It did not reinstate the Second Edwardian Prayer Book in its entirety, but incorporated elements from the First Edwardian Prayer Book so worship was not as Reformed as many clerics wanted. It was passed in law on April 28th, 1559 to be used from St John the Baptist's Day (June 24th). This current book is the text of that 1559 book, except that the Bible readings are not given in full, only the references. It also has appendices of prayers composed and added during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I for various occasions (e.g. the accession of the Queen, thanksgiving after a rebellion) or for specific groups such as the defence forces.

It was formed in 1840 and disbanded in 1855 when its work was completed. Named after Matthew Parker -- the first Elizabethan Archbishop of Canterbury, who was known as a great collector of books -- the stimulus for the foundation of the society was provided by the Tractarian movement, led by John Henry Newman and Edward B. Pusey. Some members of this movement spoke disparagingly of the English Reformation, and so some members of the Church of England felt the need to make available in an attractive form the works of the leaders of that Reformation.
