Download or read book A Manual of Pahlavi written by Henrik Samuel Nyberg and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this "Manual of Pahlavi", containing a selection of Zoroastrian texts in Middle Iranian, appeared in the 1960s. The present volume, which has required extended preliminary research, gives a vocabulary of all the words found in these texts, with ample references to, and analyses of, the passages where they occur. Care has been taken to register all equivalents hitherto known in Old Iranian, in the Manichean texts, among the Armenian loanwords and in other West Iranian languages down to New Persian. Special attention has been paid to the traditions of the Zoroastrians themselves, both the linguistic tradition laid down in Pazand, neglected but authentic, and the interpretative tradition manifest in the Sanskrit versions. This Glossary comprises about 3,000 words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies presented in this volume deal with numerous and often undervalued aspects of multilingualism in Ancient Europe and the Mediterranean. Primarily, but not exclusively, they explore the impact of the great transnational languages, Greek and Latin, on numerous indigenous languages: the latter mostly disappeared apart from a number of written texts, often not well comprehensible, but at the same time provided the dominant languages with loanwords, some of them destined to enduring success. Moreover, Greek and Latin were remarkably affected by their mutual contact, with the complication that Greek was notoriously far from monolithic, and in some areas its different dialects intermingled with each other and with the local languages. The case studies of this volume were conducted in the frame of a European HERA research on Multilingualism and Minority Languages in Ancient Europe, which covered a number of very diverse areas, with an emphasis on Sicily and Southern Italy, Illyria, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace, Egypt and Asia Minor (also in medieval and modern times). This book makes indispensable reading for anyone with an interest in multilingualism and language contact in Ancient Europe.

Book excerpt: This is part I of the Sacred Books of the East Pahlavi Texts translation. It includes a number of crucial medieval Zoroastria. texts: the Bundahis, Selections of Zad-sparam, the Bahman Yast, an. the Shayast la-Shayast, as put into writing about the sixth century C.E. The Bundahis is of note because it is a collection of Zoroastria. traditions about the creation of the world. The Shayast la-Shayast deals with matters of ritual impurity, sin, and ritual. related to purification, including many cases related to dead bodies. The Bahman Yast is a prophetic text, which details thousands o. years of history, including the downfall and rebirth of the Zoroastrian faith. West compares these texts respectively to the Biblical books of Genesis, Leviticus and Revelation.
Download or read book Sasanian Persia written by Touraj Daryaee and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of profound importance in late antiquity, the Sasanian Empire is virtually unknown today, except as a counterpoint to the Roman Empire. In this highly readable history, Touraj Daryaee fills a significant gap in our knowledge of world history. He examines the Sasanians' complex and colourful narrative and demonstrates their unique significance, not only for development of Iranian civilization but also for Roman and Islamic history. The Sasanians were the last of the ancient Persian dynasties and are best known as the pre-eminent practitioners of the Zoroastrian religion. Founded by Ardashir l in 224 CE, the Sasanian Empire was the dominant force in the Middle East for several centuries until its last king, Yazdgerd lll, was defeated by the Muslim Arabs in the seventh century. In this concise yet comprehensive book, Touraj Daryaee provides an unrivalled account of Sasanian Persia. Drawing on extensive new sources, he paints a vivid portrait of Sasanian life and unravels the divergent strands that contributed to the making of this great empire. This new edition includes updated economic and political histories as well as several inscriptions that have been found in recent years.
