Book The Game of British East Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Game of British East Africa Classic Reprint written by C. H. Stigand and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game of British East Africa It is civilised weapons alone, especially when in the hands of irresponsible black men, that irreparably upset the balance of Nature. The black hunter, armed with primitive weapons, and the beast of prey, take their toll of life, but appear never to exterminate or even sensibly diminish the number of game. Civilisation is advancing with such rapid strides in British East Africa that year by year it becomes more difficult to find and observe game still undisturbed by the sportsman and hunter. Another generation and perhaps there will be little or no opportunities of observing these animals as they existed before the net of civilisation had been drawn round them. It thus behoves anyone who has had the fortune to be thrown much with wild and unsophisticated animals to leave as careful a record as possible of their ways and manners of living while there is still opportunity, and to study them in their natural state. It is this consideration which has induced me to attempt the task of describing the wild life of the country to the best of my ability. I quite realise that I am not specially qualified for the work, and that there are many with greater experience of the country and game than I possess. However, I hope that perhaps in later years, when the lion no longer roars over the plain and the rhino has ceased to wander in the open, that this book, in conjunction with many others of a similar nature, may be of some little value in reconstructing what will then be past natural history. If the deficiencies of this book only bring home to any more experienced sportsmen, who have nut yet done so, the necessity for recording their observations, it will not be without its value. Book The Big Game of Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Big Game of Africa Classic Reprint written by Richard Tjader and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Game of Africa This volume is not only a narrative of my own wanderings and experiences in that continent, but is also intended to be a guide book to those many who are interested in the life and habits of the African game animals as well as in the best way of stalking these with either camera or gun. For in the many good books on hunting in the Dark Continent, little or nothing has been said that may help the would-be African big game hunter in the selection of the proper outfit, guns, cameras, curing materials, etc., nor do they give him any definite information as to where, when and how to secure the game he wants, and none of them contains the most necessary introduction to the ki-swahili language, even a slight knowledge of which will prove of immense help to the sportsman when hunting in British East Africa, German East Africa and Uganda. This book is the result of my own experiences and observations during three different expeditions to British East Africa, and con tains the most reliable information I was able to obtain from other sportsmen and professional hunters, as well as from the wild sons of that wonderful game country who, themselves, spend most of their lives roaming around among the Big Game of Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Safari: Big Game Hunting in British East Africa, With Studies in Bird-Life Should the title of this work convey no significance, the fact would show that there yet remains Something new from Africa. That Arabic term Safari has no precise equivalent in our British tongue, yet is in daily use throughout British territories six times larger than the home islands. Hence I venture to introduce it to our common language. Its interpretation will presently become clear to those who read this book. Book Shots and Snapshots in British East Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shots and Snapshots in British East Africa Classic Reprint written by Edward Bennet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shots and Snapshots in British East Africa What really renders that first journey up the Uganda Railway remarkable is the quantity of game you see in the reserve - kongoni, Grant and Thomson's gazelles, zebra, in vast numbers; now and then ostriches, a herd of Wildebeest, or a string of giraffe; sometimes a lion or a rhino. These animals do not fear the train, so you get a good View of them; but you must not conclude that they are as easy of approach when you are on foot. On arriving in most countries there is usually one question for which the newcomer should be prepared. In Sydney I am told he must admire the fine harbour; in Ireland he will probably be asked what he thinks about Home Rule or William the Third; and in British East Africa he will soon be asked what he thinks about the Uganda Railway. The carriage I travelled up in leaked in a rainstorm, and I said what I thought of the Uganda Railway in language that could not be mistaken. But I soon saw that this was not what I was meant to say. My only apology for offering to the public The Big Game of Africa is my desire to comply with the wishes of many friends, who, having heard my lectures on Africa, have repeatedly asked me to issue something like them in book form. This volume is not only a narrative of my own wanderings and experiences in that continent, but is also intended to be a guide book to those many who arc interested in the life and habits of the African game animals as well as in the best way of stalking these with either camera or gun.
