A Nordic Network has been tasked with covering relevant knowledge about the causes of the increase in mental distress among youth in the Nordic region, including knowledge about risk and protective factors for mental distress.As a conclusion to Mental Distress Among Nordic Youth Project, the Nordic Network is tasked with proposing a future joint Nordic research project that builds on the knowledge generated in connection with the Network's work on risk and protective factors for mental distress and effective cross-sectoral efforts.

In addition to developing and giving a tangible form to the Nordic health co-operation, the programme also involves tangible initiatives in the health and labour market areas. The two councils of ministers with main responsibility are the Council of Ministers for Education and Research (MR-U) and the Council of Ministers for Health and Social Affairs (MR-S).

The Paris Climate Change Conference of December 2015 and the EU’s goal of working towards a European Energy Union make this review particularly timely. It is also based on the Nordic countries’ own reviews of their national climate and energy policies. The geopolitical landscape is currently in a state of flux – global trade and climate policies are under pressure, and nationalist tendencies are emerging in many countries. This presents many challenges to Nordic energy co-operation, which has achieved ground-breaking results based on cross-border co-operation. Various studies have also shown that the Nordic Region has made similarly dramatic gains in terms of welfare. The time has come to assess how the Nordic countries can build on this success, despite adverse international trends. This review seeks to identify these challenges, present proposals for how the Nordic countries can move forward, and inspire further discussion and debate. Book excerpt: The Nordic countries have collaborated in setting guidelines for dietary composition and recommended intakes of nutrients for several decades through the joint publication of the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR). This 5th edition, the NNR 2012, gives Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for nutrients, and compared with earlier editions more emphasis has been put on evaluating the scientific evidence for the role of food and food patterns contributing to the prevention of the major diet-related chronic diseases. Recommendations on physical activity are included and interaction with physical activity has been taken into account for the individual nutrient recommendations wherever appropriate. A chapter on sustainable food consumption has been added. A Nordic perspective has been accounted for in setting the reference values.The NNR 2012 has used an evidence-based and transparent approach in assessing associations between nutrients and foods and certain health outcomes. Systematic reviews form the basis for the recommendations of several nutrients and topics, while a less stringent update has been done for others. The systematic reviews and individual chapters have been peer reviewed and the systematic reviews are published in the Food & Nutrition Research journal. The draft chapters were subject to an open public consultation. Recommendations have been changed only when sufficient scientific evidence has evolved since the 4th edition. The primary aim of the NNR 2012 is to present the scientific background of the recommendations and their application. A secondary aim is for the NNR 2012 to function as a basis for the national recommendations that are adopted by the individual

Book excerpt: Whether it is a doctor treating a patient for pneumonia, or a farmer administering antibiotics to pigs in an attempt to keep various diseases at bay, antibiotics are widely used and taken for granted in many sectors nowadays. This has not always been the case, and this will not be the case in the future if the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not curbed. The escalating and significant increase in the use of antibiotics has led to a global and growing challenge, in the form of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and microbes in many different areas. If the right policy decisions are not made today, the consequences may be grave in the decades to come. As many as one million people may die each year as a result of antibiotic resistance and the number is growing. The latest calculations show that if the current situation is allowed to continue unchecked, it will lead to a humanitarian and economic disaster. Some forecasts predict that by 2050, multi-resistant bacteria and microbes will kill up to 10 million people worldwide each year. The report 12 initiatives, Nordic co-operation on combating antimicrobial resistance, is a white paper adopted by the Nordic Council. It is developed on the basis of hearing “You don’t die from pneumonia, do you...?”, which took place on 6 December 2016 in the Parliament in Copenhagen, at the request of the Danish Presidency of the Nordic Council Presidium and the President of the Council, Henrik Dam Kristensen. Experts from all five Nordic countries and the appropriate academic environments attended. The report describes at strategy with 7 overall objectives that can be implemented through 12 well-founded tangible initiatives. The initiatives can be efficiently implemented through Nordic cooperation. The Nordic Council has declared its support for the initiatives and recommends the Nordic Council of Ministers to prepare and initiate the implementation.

As the Nordic energy systems are closely linked, working together on joint initiatives will lead to a green transition that is more cost-effective and socially sustainable than if the countries were each to achieve the goals individually. In 2020, the Nordic Council of Ministers for Energy Policy (MR-E) adopted seven focus areas as input into the action plan for Our Vision 2030. These will structure Nordic energy co-operation during the period covered by the programme and be at the heart of all of the work: - The green transition of the energy sector - Closer collaboration on research to aid the green transition - Nordic co-operation in the electricity market - Energy efficiency, technology and behavioural change - Working together on EU/EEA-related energy questions - Social acceptance of new energy plants and the green transition - The green transition of the transport sector.

Thus more senior citizens need to be cared for by still fewer young people of taxable age. This development undermines the financial sustainability of the Nordic welfare state and presents a major medium to long-term challenge for the Nordic countries, if the high welfare service levels are to be sustained in the decades to come. One of the solutions to this challenge could be the implementation of new welfare technologies and innovative solutions which can increase efficiency of service providers and deliver more value for money. The aim of the project is to increase knowledge about public-private partnerships in the five Nordic countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, with a focus on the welfare sectors in these countries. Focus is on the following sectors: children and youth, elderly and handicapped, disease prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation. The overall objective is to increase understanding of approaches, effects and perspectives in the use of public-private partnerships, in particular public-private innovation partnerships. This includes the use of public-private partnerships as a strategic tool for new business development for welfare solutions in the Nordic region.

Book excerpt: The Nordic Food Analysis Network project (NFAN, 2013–2016) focused on creating a common, simple communicational platform to share history and plans on chemical food analyses. This report describes the activities that have taken place in the area of chemical food analysis, for the national food composition databases of the Nordic countries, at the national level, since 2000 and specific activities of this network between the years of 2013–2016. This network picked fibre, iodine and sodium as specific nutrients to focus on during this project, and comparative analyses of selected Nordic food items were carried out during this project with external funding. The results of the activities are summarized in this project report.
