Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1969, Ethan Allen has been the subject of three biographical studies, all of which indulge in sustaining and revitalizing the image of Allen as a physically imposing Vermont yeoman, a defender of the rights of Americans, an eloquent military hero, and a master of many guises, from rough frontiersman to gentleman philosopher. Seeking the authentic Ethan Allen, the authors of this volume ask: How did that Ethan Allen secure his place in popular culture? As they observe, this spectacular persona leaves little room for a more accurate assessment of Allen as a self-interested land speculator, rebellious mob leader, inexperienced militia officer, and truth-challenged man who would steer Vermont into the British Empire. Drawing extensively from the correspondence in Ethan Allen and his Kin and a wide range of historical, political, and cultural sources, Duffy and Muller analyze the factors that led to Ethan Allen's two-hundred-year-old status as the most famous figure in Vermont's past. Placing facts against myths, the authors reveal how Allen acquired and retained his iconic image, how the much-repeated legends composed after his death coincide with his life, why recollections of him are synonymous with the story of Vermont, and why some Vermonters still assign to Allen their own cherished and idealized values.

Book Quite Ready to Be Sent Somewhere

Download or read book Quite Ready to Be Sent Somewhere written by Aldace Freeman Walker and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native Vermonter Aldace Freeman Walker, valedictorian of Middlebury College's Class of 1862, future lawyer and Chairman of the Board of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, gave his commencement speech in the uniform of a First Lieutenant, U.S. Volunteers, and promptly set off for war. After nearly a month of initial training in Brattleboro, Vermont, Walker's regiment, the Eleventh Vermont Infantry, arrived at the Seat of War in early September 1862. For the next twenty months Walker and his regiment occupied the forts in the northeastern quadrant of the Defenses of Washington, drilling socializing and fretting that the war might pass them by. in mid-May, 1864, as Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac began the bloody Overland Campaign against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, the Vermont "Heavies," as they came to be known, were called up to active campaigning, joined the famous "Old Vermont Brigade," in the Sixth Corps, and participated in every battle of that unit from Spotsylvania until the end of the war. Walker's 288 letters to his parents and younger sister are regular, often long, and always lucid and opinionated, Historian Benjamin Franklin Cooling III, who has written extensively on the defenses of Washington during the Civil War, opined that " no better account of the 'life and times' of junior officers in the wartime defenses of Washington remains" than Walker's letters home.

Book From Jeep Driver to General

Download or read book From Jeep Driver to General written by Jesse M. Allen and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retired General Jesse Allen saw it all in his military career. An army jeep driver in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving General Patton's Third Army in World War II, an air force fighter pilot in Korea, and a fighter squadron commander in Vietnam, Allen held every rank from private to two-star general. A cultural history as well as a memoir, From Jeep Driver to General reveals an insider's perspective of the U.S. military during some of its most significant triumphs and failures. General Allen offers his insights on racial divides in the military, the policy decisions that led to the loss of thousands of American lives in Korea and Vietnam, and a number of Cold War standoffs with Russian interests around the world. As an operations officer in Tactical Air Command, General Allen was even part of a team tasked with outlining plans to invade Cuba in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Written with candor, directness, and the bravado of a fighter pilot, From Jeep Driver to General tells the story of a man from humble beginnings who rose to the highest ranks of the greatest military in the world. General Allen had a front-row seat at events that never made it to the newspapers or history books. The general recounts these events in vivid detail as he provides a window into contemporary American history.
