For well over a century and a half after the death of Jesus there is not one shred of evidence to connect its learned author with the “disciple whom Jesus loved,” i.e., the author of Revelation. In fact, the Fourth Gospel is revelation in reverse, upside-down. The contrast of thought between the two evangels, as well as the harsh Hebraistic Greek of the Revelation, when confronted with the polished elegance of the Fourth Gospel are too glaring to be denied. The style of Alexandrian Philosophy and the mysticism of Christian Platonists, evident throughout the last gospel, are skilfully interwoven with Pauline Christianity and put into the mouth of Jesus. The beauty of the Fourth Gospel glows bright in the light of Alexandrian Philosophy. Moreover, the Fourth Gospel can neither establish the veracity of miracles, nor the insanity of Divine Revelation.

CHAPTER IV ECCLESIASTICAL AIMS THE Fourth Gospel closes with a short epilogue, added apparently when the work was first made public after the writer's death. One purpose of this epilogue, however we may explain it otherwise, is undoubtedly to present the Gospel to the world with some kind of official sanction. A body of men who can speak with acknowledged authority set their imprimatur on "the witness of this disciple." The fact is highly important, indicating as it does that the Church from the first accepted the Gospel as a manifesto. The evangelist had not spoken merely in his own name, but had laid down once for all the principles of the common faith. We have already seen that the polemic of the Gospel has a representative character. John identifies himself with the Church in its various antagonisms, taking for granted that he only defines the common Christian position. "We speak that which we know, and testify that which we have seen." It is a controversy of parties, -- the Church against the Jews and the Baptists. The arguments of the Gospel carry weight because they express the mind of the whole party, not simply that of the individual writer. In one respect, therefore, the judgment implied in the epilogue appears to be well founded. So far as it is a work of controversy, the Gospel was written deliberately in the name of the Church, and contains its authoritative reply to the criticisms of the hostile sects. There is reason to believe, however, that in a wider and in a more intimate sense John wrote as representing the Church. It might seem at first sight as if no work could have less bearing on mere ecclesiastical interests than this "spiritual Gospel." Book excerpt: The Fourth Gospel is deeply shaped by its remarkably high Christology. It depicts the earthly Jesus, the incarnate one, as fully divine. This unrelenting Christology has led interpreters, both ancient and modern, to question the historical value of John's Gospel. For many, the Gospel is just theology. It is to the vexed relationship between history and theology that Jörg Frey turns in Theology and History in the Fourth Gospel. John's theological obsession with Christology might suggest that history counts for little in the Gospel. But, as Frey argues, the Gospel's clear and central claim is that John narrates the story of Jesus of Nazareth, his ministry, and his death, as "factual," and that this narrated "history" is foundational for the Christian message. Frey traces the Gospel's use of the available historical tradition by chiefly drawing from Mark and the Johannine community. Even if the Gospel of John used this received witness in a remarkably free manner, replotting and renarrating traditional episodes and even creatively staging new episodes, Frey contends that the historical life and person of Jesus remain central to John's enterprise. In the end, Frey warns that Johannine interpretation will miss the intention of the Gospel and the interpretive perspective of the evangelist if it remains preoccupied merely with questions of historical accuracy. The interpretive goal is to "let John be John," and, as Frey shows, readers will always yield to the priority of theology over history in the Fourth Gospel. In John's telling of the Christ story, the significance of history lies precisely in its disclosure of theological meaning, just as the significance of the historical Jesus is only understood in the theological language of Christology.
