Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German and Flemish Masters: In the National Gallery The important and interesting collections of German and Flemish pictures in the National Gallery have scarcely received the special study which has been accorded so often to the rival schools of Italy. They have never, perhaps, been treated as a whole, nor in that intimate relation to one another which their early history demands. The literature connected with German and Flemish art is indeed extensive and increasing. Since the remarkable Exhibition held at Bruges in 1902 the early Flemish painters in particular have been subjected to the most careful and critical examination, and much that was before cloudy and vague has been defined, while many new problems have arisen. No attempt has been made in this volume to enter upon the more controversial aspects of the subject. The vexed question of attributions is after all of secondary importance to the intrinsic beauty of the pictures. The writer's object has been to trace the development of these schools through the examples in our Gallery, and to sum up in regard to them the results of the most recent criticism, acknowledging here the debt due to the indefatigable researches of writers both in this country and abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German, Flemish and Dutch Painting The painters of Germany and the Netherlands provide for the English Art-Student a field of study no less interesting than that furnished by the celebrated Italian Masters. In Germany - after a school of painters who worked with a deep and honest purpose but with no immense genius - Art, in the persons of Dürer and Holbein, made an advance of incomparable importance; and owing to the fact that Holbein spent many of his best years in England, and here painted a large number of his finest works, we have an additional reason for a careful study of the great German Renaissance. After these masters and their immediate disciples, Art gradually declined in the hands of such copyists as Mengs who was nothing better than a feeble imitator of Michelangelo, and of Denner who smothered Art by his excessive elaboration. The later revival under Cornelius and Overbeck, if it does not arouse enthusiasm, at least commands respect and admiration. The early schools of Holland and Flanders were so closely allied that it is difficult to divide their honours. To the Van Eycks of Bruges is due the discovery of an improved method of using oil as a vehicle in painting, and they and their followers have never been surpassed in technical excellence. Then followed Matsys and the early school of Antwerp, and after him came the decline, hastened by over-wrought composition and a futile straining after the style of the Italians. This decline was happily checked by the advent of Rubens, the Titian of the North, whose Art is manly, although it does not possess the idealism or religious sentiment of Italy, or even of the early Flemings. With his greatest pupil, Van Dyck, all Englishmen are familiar, and indeed this country has an almost equal claim with Flanders to rank him among her painters. That it contains, in permanent form, thirty wood-engravings by Timothy Cole, after the masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish art, is, in itself, sufficient reason for the book's existence. These engravings have been produced in the same manner, and with the same skill and care, that characterized Mr. Cole's earlier engravings after the old Italian masters. Indeed, it was the success of the Italian work that led to his undertaking the present series. Directly after completing his work in Italy, Mr. Cole was asked by the managers of The Century to go to Holland and undertake the translation of the great Dutchmen. In 1892 he removed from Italy to Amsterdam, where he remained for a year, engraving the pictures chosen for reproduction from the Holland galleries. He then went back to Paris, where he has remained up to the present time, working from the Dutch and Flemish pictures in the Louvre and elsewhere. In every instance Mr. Cole has produced his engraving with the original picture before him, the photograph being thrown upon the block and its insufficiencies or inequalities being corrected by consulting the original. In this way absolute fidelity to the original has been obtained, not only in line and in modeling, but in giving the exact values of colors under light and under shadow. In determining the truth of a form, a light, or a tone, Mr. Cole's long experience has made him an expert, and though passing from Italy to Holland, - a change from line to color, - he has easily adapted himself to the new point of view, and has interpreted the new methods with the same artistic sympathy that marked his former work.
