Book Photographic Education and Careers

Download or read book Photographic Education and Careers written by James B. Wight-Waltman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Photography offers a wide variety of opportunities. The field is expected to expand at a moderate rate of growth over the nest decade and competition for jobs is likely to remain stiff. Photography is a competitive field but one which can offer a great deal of satisfaction in terms of independence, interaction with a wide variety of people, and creative problem solving. Photographers, especially ones is large urban areas, can be well paid for their services but they must also be willing to put in long hours. The larger the market, or population base, the more likely a photographer would be to specialize in just one area of photography; i.e., commercial, industrial, fashion, sports. Whereas, in a smaller market, a photographer may have to offer a variety of photographic services in order to operate a successful business, While almost one half of all photographers are self employed, salaried positions are found with photographic studios, newspapers, magazines, advertising agencies, television stations, motion picture studios and large companies or corporations. Some photographers are able to support themselves through photography as a fine art, although their numbers are small. Desirable characteristics for a photographer would include artistic ability, some degree of manual dexterity, accuracy, and enjoyment of working with detail. He or she should enjoy working with people, have a good sense of visual design and, in some specialized scientific or technical fields, have some knowledge of the specific field. The technical and esthetic skills required may be learned in a variety of ways. Frequently, those who aspire to be photographers use a combination of methods. Photography may be self taught. There are dozens of well written books on the procedures and techniques of photography. Photography may be learned at the hands of a "master" photographer via an apprentice or internship arrangement. Working professionals will occasionally take on a fledgling photographer to train in return for their services - or they may charge a fee for the opportunity, just as a school would. Probably the most frequently chosen route is the one of a formal education. Photography is taught through camera clubs, art associations, adult education, community colleges, two and four year colleges, professional schools, and vocational/technical schools. There are over 500 institutions of higher education which offer some kind of photographic education program. Information on schools, their size, cost, curriculum, etc., may be found in most high school guidance departments, public libraries, or directly from the schools themselves. An excellent school and career resource at Falmouth High School is the Guidance Information System (GIS). Professional photographers and photography instructors in the community can also be a good source of information regarding career direction and school selection.

Book School Photos in Liquid Time

Download or read book School Photos in Liquid Time written by Marianne Hirsch and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From clandestine images of Jewish children isolated in Nazi ghettos and Japanese American children incarcerated in camps to images of Native children removed to North American boarding schools, classroom photographs of schoolchildren are pervasive even in repressive historical and political contexts. School Photos in Liquid Time offers a closer look at this genre of vernacular photography, tracing how photography advances ideologies of social assimilation as well as those of hierarchy and exclusion. In Marianne Hirsch and Leo Spitzer’s deft analysis, school photographs reveal connections between the histories of persecuted subjects in different national and imperial centers. Exploring what this ubiquitous and mundane but understudied genre tells us about domination as well as resistance, the authors examine school photos as documents of social life and agents of transformation. They place them in dialogue with works by contemporary artists who reframe, remediate, and elucidate them. Ambitious yet accessible, School Photos in Liquid Time presents school photography as a new access point into institutions of power, revealing the capacity of past and present actors to disrupt and reinvent them.
