Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acts 17:11 tells us that the Christians in the church at Berea willingly received the Word of God and daily searched the scriptures in order to determine the accuracy of the things taught to them. Similarly, Something to Think About: Things Not Taught in School looks to the scriptures in order to determine the accuracy of the teachings presently presented to our generation. This book is a series of Bible studies that look into the foundation of the Christian faith. Based on scriptural references, it looks at not only what Christians believe but why they believe as they do. Each study is written for a new believer, but the subject matter is of great value also to an older believer who is looking into the elements of his or her faith. Most of the studies presented begin as a word study on one of the basic building blocks of our Christian faith. A quick look into the book reveals that the author relies heavily on the scriptures to make a point. This methodology is used for two reasons: (1) the author believes that the truth resides not in his words but in God's word, and (2) he firmly believes that the word of God can and does explain itself when properly presented with other supportive scriptures. This book will cause you to reflect on the things that you have been taught. In fact, many of the teachings presented in the book came from questions asked by fellow believers during Bible studies conducted by the author. The intent of this work is not to question your faith but to establish and ground your faith in the scriptural proofs found in the Bible.

Book The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13

Download or read book The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 written by Arthur Pink and published by Darolt Books. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Arthur Walkington Pink (1 April 1886 – 15 July 1952) was an English Bible teacher who sparked a renewed interest in the exposition of Calvinism or Reformed Theology. Little known in his own lifetime, Pink became "one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century." Arthur Walkington Pink was born in Nottingham, England, to a corn merchant, a devout non-conformist of uncertain denomination, though probably a Congregationalist. Otherwise, almost nothing is known of Pink's childhood or education except that he had some ability and training in music. As a young man, Pink joined the Theosophical Society and apparently rose to enough prominence within its ranks that Annie Besant, its head, offered to admit him to its leadership circle.[4] In 1908 he renounced Theosophy for evangelical Christianity. Desiring to become a minister but unwilling to attend a liberal theological college in England, Pink very briefly studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1910 before taking the pastorate of the Congregational church in Silverton, Colorado. In 1912 Pink left Silverton, probably for California, and then took a joint pastorate of churches in rural Burkesville and Albany, Kentucky. In 1916, he married Vera E. Russell (1893–1962), who had been reared in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Pink's next pastorate seems to have been in Scottsville. Then the newlyweds moved in 1917 to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where Pink became pastor of Northside Baptist Church. By this time Pink had become acquainted with prominent dispensationalist Fundamentalists, such as Harry Ironside and Arno C. Gaebelein, and his first two books, published in 1917 and 1918, were in agreement with that theological position. Yet Pink's views were changing, and during these years he also wrote the first edition of The Sovereignty of God (1918), which argued that God did not love sinners and had deliberately created "unto damnation" those who would not accept Christ. Whether because of his Calvinistic views, his nearly incredible studiousness, his weakened health, or his lack of sociability, Pink left Spartanburg in 1919 believing that God would "have me give myself to writing." But Pink then seems next to have taught the Bible with some success in California for a tent evangelist named Thompson while continuing his intense study of Puritan writings.

Book The Fourfold Gospel

  • Publisher : Deward Publishing
  • Release : 2010-03

Download or read book The Fourfold Gospel written by J. W. McGarvey and published by Deward Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic Harmony of the Gospels by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton with interspersed comments. Attractively re-typeset, this enduring work is a valuable resource to modern Bible students. "In most commentaries a fifth or sixth of the space is taken up in drawing distinctions between the texts of the four Gospels, while in this work these distinctions are placed before the reader's eye, where he can see them for himself at a glance. Moreover, in other commentaries, which give the text, another sixth or seventh of the work is taken up in reprinting in the notes that portion of the text concerning which the commentator wishes to speak. Our interjected method avoids all this needless repetition, and makes it possible for us to present the comment with the least preliminary verbiage or introductory setting. Time is also saved because the reader does not have to look back and forth from the text at the top to the comment at the bottom of the page. Again, other commentaries lose a large amount of space by using the King James text. Those which preceded the revision waste space correcting the translation and modernizing its English: those published since the revision suffer a similar waste by drawing endless comparisons between the two texts. By choosing the American revision as the basis for our work, we have a text which needs but little explanation or apology, and we are thereby enabled to employ the reader's time and strength to his best advantage." --Excerpted from the Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of Formgeschichte seeks to help in answering the historical questions as to the nature and trustworthiness of our knowledge of Jesus, and also in solving a theological problem properly so-called. It shows in what way the earliest testimony about Jesus was interwoven with the earliest testimony about the salvation which had appeared in Jesus Christ. Thereby it attempts to emphasise and illuminate the chief elements of the message upon which Christianity was founded." From the Author's Preface Ably translated by Bertram Lee-Woolf, this is the classic exposition of the German school of theology known as Formgeschichte or "the criticism of literary form", which through literary and historical analysis seeks to understand the origins of the traditions of the New Testament, and in so doing bring to light the original intentions and interests of those earliest traditions.

Book excerpt: Like his original hearers many people today find Jesus' sayings hard. Some sayings are hard because they are difficult to understand, others because the demands they make on us are only too clear. F. F. Bruce examines seventy of the hard sayings of Jesus to clear away the cultural and historical difficulties which keep us from grappling with the real challenge of Jesus' message. Evident in each chapter is Bruce's keen evangelical scholarship and pastoral insight.
