Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Review, Vol. 14: March 31, 1847 With these remarks I return to the subject of the hieroglyphics. The language of the ancient Egyptians was ancient Coptic, and it is somewhat remarkable that this language ceased to be orally practised among the modern Copts about a century since. Arabic gradually superseded it, and the sat speaker of Coptic died about seventy years ago. The ancient language is still, however, read in the churches of the Coptic community, with Arabic translations. Had it been entirely lost, the art of deciphering the hieroglyphics, and the important results which have been detailed as owing from that circumstance, would have been lost to the world for ever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Review, Vol. 3: 1845 Ive had intended to have entered into many subjects at some length, but the interest excited by the leading articles in our three last numbers has led to the transmission Of so many papers and reports, that we have been obliged, not only to extend the letter-press very considerably, and to encroach on our own space, but also to vary the type from the larger to the smaller size, in order to give room for several papers. Our present leader, therefore, will necessarily be limited accordingly. Shall the Freemasons' Quarterly be Changed to a Monthly Review? The arguments in favour Of such a change, have been warmly advocated by our readers in Edinburgh, Dublin, Oxford, Birmingham, Manchester and other places, but as no plan has been suggested to meet the consequent increased expenses, we must abide the event of the current year, when, if the prospect is sufficiently encouraging, the propriety Of a change shall be duly considered. The Additional Contributions to Grand Lodge - After two years' talking against time, this motion was carried by a considerable majority. There may be some who consider that the provinces should only be amerced in half contributions - but as it is proved that they fully share in the benefit, it is surely but right that they should share equally in the honour. It was a rare circumstance, that for the first time in our recollection it was thought necessary to direct an especial notice to be served on the provinces, notifying the motion, that they might not be taken by surprise. We, who work for the provinces, have a better Opinion Of them than to anticipate their objection to some provision for the widows of Freemasons, and look forward with con fidence to a confirmation of the minutes of the last Grand Lodge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Magazine, 1854, Vol. 2 We have, indeed, no discouraging remarks to ofl'er on the state of the Craft in general, but, as its kindly recognised interpreter as the almost sole medium of its intercommunica tion either with its own members or with those who 'have not yet tasted the cup of its mysteries - we venture, in all brotherly feeling, to say our say, and perhaps to grumble a little, at a few matters at which we feel every real working and upright Mason is as indignant as ourselves. Book Vatican Secret Diplomacy

Download or read book Vatican Secret Diplomacy written by Charles R. Gallagher and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the corridors of the Vatican on the eve of World War II, American Catholic priest Joseph Patrick Hurley found himself in the midst of secret diplomatic dealings and intense debate. Hurley’s deeply felt American patriotism and fixed ideas about confronting Nazism directly led to a mighty clash with Pope Pius XII. It was 1939, the earliest days of Pius’s papacy, and controversy within the Vatican over policy toward Nazi Germany was already heated. This groundbreaking book is both a biography of Joseph Hurley, the first American to achieve the rank of nuncio, or Vatican ambassador, and an insider’s view of the alleged silence of the pope on the Holocaust and Nazism. Drawing on Hurley’s unpublished archives, the book documents critical debates in Pope Pius’s Vatican, secret U.S.-Vatican dealings, the influence of Detroit’s flamboyant anti-Semitic priest Charles E. Coughlin, and the controversial case of Croatia’s Cardinal Stepinac. The book also sheds light on the powerful connections between religion and politics in the twentieth century.

Book Karl Marx Man and Fighter RLE Marxism

Download or read book Karl Marx Man and Fighter RLE Marxism written by Boris Nicolaievsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strife has raged about Karl Marx for decades, and never had it been so embittered as at the time of this book’s first publication, 1936. Marx had impressed his image on the time as not other had done. To some he was – and still is – a fiend, the arch-enemy of human civilisation, and the prince of chaos, while to others he is a far-seeing and beloved leader, guiding the human race towards a brighter future. The arena in which Marx was fought about in 1936 was in the factories, in the parliaments and at the barricades. In both camps, the bourgeois and the socialist, Marx was first of all, if not exclusively, the revolutionary. This book sets out to describe the life of Marx the fighter.

Book Political Censorship of the Arts and the Press in Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Political Censorship of the Arts and the Press in Nineteenth Century written by Robert Justin Goldstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-08-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Censorship of the Arts and the Press in Nineteenth-Century Europe presents a comprehensive account of the attempts by authorities throughout Europe to stifle the growth of political opposition during the nineteenth-century by censoring newspapers, books, caricatures, plays, operas and film. Appeals for democracy and social reform were especially suspect to the authorities, so in Russia cookbooks which refered to 'free air' in ovens were censored as subversive, while in England in 1829 the censor struck from a play the remark that 'honest men at court don't take up much room'. While nineteenth-century European political censorship blocked the open circulation of much opposition writing and art, it never succeeded entirely in its aim since writers, artists and 'consumers' often evaded the censors by clandestine circulation of forbidden material and by the widely practised skill of 'reading between the lines'.
