Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology and Ore Deposits of the Virgilina District of Virginia and North Carolina In order to insure uniformity for the district as a whole, the same geologist, Doctor Francis B. Laney, was employed by the Virginia and North Carolina Geological Surveys to make the survey in the two states under the general supervision of the State Geologists of Virginia and North Carolina. Doctor Laney was assisted in the field work in North Carolina for a part of the time by Doctor Joseph E. Pogue, of the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey; and, in Virginia, by Mr. Joel H. Watkins, of the Virginia Geological Survey. The investigation covers an area of approximately 550 square miles, including parts of Charlotte, Halifax, and Mecklenburg counties, Virginia, and parts of Granville and Person counties, North Carolina. Chapter I gives a short but concise geographic sketch of the district, including loca tion, topography, drainage, soil, and climate, closing with a complete account of previous geologic work in the district in the form chiefly of an annotated bibliography. Chapters II and III discuss the general geology of the district and give a detailed description and classification of the rocks, their structure and metamorphism. Chapter IV comprises a detailed description of the veins and ores, in which the mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals is fully described, and the relations of the copper-bearing sulphides to each other and the origin and deposition of the ores are dis cussed. Chapter V, entitled, The Mines and Ores of the Virgilina District, gives a full description of the individual mines and prospects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Deposits of the James River-Roanoke River Manganese District, Virginia Barite was mined between 1874 and 1935; about a dozen deposits are known. The Hewitt mine near Evington, which was closed down in 1935, was the largest producer in the state. Recorded production Of Campbell County for the period 1911 - 1935, inclusive, amounted to short tons of barite, much Of which apparently came from the Hewitt mine. The potential reserves Of barite in the district are difficult to appraise. Reserves in known deposits appear to be small, but it is possible that deposits comparable in size to the Hewitt deposit await discovery. Copper ore is reported to have been mined in the Glades, Amherst County, and along Wreck Island Creek, Appomattox County, before the Revolutionary War. Work was done later in the Glades area and also at the Old Bishop mine in Campbell County. Recorded production of copper ore from the district amounts to 15 tons, which was shipped from the Glades in 1880. Reserves of copper ore are judged to be insignificant. Stone has been quarried at numerous places over a period of many years. White and blue marbles have been used mostly for making agricultural lime, as flux in the Old iron furnaces, and in masonry construction, quartzite, green stone, and Lynchburg gneiss have been quarried mainly for railroad and high way ballast, and for construction purposes. White marble and quartzite have been quarried in recent years in two quarries operated by the State, and could be quarried from other sites on a more extensive scale.
