Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olympic art competitions were part of the Olympic programme for 36 years in the first half of the twentieth century. According to sport history research, one of the reasons for their suspension was the participation of unknown artists. A careful analysis of the sources used by sport historians reveals that little is known about the artists. Even less is known about female artists in this context. Investigating the example of the German sculptress Renée Sintenis (1888-1965), medalist of the 1928 Olympic art competitions, is an attempt to address this research gap. Furthermore, the paper illustrates the circumstances under which female artists participated in the Olympic art competitions, evidencing that the artistic competitions had not been a topic on the agenda of the International Olympic Committee. Importantly, it also demonstrates that Pierre de Coubertin's artistic family environment influenced his thinking about female artists in the Olympic art competitions.

It reveals the philosophical background of their existence within the Summer Olympics and their relation to the idea of kalokagathia. The article describes the reasons for their origin and how the founder of the modern Olympic Movement Pierre de Coubertin succeeded in pushing this idea forward. Czech and Czechoslovak artists were frequent participants in the competitions. In total, works by more than 50 Czechoslovak artists were presented and some were remarkably successful. Two composers Josef Suk and Jaroslav Křička and a sculptor Jakub Obrovský were even awarded Olympic medals in the 1930s. The article aims to present a lesser known but important place of art competitions in the history of the modern Olympic Movement and to recall the achievements of Czech and Czechoslovak artists.

This tradition, which lasted through the seven Summer Olympic Games held from 1912 to 1948, found artists competing for gold much as athletes do now. These artists represented their nation in judged competitive events showcasing artistic works. In its initial form, the 'pentathlon of the muses,' as it was called, included competitive events in architecture, musical composition, sculpture, painting and literature. This paper considers the history of these arts competitions and their eventual demise as a study in cultural policy, arguing that no understanding of cultural policy is sufficient unless it considers the rhetorical factors that contribute to its formation.
