Book The Fundamental Principles of a Good Government

Download or read book The Fundamental Principles of a Good Government written by Jose Saint-Louis and published by Eloquent Books. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover through the new eye-opening book The Fundamental Principles of a Good Government how the dominant classes have used their economic power to maintain their social privilege. The book establishes a relationship between poverty and social injustice, examining how an ineffective government's bad social policies can and often do have disastrous consequences for the community. While it offers a social, political, and philosophical analysis of the kinds of human behavior that foster conditions for social instability, the book explains how the problems that impact individuals and families are both ethical and political. While working with low-income families and assessing their needs, author Jose Saint-Louis came to realize that the socio-economic gap that defines the life of the poor in America is mainly rooted in our domestic and international policies."I write this book to enlighten members of our community, from the rulers, to the governed. I strongly believe that humankind makes history, and can change the course of history by posing the foundation for a suitable social environment where human dignity is respected."Meanwhile, the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.About the Author: Jose Saint-Louis is the author of The Tragedy of a People, a Poetic Book; Christian Advocate, a Socio-religious Revue; and The Haitian Revolution in the Shaping of American Democracy. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and holds the Master of Divinity degree. He has started writing his next book, Race and Politics in a Multicultural Society.Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TheFundamentalPrinciplesOfAGoodGovernment.html

Book Principles of Politics Applicable to All Governments

Download or read book Principles of Politics Applicable to All Governments written by Benjamin Constant and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Constant (1767-1830) was born in Switzerland and became one of France's leading writers, as well as a journalist, philosopher, and politician. His colourful life included a formative stay at the University of Edinburgh; service at the court of Brunswick, Germany; election to the French Tribunate; and initial opposition and subsequent support for Napoleon, even the drafting of a constitution for the Hundred Days. Constant wrote many books, essays, and pamphlets. His deepest conviction was that reform is hugely superior to revolution, both morally and politically. While Constant's fluid, dynamic style and lofty eloquence do not always make for easy reading, his text forms a coherent whole, and in his translation Dennis O'Keeffe has focused on retaining the 'general elegance and subtle rhetoric' of the original. Sir Isaiah Berlin called Constant 'the most eloquent of all defenders of freedom and privacy' and believed to him we owe the notion of 'negative liberty', that is, what Biancamaria Fontana describes as "the protection of individual experience and choices from external interferences and constraints." To Constant it was relatively unimportant whether liberty was ultimately grounded in religion or metaphysics -- what mattered were the practical guarantees of practical freedom -- "autonomy in all those aspects of life that could cause no harm to others or to society as a whole." This translation is based on Etienne Hofmann's critical edition of Principes de politique (1980), complete with Constant's additions to the original work.

Book The Principles of Representative Government

Download or read book The Principles of Representative Government written by Bernard Manin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis of this original and provocative book is that representative government should be understood as a combination of democratic and undemocratic, aristocratic elements. Professor Manin challenges the conventional view that representative democracy is no more than an indirect form of government by the people, in which citizens elect representatives only because they cannot assemble and govern in person. The argument is developed by examining the historical moments when the present institutional arrangements were chosen from among the then available alternatives. Professor Manin reminds us that while today representative institutions and democracy appear as virtually indistinguishable, when representative government was first established in Europe and America, it was designed in opposition to democracy proper. Drawing on the procedures used in earlier republican systems, from classical Athens to Renaissance Florence, in order to highlight the alternatives that were forsaken, Manin brings to the fore the generally overlooked results of representative mechanisms. These include the elitist aspect of elections and the non-binding character of campaign promises.

Book The Government Class Book

Download or read book The Government Class Book written by Andrew White Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government Class Book: A Manual of Instruction in the Principles of Constitutional Government and Law; Part I, Principles of Government; Part II, the Government of Illinois The study of the principles of political science is a necessary part of a liberal education. In a country where the people govern themselves the science of gov ermnent is a necessary part of a common-school educa tion. In the United States the people elect their own law-makers and rulers, establish their own constitu: tions, and determine even the fundamental principles upon which men Shall be governed. The danger of entrusting such power to the ignorant has not failed of illustration in our States and cities. Having universal suffrage, the people must learn to govern themselves for the sake of their own preservation and welfare. Nor is a knowledge of the principles of legal science less necessary to every citizen. The laws of man know as little of mercy as the laws of nature, in that law never admits ignorance as an excuse for wrong. It is a proof of the essential justice of our system of juris prudence, 'that so many citizens pass safely through life, totally ignorant of the law, and relying merely upon their own sense of what should be. And yet every day gives proof that ignorance is always dan gercus. The study of such a work as this will not make a youth a lawyer, but it will fix in his mind a system of broad principles, which cannot fail to be useful practically. Book Public Service and Good Governance for the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Public Service and Good Governance for the Twenty First Century written by James L. Perry and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert analysis of American governance challenges and recommendations for reform Two big ideas serve as the catalyst for the essays collected in this book. The first is the state of governance in the United States, which Americans variously perceive as broken, frustrating, and unresponsive. Editor James Perry observes in his Introduction that this perception is rooted in three simultaneous developments: government's failure to perform basic tasks that once were taken for granted, an accelerating pace of change that quickly makes past standards of performance antiquated, and a dearth of intellectual capital that generate the capacity to bridge the gulf between expectations and performance. The second idea hearkens back to the Progressive era, when Americans revealed themselves to be committed to better administration of their government at all levels—federal, state, and local. These two ideas—the diminishing capacity for effective governance and Americans' expectations for reform—are veering in opposite directions. Contributors to Public Service and Good Governance for the Twenty-First Century explore these central ideas by addressing such questions as: what is the state of government today? Can future disruptions of governance and public service be anticipated? What forms of government will emerge from the past and what institutions and structures will be needed to meet future challenges? And lastly, and perhaps most importantly, what knowledge, skills, and abilities will need to be fostered for tomorrow's civil servants to lead and execute effectively? Public Service and Good Governance for the Twenty-First Century offers recommendations for bending the trajectories of governance capacity and reform expectations toward convergence, including reversing the trend of administrative disinvestment, developing talent for public leadership through higher education, creating a federal civil service to meet future needs, and rebuilding bipartisanship so that the sweeping changes needed to restore good government become possible.
