new independent churches, megachurches, and the "health and wealth" gospel, and he explores the increasing involvement of pentecostals in public and political affairs across the globe. Why is this movement so popular? Anderson points to such features as the emphasis on the Spirit, the "born-again" experience, incessant evangelism, healing and deliverance, cultural flexibility, a place-to-feel-at-home, religious continuity, an egalitarian community, and meeting material needs--all of which contribute to Pentecostalism's remarkable appeal. Exploring more than a century of history and ranging across most of the globe, Anderson illuminates the spectacular rise of global Pentecostalism and shows how it changed the face of Christianity worldwide.
