Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism On the other hand, there is a real and interesting separation in the social philosophy of the two doctrines. The later theory asks that an additional right be as sured to the individual, and therefore that government assume one new function, and it bases its claim for these changes on an idea of social progress different from that of the Revolutionists. The following pages aim to demonstrate these like nesses and differences. If the matter they present ap pears insufficient or the result of immature judgment, it is hoped it will, in any event, be an inspiration for some stronger work along lines which, it seems to the writer, cannot but be helpful in adding to a better understanding of latter-day problems. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism A little more than a hundred years ago, there were in France groups of men radically opposed to the society they saw about them. These men were, moreover, passionately eager to impose upon the nation to which they belonged a new social order which they advocated. Although, strictly speaking, they had no formulated system for social reorganization, these revolutionists of '93 were fairly agreed upon a certain set of theories which have commonly been called the Principles of the French Revolution. The defenders of these principles were the French Irreconcilables of the last century. In France to-day there is a party numbering nearly two million voters. This party sends to the Chamber of Deputies some eighty representatives; it claims to have a municipal majority in Paris, in about thirty of the other large cities, and in twelve hundred of the smaller cities of France; seventy-eight or more among the daily and weekly journals of the nation are said to be devoted to its interests. Persons belonging to this party profess a political creed sharply criticising the established social order, which they stigmatize as retrograde in its influence on society, and enslaving to the individual. Book excerpt: The French Revolution is no dead event; in turning over the contemporary records of those tremendous days we feel that we are touching live things; from the yellowed pages voices call to us, voices that still vibrate with the passions that stirred them more than a century ago - here the desperate appeal for liberty and justice, there the trumpet-call of "King and Country"; now the story told with tears of death faced gloriously, now a maddened scream of rage against a fellow-man. When in all the history of the world until the present day has human nature shown itself so terrible and so sublime? And is not the fascination that amazing epoch has ever since exercised over the minds of men owing to the fact that the problems it held are still unsolved, that the same movements which originated with it are still at work amongst us? "What we learn to-day from the study of the Great Revolution, '' the anarchist Prince Kropotkin wrote in 1908, "is that it was the source and origin of all the present communist, anarchist, and socialist conceptions.'' Indeed Kropotkin goes so far as to declare that "up till now, modern socialism has added absolutely nothing to the ideas that were circulating among the French people between 1789 and 1794, and which it was tried to put into practice in the year II of the Republic (i.e. in the Reign of Terror).
