Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unlimited Coinage of Silver: Speech of Hon. A. J. Warner, of Ohio, in the House of Representatives, Saturday, May 3d, 1879 The act of 1873 did not in the slightest degree demonetize silver. The right to coin the silver dollar, which is now proposed to be authorized again, has always existed in this country; has never been taken away. This is a strange declaration, coming from the source it did. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Unlimited Coinage of Silver and the Trade Dollar 1879

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unlimited Coinage of Silver and the Trade-Dollar, 1879: Minutes of a Conference Between the Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures of the House of Representatives, and the Secretary of the Treasury and the Director of the Mint Secretary sherman. No; if silver coinage is made free at the rate of 16 of silver to 1 of gold we shall have a mono-metallic system of silver coinage excluding gold from circulation. Then, as a matter of course, the objection would cease; then the trade-dollar would be worth more than the standard dollar. That is, if you adopt the bullion value of sil ver as the sole standard in this country, then it makes no difference what is done with the trade-dollar; but as long as you maintain the gold standard or the present standard based upon the gold coin of 25% grains, the introduction of the trade-dollar, either as a coin or as the equal of the standard dollar, will be a discrimination in favor of the owners of this silver bullion in China and against our own miners to the extent that I have stated. Mr. Warner. That is, while silver is coined under existing law and regulations? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-02-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coinage of Gold and Silver: February 21, 1891-Indefinitely Postponed; February 23, 1891-Committed to the Committee of the Whole House on the State of the Union and Ordered to Be Printed The Secretary of the Treasury in his report for 1889 states that the surplus of silver in the world, above the amount used in the arts and coinage in all other countries than the United States was, for 1888, fine ounces. According to statement of Director of the Mint Leech the surplus in 1889, assuming that the coinage and use in the arts was no greater than in 1888, was ounces. We are persuaded that the amount used in the arts and in coinage outside of the United States exceeded that of 1888 to such an amount that the surplus was less than ounces. If these estimates are correct, under the present law there is provision for using the world's surplus, which is all that unlimited coinage could accomplish. The American product in 1888, as stated by the Secretary, was ounces. For 1889, according the report of the Director of the Mint, the American output was ounces. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Book The Great Transformation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'One of the most powerful books in the social sciences ever written. ... A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale

Introduction The Backbone of the Armed Forces To be a member of the United States Armed Forces--to wear the uniform of the Nation and the stripes, chevrons, or anchors of the military Services--is to continue a legacy of service, honor, and patriotism that transcends generations. Answering the call to serve is to join the long line of selfless patriots who make up the Profession of Arms. This profession does not belong solely to the United States. It stretches across borders and time to encompass a culture of service, expertise, and, in most cases, patriotism. Today, the Nation's young men and women voluntarily take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and fall into formation with other proud and determined individuals who have answered the call to defend freedom. This splendid legacy, forged in crisis and enriched during times of peace, is deeply rooted in a time-tested warrior ethos. It is inspired by the notion of contributing to something larger, deeper, and more profound than one's own self. Book Partnership for the Americas Western Hemisphere Strategy and U S Southern Command

Download or read book Partnership for the Americas Western Hemisphere Strategy and U S Southern Command written by James G. Stavridis and published by NDU Press. This book was released on 2014-02-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its creation in 1963, United States Southern Command has been led by 30 senior officers representing all four of the armed forces. None has undertaken his leadership responsibilities with the cultural sensitivity and creativity demonstrated by Admiral Jim Stavridis during his tenure in command. Breaking with tradition, Admiral Stavridis discarded the customary military model as he organized the Southern Command Headquarters. In its place he created an organization designed not to subdue adversaries, but instead to build durable and enduring partnerships with friends. His observation that it is the business of Southern Command to launch "ideas not missiles" into the command's area of responsibility gained strategic resonance throughout the Caribbean and Central and South America, and at the highest levels in Washington, DC.

Book Economics in One Lesson

Download or read book Economics in One Lesson written by Henry Hazlitt and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, Economics in One Lesson is an essential guide to the basics of economic theory. A fundamental influence on modern libertarianism, Hazlitt defends capitalism and the free market from economic myths that persist to this day. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the “Austrian School,” which includes Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich (F.A.) Hayek, and others, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Hazlitt wrote Economics in One Lesson, his seminal work, in 1946. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy which occurred more than 50 years after the initial publication of Economics in One Lesson. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong — and strongly reasoned — anti-deficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.
