Continuing the creative nonfiction narrative she began in her first book, All Bones Be White, Judith Shearer--whose family owned slaves--teams up with Derek Boyd Hankerson--some of whose family were slaves--to reveal Henrys motivations in the second part of an action-packed trilogy. In the book, youll learn why some blacks fought for the South during the Civil War, how DNA testing is helping uncover new information about the past, and the black experience in the Southern states leading up to our nations deadliest war. More importantly, youll find out what happened to Cassy, the Kentucky slave who was put on trial for allegedly killing a white woman. Henry did his best to save her life, but what happened would change the course of his life. Delve into an important story thats been forgotten for too long, and gain a clearer picture of what the South was like for blacks before and during the nations split with Belonging: The Civil Wars South We Never Knew.

Book Reform Identity and Narratives of Belonging

Download or read book Reform Identity and Narratives of Belonging written by Arkotong Longkumer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reform, Identity and Narratives of Belonging focuses on the Heraka, a religious reform movement, and its impact on the Zeme, a Naga tribe, in the North Cachar Hills of Assam, India. Drawing upon critical studies of ‘religion', cultural/ethnic identity, and nationalism, archival research in both India and Britain, and fieldwork in Assam, the book initiates new grounds for understanding the evolving notions of ‘reform' and ‘identity' in the emergence of a Heraka ‘religion'. Arkotong Longkumer argues that ‘reform' and ‘identity' are dynamically inter-related and linked to the revitalisation and negotiation of both ‘tradition' legitimising indigeneity, and ‘change' legitimising reform. The results have deepened, yet challenged, not only prevailing views of the Western construction of the category ‘religion' but also understandings of how marginalised communities use collective historical imagination to inspire self-identification through the discourse of religion. In conclusion, this book argues for a re-evaluation of the way in which multi-religious traditions interact to reshape identities and belongings. >

Book French Indian Wars in Maine

Download or read book French Indian Wars in Maine written by Michael Dekker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering nearly a century of conflict, this history chronicles the tragic, epic struggle for the land that would become Maine. For eight decades, a power struggle raged across a frontier on the north Atlantic coast now known as the state of Maine. Between 1675 and 1759, British, French, and Native Americans soldiers clashed in six distinct wars to claim the strategically vital region. In French and Indian Wars in Maine, historian Michael Dekker sheds light on this dark, tragic and largely forgotten struggle that laid the foundation of Maine. Though the showdown between France and Great Britain was international in scale, the local conflicts in Maine pitted European settlers against Native American tribes. Native and European communities from the Penobscot to the Piscataqua Rivers suffered brutal attacks. Countless men, women and children were killed, taken captive or sold into servitude. The native people of Maine were torn asunder by disease, social disintegration and political factionalism as they fought to maintain their autonomy in the face of unrelenting European pressure.
