Book excerpt: A series of water samples were collected from the test section of the Garfield Thomas 48-inch diameter water tunnel and analyzed for particulate shape, size, and elemental composition. These collections took place over a two week period of time and over a range of test section flow conditions. The analyses have shown that the standard deviation of the particulate average diameter is 2.1 microns, that they are typically non-spherical in shape with an average fineness ratio of 0.65, and that the major elements are aluminum and silicon with minor and trace elements consisting of chlorine, calcium, iron, nickel and zinc. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the project was to plan and implement the necessary Garfield Thomas Water Tunnel mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation upgrades to support R & D for the next generation platforms and propulsors. However, in order to appropriately assess designs intended to meet the future hydrodynamic and acoustic goals, additional improvements in tunnel quieting and unsteady flow and acoustic signal processing were required. In addition, improved accuracy and resolution were needed for validation of design tools that will allow "out of the box" design tradeoffs at the small computational resolutions necessary for acoustics. This report describes the systems acquired under the grant.

Book excerpt: Current research at the Garfield Thomas Water Tunnel of the Applied Research Laboratory, The Pennsylvania State University is in the areas of hub vortex cavitation, the effects of polymer additives, roughness effects and thermodynamic effects. Primary emphasis in this paper will be on the first two areas for the flow regime of limited cavitation. The effects of Reynolds number and vortex breakdown on hub vortex cavitation are presented. Experimental results for the effects of polymer additives on shear flow and on flows about axisymmetric bodies are discussed. A brief description of research on roughness and thermodynamic effects completes the paper. (Author).

Book excerpt: The 48-inch (121.92 cm) diameter Garfield Thomas Water Tunnel of the Applied Research Laboratory was recently used to compare the relative cavitation characteristics of propellers operating on a surface ship hull. A basic objective of the investigation was to develop a method of using this facility for surface ship propeller evaluations. Evaluation of a propeller operated with a model hull in a water tunnel so that the three-dimensionality of the flow is maintained is one of several techniques of testing surface ship propellers. Although neither Froude nor Reynolds number scaling was applicable, it was demonstrated that meaningful cavitation results could be obtained if the flow conditions in the plane of the propeller matched those measured in towing tank tests where the effect of the free surface was present.
