Book The Genesis of the Common Market

Download or read book The Genesis of the Common Market written by W.O. Henderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1985. When modern sovereign states were first established in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries they did not immediately assume full control over their national economies. The arrangements inherited from the middle-ages survived for some time so that ports, inland commercial centres, provinces and even private persons retained a wide measure of control over the movement of goods from one place to another. This study looks at the rise and development of the great industries of Western Europe through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Common Market of the twentieth century owed much to the pioneer work of nineteenth-century statesmen who attempted in various ways to liberalize European trade.

Download or read book The History of the European Union written by Giuliano Amato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2017, but celebrations were muted by Brexit and the growing sense of a crisis of identity. However, as this seminal work shows, the history and ambition of the European Union are considerable. Written by key stakeholders who, between them, acted as architects, adjudicators and arbitrators of the project, it presents the definitive history of the first two generations of the European Union. This book revisits the birth and consolidation of the great project of a united Europe and the political, institutional, judicial and economical frameworks of the European Union: from the process towards integration, to the advancements and the impasses in building a political union.

In the aftermath of Brexit, and in the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the book is particularly timely and topical, offering new and deeper insights on the complex and constantly evolving social dimension of the EU, ultimately reflecting on how the objective of (re)constituting the EU as a "highly competitive social market economy" might best be achieved.

Book The Origins of Mercosur

Download or read book The Origins of Mercosur written by G. Gardini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processes of democratization and regionalization in South America ran parallel to one another between 1985 and 1991. However, the nature of this relationship is by no means clear. This book explores the diplomatic history of the formation of Mercosur and analyzes the precise place of democracy in the process. At the methodological level, a combination of hitherto unexamined documents and extensive interview material makes for a novel oral history approach to diplomatic studies. At the theoretical level, a melding of cognitive approaches to foreign policy making and realist theory of international relations provides a nuanced but systematic explanation of events.
