Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental investigation was undertaken to determine if the adhesive debond initiation stress could be predicted for arbitrary joint geometries. The analysis was based upon a threshold total strain-energy-release rate (Gth) concept. Two bonded systems were tested: T300/5208 graphite/epoxy adherends bonded with either EC-3445 or FM-300 adhesive. The Gth for each adhesive was determined from cracked-lap-shear (CLS) specimens by debond initiation tests. Finite-element analyses of various tapered CLS specimen geometries predicted the specimen stress at which the total strain-energy-release rate (GT) equaled Gth at the joint tip. Experiments verified the predictions. The approach described herein predicts the maximum stress at which an adhesive joint can be cycled yet not debond. Total strain-energy-release rate appeared to be the driving parameter for cyclic debonding and debond initiation in structural adhesives, and debond initiation and growth were found to occur with virtually no peel stress present.

Book excerpt: Since the advent of synthetic adhesives in the middle of the last century, the growth in their usage has been so phenomenal that a handbook, the International Plastics Selector-Adhesives. published by D.A.T.A. in 1991, lists some 5000 different adhesive formulations that are commercially available. Despite their wide usage, much is not well understood about adhesives and adhesive joint failure. A few observations relevant to this discussion of Fracture Mechanics Analysis of Adhesive Joints are: (a) The stress distribution in such joints is never as simple as often assumed, and the usually reported "standard test results" often completely ignore the most important aspects of the stress distribution. (b) Crack growth does not always initiate at the point of maximum stresses in an adhesive joint. (c) The locus of adhesive crack growth is often somewhat removed from the adhesive-substrate bond-line, but there are instances where it closely follows this bond-line. (d) Adhesive Fracture Mechanics analysis can provide significant information on the resolution of questions raised in these observations. This presentation will review some of the work in these areas by graduate students in our laboratory. Some of the cited work was accomplished by previous lab students. Other parts of the cited work are from ongoing research by current students. The presentation will endeavor to demonstrate that: (a) Adhesive Fracture Mechanics can be used to quantitatively predict the strength of adhesive joints and, more particularly, to elucidate the effects of such factors as adherend thickness, adhesive thickness (and variation), amount of overlap, geometric configuration, material discontinuities, etc. (b) Other factors being equal, crack growth tends to initiate at locations of maximum energy release rate irrespective of whether or not these are points of maximum stresses. (c) The preferred locus of crack growth is along those paths for which the energy release rate is a maximum. In each of these cases, results of a fracture mechanics analysis will be presented along with experimental verification of the analyses.

The advan tages and disadvantages of bonding are given, together with a sufficient understanding of the necessary mechanics and chemistry to enable the designer to make a sound engineering judgement in any particular case. The stresses in joints are discussed extensively so that the engineer can get sufficient philosophy or feel for them, or can delve more deeply into the mathematics to obtain quantitative solutions even with elasto plastic behaviour. A critical description is given of standard methods of testing adhesives, both destructively and non-destructively. The essen tial chemistry of adhesives and the importance of surface preparation are described and guidance is given for adhesive selection by me ans of check lists. For many applications, there will not be a unique adhesive which alone is suitable, and factors such as cost, convenience, produc tion considerations or familiarity may be decisive. A list of applications is given as examples. The authors wish to increase the confidence of engineers using adhesive bonding in load-bearing applications by the information and experience presented. With increasing experience of adhesives en gineering, design will become more elegant as weH as more fitted to its products.
