Download or read book The Garden That I Love Second Series Classic Reprint written by Alfred Austin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden That I Love Second Series The Longest day.-some too partial persons have been pleased to say that not only the writing of books concerning gardens, but the growing atfec tion for them, owes something to The Garden that I Love. I am so little of an author, though so much of a gardener in a small way, that I fear the expression of this belief gives one a certain amount of pleasure, since even the most unambitious persons have, in their hearts, the foible of self complacency as much as the most soaring. But this weakness receives its corrective from Lamia's irony and the Poet's chastening sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden That I Love I could live in it.' I suppose I smiled; for a Whole life passed on a piece of earth fifteen feet square, part of which is dedicated to a gravel path, seems a somewhat narrow existence. But, after all, what is narrow? The Garden that I Love is, I allow, a trifle larger than that but to the owner of Wilton or Albury I imagine it would appear pitiably small. Withal, not only could I spend'all my days in it, but, as a fact, I do so and the only complaint I ever have to make concerning it is when weeds grow apace or shrubberies become unconscionably untidy and then I blame myself, and say to Veronica, who has often warned me against what she calls my mania for expansion, that I fear it is too large. Gentle as she always is with me, she cannot resist quoting my tardy testimony to the fulfilment of her own predictions. A wise man never says Med culpd to a woman. But then I have no pretensions to be wise, save in love for my garden and for Veronica. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reward of Patient Love: And Flowers From the Garden of Thought I am a grandson of Gen. Wm, Putnam who, as a Whig, with other leaders made demand on the Canadian and British parliaments for s responsible form of government. The so-called demand and the clash that followed are known as the Canadian Rebellion of '37. The Whig obtained that for which they took up arms, but certain leaders were marked. My grandfather was one of these and a price was set on his head. The result of the conflict was, that the Whigs were victors in defeat. They got what they demand, as the price of peace, but the Tories remained in power. During the unsettled period, while amnesties were being arranged and settled, my grandfather remained in Detroit, Mich. He was, however, induced by a Tory, who had professed friendship, to believe that he might safely return to his family and property. He crossed into Canada at Detroit but had not gone far when he found himself surrounded by a large party, led by the Tory who persuaded him to cross. They captured only his body. He was buried where he fell, and near him were buried, his betrayer and six more of those who tried to take him. He left a family of seven children with their mother. Book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Download or read book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil written by John Berendt and published by Random House. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Book Onward and Upward in the Garden

Download or read book Onward and Upward in the Garden written by Katharine S. White and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1925 Harold Ross hired Katharine Sergeant Angell as a manuscript reader for The New Yorker. Within months she became the magazine’s first fiction editor, discovering and championing the work of Vladimir Nabokov, John Updike, James Thurber, Marianne Moore, and her husband-to-be, E. B. White, among others. After years of cultivating fiction, White set her sights on a new genre: garden writing. On March 1, 1958, The New Yorker ran a column entitled “Onward and Upward in the Garden,” a critical review of garden catalogs, in which White extolled the writings of “seedmen and nurserymen,” those unsung authors who produced her “favorite reading matter.” Thirteen more columns followed, exploring the history and literature of gardens, flower arranging, herbalists, and developments in gardening. Two years after her death in 1977, E. B. White collected and published the series, with a fond introduction. The result is this sharp-eyed appreciation of the green world of growing things, of the aesthetic pleasures of gardens and garden writing, and of the dreams that gardens inspire.
