Book Basic Geology of the Santa Margarita Area San Luis Obispo County California

Download or read book Basic Geology of the Santa Margarita Area San Luis Obispo County California written by Earl W. Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Basic Geology of the Santa Margarita Area, San Luis Obispo County, California The Santa Margarita area of investigation lies astride the Rinconada fault, which divides the area into two distinct geologic and physiographic terranes - the La Panza Range to the east and the Santa Lucia Range to the west. The La Panza Range consists of Cretaceous granodiorite and adamellite with minor associated schist of the Salinian block. This is overlain by unnamed Upper Cretaceous sandstone and conglomerate and a relatively thin sequence of marine and nonmarine sedimentary rocks of Oligocene(?) to Holocene age. In contrast, "basement" rocks of the Santa Lucia Range consist of the chaotic Franciscan melange - a tectonic unit of probable late Mesozoic age. Overlying this are thrust plates of: 1) serpentinite and an intrusive complex of ultramafic-mafic rocks, 2) mafic volcanic rocks with chert, and 3) incomplete Great Valley-like sedimentary sequences of the Toro and Atascadero Formations of Late Jurassic to Late Cretaceous age. Tertiary marine and nonmarine sequences of sedimentary and volcanic rocks rest unconformably on the older units - the best preserved sequence being the Vaqueros, Monterey, and Santa Margarita Formations of Miocene age along the northeast margin of the Santa Lucia Range. Aside from being stratigraphically complex, most of the formations are severely faulted and folded as a result of two or more prolonged periods of tectonism. Late Mesozoic to early Tertiary thrust faulting is largely obscured by northwest-trending faults and folds of Miocene to Pleistocene (Holocene?) age. The principal structures are the Rinconada and "Nacimiento" fault zones and the intervening Santa Margarita syncline. The importance of the Rinconada fault is manifest in the highly contrasting rock units that are truncated by and juxtaposed along the fault. Correlation of a unique giant-boulder conglomerate (Simmler Formation?) and associated marine beds of the Vaqueros Formation with a similar apparently offset sequence of rocks 33 miles to the northwest suggests large-scale right-lateral displacement along the Rinconada fault and related connecting faults. Slivers of Franciscan rocks exposed along the southern segment of the Rinconada fault suggest that the fault is the local boundary between the Salinian and Franciscan (Nacimiento) blocks and that the "Nacimiento" fault zone lies totally within the Franciscan terrane in the map area. The ill-defined "Nacimiento" fault zone extends the length of the map area (18 miles) and appears to truncate the Rinconada fault at an acute angle at the east margin of the area. The "Nacimiento" zone consists of two principal fault elements - thrust and reverse faults that commonly dip southwest and near vertical faults. Although not unique to the map area, the southwest-dipping faults are in sharp contrast to the principal northeast-dipping faults reported to the northwest and southeast along the so-called Sur-Nacimiento fault zone (Vedder and Brown, 1968; Page, 1970a). At least 24 mineral deposits have been prospected in the map area, but only crushed and broken stone and sand and gravel have been produced in significant amounts. The Santa Margarita granite quarry is the principal source of high-quality aggregate and riprap In San Luis Obispo County. Book Tectonics Sedimentary Basins and Provenance A Celebration of the Career of William R Dickinson

Download or read book Tectonics Sedimentary Basins and Provenance A Celebration of the Career of William R Dickinson written by Raymond V. Ingersoll and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a remarkable combination of intellect, self-confidence, engaging humility, and prodigious output of published work, William R. Dickinson influenced and challenged three generations of sedimentary geologists, igneous petrologists, tectonicists, sandstone petrologists, archaeologists, and other geoscientists. A key figure in the plate-tectonic revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, he explained how the distribution of sediments on Earth's surface could be traced to tectonic processes, and is widely recognized as a founder of modern sedimentary basin analysis. This volume consists of 31 chapters related to Dickinson's research interests; many of the authors are his former students, their students, and their students' students, demonstrating his continuing profound influence. The papers in this volume are an impressive tribute to the depth and breadth of Bill Dickinson's contributions to the geosciences.
