Book excerpt: Norway received its name from the nearby rural community of settlers from Norway in the area known as the Fox River Settlement. The village was the center of Norwegian immigration dating to 1834. Norwegian-American pioneer leader Cleng Peerson founded this second settlement in the Fox River Valley of Illinois.

Book The First Norwegian Settlements in America

Download or read book The First Norwegian Settlements in America written by Mike Palecek and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on The First Chapter of Norwegian Immigration, written by Rasmus Anderson in 1895. He was spellbound by tales his neighbors told about their pioneer life. He was the first professor of Scandinavian Studies anywhere in the United States. As old pioneers were dying off, he began a letter writing campaign to ask them to write down their memories. Anderson added excerpts of old interviews of pioneers from Billet-Magazin. This book, The First Norwegian Settlements in America is an abridged version of Anderson's book. The sequence has completely changed. Additional research has been added. Photos from the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library and public domain sources have added to more richly illustrate and add meaning to this work. If we want to understand our Norwegian-American roots, it is important to learn about our immigrant ancestors. Hopefully, this book will help broaden your understanding of your Nordic heritage.

Book Immigrants in American History 4 volumes

Download or read book Immigrants in American History 4 volumes written by Elliott Robert Barkan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 2217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia is a unique collection of entries covering the arrival, adaptation, and integration of immigrants into American culture from the 1500s to 2010. Few topics inspire such debate among American citizens as the issue of immigration in the United States. Yet, it is the steady influx of foreigners into America over 400 years that has shaped the social character of the United States, and has favorably positioned this country for globalization. Immigrants in American History: Arrival, Adaptation, and Integration is a chronological study of the migration of various ethnic groups to the United States from 1500 to the present day. This multivolume collection explores dozens of immigrant populations in America and delves into major topical issues affecting different groups across time periods. For example, the first author of the collection profiles African Americans as an example of the effects of involuntary migrations. A cross-disciplinary approach—derived from the contributions of leading scholars in the fields of history, sociology, cultural development, economics, political science, law, and cultural adaptation—introduces a comparative analysis of customs, beliefs, and character among groups, and provides insight into the impact of newcomers on American society and culture.

Book Norsemen Deep in the Heart of Texas

Download or read book Norsemen Deep in the Heart of Texas written by Gunnar Nerheim and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As historian Gunnar Nerheim states in his introduction, “Norway is a foreign country to Texans, and Texas is a foreign country to Norwegians. Neither in Norway nor Texas has there been any awareness that so many Norwegians settled in antebellum Texas.” Norsemen Deep in the Heart of Texas brings Norwegian settlement in Texas to light and in doing so offers the first-ever comprehensive history of Norwegians in Texas. Fluent in both English and Norwegian, Nerheim has done what no other historian has done by combining primary and secondary sources from both languages and both countries. A well-established European scholar, Nerheim examines these never-before-referenced sources, telling the story of Norwegian immigration to Texas, explaining the contexts of Norwegian immigration to Texas in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and uncovering its significance to the histories of both countries. The larger historical context reveals that immigration to Texas operated as part of dynamic circumstances on both sides of the Atlantic, including slavery and the Civil War. Drawn from the perspectives of both regions, the history of Norwegian settlement in Texas provide new insights into European immigration. Readers interested in Texas, Norwegian, and trans-Atlantic history, as well as nineteenth-century immigration, will find new horizons in Norsemen Deep in the Heart of Texas.
