This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution Napoleon in Literature Caricature There is no more fevered portion of the world's history than was comprehended in France between the fall of the Bastille and the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. The French Revolution was cosmopolitan. It was the protest of the ages against the growing usurpation of power. The hour developed a man. Admiration for a transcendent genius, gratitude for services to the nation, a crying need of order, made Napoleon Bonaparte emperor of the French. His downfall was due to the fact that he divorced liberty and civil equality, which were the principles of the French Revolution, and attempted the impossible in trying to make a nation free without making free the individuals who composed that nation. Book English Caricature and Satire on Napoleon Complete

Download or read book English Caricature and Satire on Napoleon Complete written by John Ashton and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curiously enough, it has never been practically settled whence the ancestors of Napoleon Bonaparte came. He, himself, cared little for the pride of birth, and when, during his Consulate, they manufactured for him a genealogy descending from a line of kings, he laughed at it, and said that his patent of nobility dated from the battle of Montenotte. But, still, one would think he ought to know, for family tradition is strong; and if it can be trusted, this is his own account. ‘One day Napoleon questioned Canova about Alfieri, and Canova found an opportunity to render an important service to Florence, c. “Sire,” said he, “authorise the President of the Academy of Florence to take care of the frescoes and pictures. I heartily wish it. That will reflect great honour on your Majesty, who, I am assured, is of a noble Florentine family.” At these words the Empress (Maria Louisa) turned towards her husband and said:—“What! are you not Corsican?” “Yes,” replied Napoleon, “but of Florentine origin.” Canova then said:—“The President of the Academy of Florence, the Senator Allessandria, is of one of the most illustrious houses in the country, which has had one of its ladies married to a Bonaparte, thus you are Italian, and we boast of it.” “I am, certainly,” added Napoleon.’ Prince Napoleon Louis Bonaparte (brother to the Emperor) published in 1830, at Florence, a French translation of an old book about the sack of Rome, 1527, which gives an account of the family of the writer. But Majorca also puts in a claim to the older Bonapartes; and in 1852, Don Antonio Furio, a learned man, Member of the Royal Academies of Belles Lettres of Barcelona and Majorca, &c., made a declaration as to ‘the rank, dignity, and extinction of the noble family of Bonapart in the island of Majorca;’ and quotes from a book kept in the archives of Palma, in which are preserved the armorial escutcheons of the noble families of the Island, the arms of Bonapart—which were Dexter, on a field Azure, six stars, Or, placed two by two, Sinister, on a field gules, a lion rampant, Or; and the Chief Or, bears a scared eagle, sable. He says the family came from Genoa to Majorca, in which island its members were considered noblemen, and they filled several distinguished offices. In a register of burials relating to knights and gentlemen, written in 1559, the antiquity and nobility of the Bonaparts are clearly authenticated; and it would seem from Don Furio’s account (for all of which he gives chapter and verse) that the learned jurisconsult Don Hugo Bonapart left Majorca and went to Corsica, where, in 1411, he was made Regent of the Chancery of that place; and, as he settled there, his name was inscribed in the Golden Book of France.

Of his perfect ability to beat down his fellow-countrymen in a bargain we already had ample proof of the profound contempt in which he held them we were never left in doubt. Dis is a dam country, he would say after each such encounter, twirling his moustache truculently. Ah! Dere is only one London! The French peasant regards Napoleon merely as a great leader and conqueror, created to be the father of soldiers, and aided, if not directly sent, by God, to show forth the power and the glory Of France. The Russian peasant, more thought ful by nature as well as less excitable and combative in temperament, admits that Napoleon was sent on earth by God, but connects him with one of the deep problems of life by using him to show the divine nature of sympa thy and pity, and the cruelty, im. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic social history of France in the Napoleonic period—now available in English to a new generation of readers Presented here is an English translation of a study that was part of a distinguished French series on the country's post-Revolution history. Unlike much Napoleonic literature that features the personality and foreign policy of the emperor, France under Napoleon describes the condition of France and the French people during the fifteen years immediately following their great revolution. Applying the methods of the new social history (Annales school), Louis Bergeron covers the political, administrative, social, economic, and cultural facets of the First Empire. He begins with the domestic program and institutions under Napoleon and the fervor of the new chief of state as he sought to establish a coherent, efficient, and thoroughly controlled regime. Bergeron then examines the opposition to his system and the reasons behind the imperfect realization of his ideal. It discusses population and demographic trends, social structure, and economic activity—all of which eluded Napoleon's grasp.
