  • Author : Catherine Thinus-Blanc
  • Publisher : World Scientific

Download or read book Animal Spatial Cognition written by Catherine Thinus-Blanc and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?Cognitive Map? (Tolman, 1948) is a key notion in spatial processing studies. It refers to high level spatial representations. Although widely used, this term remains ambiguous. The aim of this book is two-fold: (1) to examine the most noteworthy studies (in laboratory settings) which have contributed during the last five decades to a better understanding of animal spatial representations; (2) to provide some hints for future research.Spatial tests designed by psychologists are useful tools for understanding the brain substrates of spatial memory. Conversely, brain treatments allow us to analyse the complex psychological mechanisms underlying spatial orientation. Within this interdisciplinary context, it is extremely important to take stock of a notion used (and sometimes misused) in cognitive neurosciences.

Book Mechanisms of Animal Discrimination Learning

Download or read book Mechanisms of Animal Discrimination Learning written by N. S. Sutherland and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms of Animal Discrimination Learning provides a review of the field of animal discrimination learning, with discussions into other areas such as generalization, partial reinforcement, and some aspects of comparative psychology. This book elaborates the origins of continuity-noncontinuity controversy, analysis of attentional learning, Lashley and Wade's account of generalization, and evidence for a two-process analysis of the ORE. The reversal and nonreversal shifts, response unit hypothesis, inconsistent reinforcement and extinction of choice behavior, and aims and problems of comparative psychology are likewise described This text likewise covers the Zeaman and House model, Lovejoy's Model III, determinants of generalization gradients, cognitive dissonance hypothesis, and theoretical relevance of comparative psychology. This publication is a good source for biologists and researchers concerned with animal discrimination learning.

This volume is the result of their efforts.

Book Aberrant Development in Infancy

Download or read book Aberrant Development in Infancy written by Norman R. Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, this volume deals with animals and human infants. The chapters reflect a mixture of issues and problems ranging from the significance of sucking responses in the newborn, the development of memory, effects of rearing conditions in monkeys, and brain damage in animals, to processes underlying abnormal development of language. While it appears the issues are diverse, there is actually a common theme. One question is posed: How and why does normal development fail to occur in some human infants? The chapters show that there are many causes of aberrations: physical or psychological trauma, disease, inheritance, and drugs. Although one may be primary, "multiple causation" would still appear to be a sound principle in developmental pathology.

Book Big Brains and the Human Superorganism

Download or read book Big Brains and the Human Superorganism written by Niccolo Leo Caldararo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines why humans have big brains, what big brains enable us to do, and how specialized brains are associated with eusociality in animals. It explores why brains expanded so slowly, and then why they stopped growing. This book whittles down the theories on brain size evolution to a few that represent testable hypotheses to identify logical and practical explanations for the phenomenon. At the core of this book is data derived from original, previously unpublished research on brain size in a number of social mammals. This data supports the idea that evolution of the brain in humans is the result of social interaction. This book also traces the products of the social brain: ideology, religion, urban life, housing, and learning and adapting to dense complex social interactions. It uniquely compares brain evolution in social animals across the animal kingdom, and examines the nature of the human brain and its evolution within the social and historical context of complex human social structures.
