Book The Forgotten Lawmen Part 2

Download or read book The Forgotten Lawmen Part 2 written by D. B. McCrea and published by Forgotten Lawmen. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officer McCrea is starting his eighth year of service as a South Dakota Game Warden. His status as a na ve, rookie officer is in the distant past. He has matured professionally and has taken on additional, high-liability endeavors such as certified firearms instructor, head range master, and use of deadly force instructor. After just eight years he is bestowed with a tremendous professional honor: 1991 Wildlife Officer of the Year. He received this highest honor for his outstanding service to the public and his developing expertise in wildlife law enforcement. But his professionalism and dedication have come at a cost. Warden McCrea not only has to battle against committed, unrepentant poachers, he realizes he has to battle against two new and unexpected foes. The first is the ugly and demoralizing actions of state politicians, some of whom seek to diminish, even destroy, his profession. The second, and most disheartening, battle is waged against elements within his own agency. Specifically, the corrupt, unreasonable, often toxic actions and expectations of unsympathetic co-workers who simply refuse to recognize the seemingly endless demands placed on Warden McCrea and his fellow district game wardens. All the while Warden McCrea is engaged in a mission to catch and hold poachers accountable. That mission will bring him into contact with some of the most vicious, dangerous, and desperate outlaws in his district. Some will try their best to kill him. One is a serial killer. Against all odds, Warden McCrea perseveres and survives. The reason he survives so many close calls and near misses will shock and surprise readers. It is counter-intuitive, especially in the present-day environment where law enforcement officers are judged guilty until proven innocent by a highly-skeptical public. So get ready to experience a wild and largely unpredictable ride where danger and uncertainty is often just around the next corner. Go where Warden McCrea goes. Contact the people he contacts. After reading his many harrowing, true-to-life accounts, be prepared to answer the most compelling and challenging questions Warden McCrea had to ask and reconcile every time he geared up and went on duty: Will I survive my shift? Will I make it home safely? Am I making a difference? Is what I'm doing worth it? Does anyone care?

Book The Forgotten Lawmen Part 1

Download or read book The Forgotten Lawmen Part 1 written by D. B. McCrea and published by Forgotten Lawmen. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 chronicles my first seven years as a state game warden, beginning in the Moody County (Flandreau) Game Warden District in 1983. I was only 23 years old and had accepted the assignment knowing my district had been without a game warden living and working within its boundaries for just shy of 25 years. I was entering a lion's den of dangerous poachers who had grown accustomed to poaching with imputiny. I intended to change that mindset, and I eventually did. But the journey came with a very steep personal cost. I had to fight for communal acceptance almost as much as I had to fight the poachers. My first three years were fraught with vicious rumors. I had to overcome the rumors by going to work each day and slowly but surely earn the trust of the public. I did finally earn their trust. The story is scary, funny, dark, sad, and joyful. It will bring the reader's emotions to the surface and help them better understand, and appreciate, the game warden profession!

Book excerpt: Two police officers that did stints in detectives decided they wanted to go back to a front line/first responder status in the department. There is a notable age difference between them but due to similar attitudes and motivations they became friends years ago. By choice they end up on the same patrol squad, with the older as the others supervisor. The two no matter how hard they try and sometimes no matter how hard they try not to, get into very dangerous, frustrating and sometimes even comedic situations. Unfortunately being a police officer isn’t very popular in current times. These officers were active in the mid 90’s and the public was a little more supportive but police administrations weren’t necessarily so. No matter what the era, persons in higher stations do not want to lose their positions due to the actions of over zealous underlings. These two keep trying to do things right and the right things, but due to some frail human qualities and a thing called Murphy’s Law, things do not usually end very well for them. If you have any sense of right and wrong or what’s fair and what isn’t, you should find yourself cheering and hoping they will survive and over come all adversities. If not you may be more pragmatic and think they are morons and should have known better. Because, realistically they have no one else to blame but each other, for putting themselves in those positions. Judge for yourself.

Book excerpt: Harry Morse - gunfighter, manhunter, sleuth - was among the West's most famous lawmen. Elected sheriff of Alameda County, California, in 1864, he went on to become San Francisco's foremost private detective. His career spanned five decades. In this biography, John Boessenecker brings Morse's now-forgotten story to light, chronicling not only the lawman's remarkable adventures but also the turbulent times in which he lived. Armed only with raw courage and a Colt revolver, Morse squared off against a small army of desperadoes and beat them at their own game. He shot to death the notorious bandidos Narato Ponce and Juan Soto, outgunned the vicious Narciso Bojorques, and pursued the Tiburcio Vasquez gang for two months in one of the West's longest and most tenacious manhunts. Later, Morse captured Black Bart, America's greatest stagecoach robber. Fortunately, Harry Morse loved to tell of his feats. Drawing on Morse's diaries, memoirs, and correspondence, Boessenecker weaves the lawman's colorful accounts into his narrative. Rare photographs of outlaws and lawmen and of the sites of Morse's exploits further enliven the story. A significant contribution to both western history and the history of law enforcement, Lawman is also an in-depth treatment of Hispanic crime and its causes, immigration, racial prejudice, and police brutality - issues with which California, and the nation, still grapple today.

Book excerpt: Take a fascinating deep dive into the dark world of forensic science as experts team up to solve the identity of an unknown woman by exploring the rapidly evolving techniques being used to break the most notorious cold cases. Fans of true crime shows like CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds, and Law and Order know that when it comes to “getting the bad guy” behind bars, your best chance of success boils down to the strength of your evidence—and the forensic science used to obtain it. Beyond the silver screen, forensic science has been used for decades to help solve even the most tough-to-crack cases. In 2018, the accused Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo, was finally apprehended after a decades-long investigation thanks to a very recent technique called forensic genealogy, which has since led to the closure of hundreds of cold cases, bringing long-awaited justice to victims and families alike. But when it comes to solving these incredibly difficult cases, forensic genealogy is just the tip of the iceberg—and many readers have no idea just how far down that iceberg goes. For Laurah Norton, forensic science was always more of a passion than anything else. But after learning about a mishandled 1990s cold case involving missing twins, she was spurred to action, eventually creating a massively popular podcast and building a platform that helped bring widespread attention and resources to the case. LAY THEM TO REST builds on Laurah’s fascination with these investigations, introducing readers to the history and evolution of forensic science, from the death masks used in Ancient Rome to the 3-D facial reconstruction technology used today. Incorporating the stories of real-life John & Jane Does from around the world, Laurah also examines how changing identification methods have helped solve the most iconic cold cases. Along the way readers will also get to see Laurah solve a case in real time with forensic anthropologist Dr. Amy Michael, as they try to determine the identity of “Ina” Jane Doe, a woman whose head was found in a brush in an Illinois park in 1993. More than just a chronicle of the history of forensics, LAY THEM TO REST is also a celebration of the growing field of experts, forensic artists, and anthropologists (many of whom Laurah talks to in the book), who work tirelessly to bring closure to these unsolved cases. And of course, this book asks why some cases go unsolved, highlighting the “missing missing,” the sex workers, undocumented, the cases that so desperately need our attention, but so rarely get it. Engrossing, informative, heartbreaking, and hopeful, LAY THEM TO REST is a deep dive into the world of forensic science, showing readers how far we’ve come in cracking cases and catching killers, and illuminating just how far we have yet to go.

Book Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases 1934 1970

Download or read book Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases 1934 1970 written by Michael Newton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of 2007 called for review and reinvestigation of "violations of criminal civil rights statutes that occurred not later than December 31, 1969, and resulted in a death." The U.S. Attorney General's review observed that date, while examining cases from 1936 (a date not specified in the Till Act) onward. In selecting violations for review, certain "headline" cases were included while others meeting the same criteria were not considered. This first full-length survey of American civil rights "cold cases" examines unsolved racially motivated murders over nearly four decades, beginning in 1934. The author covers all cases reviewed by the federal government to date, as well as a larger number of cases that were ignored without official explanation.

Book Eternity at the End of a Rope

Download or read book Eternity at the End of a Rope written by Clifford R. Caldwell and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1819 over 3,000 souls found their personal “eternity at the end of a rope” in Texas. Some earned their way. Others were the victim of mistaken identity, or an act of vigilante justice. Deserved or not, when the hangman’s knot is pulled up tight and the black cap snugged down over your head it is too late to plead your case. This remarkable story begins in 1819 with the first legal hanging in Texas. By 1835 accounts of lynching dotted the records. Although by 1923 legal execution by hanging was discontinued in favor of the electric chair, vigilante justice remained a favorite pastime for some. The accounts of violence are numbing. The cultural and racial implications are profound, and offer a far more accurate, unbiased insight into the tally of African-American and Hispanic victims of mob violence in the Lone Star State than has ever been presented. Many of these deeds were nothing short of morbid theater, worthy of another era. This book is backed up by years of research and thousands of primary source documents. Includes Index and Bibliography.

Book Law Enforcement Perpetrated Homicides

Download or read book Law Enforcement Perpetrated Homicides written by Tom Barker and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police violence of all types receives much attention from the media, and this is especially true for police homicides that often lead to demonstrations and protests. Police violence is a volatile, recurring social justice issue that often receives media attention, leads to demonstrations or protests and increases the tension between law enforcement agencies and the community they serve. Tom Barker examines police homicide and the different behavior patterns that lead to it, ranging from misadventure to intent. To better understand this complex issue, Barker has created 3 main categories: accidental homicides, justifiable homicides and criminal homicides. Barker includes a variety of cases from accidental deaths involving careless, reckless or negligent law enforcement officers to murders committed by LEOs engaged in organized crime or serial sexual homicides. This book will be of interest to those studying criminology, criminal justice, sociology, political science, etc.

Download or read book Texas Rangers written by Bob Alexander and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors Bob Alexander and Donaly E. Brice grappled with several issues when deciding how to relate a general history of the Texas Rangers. Should emphasis be placed on their frontier defense against Indians, or focus more on their role as guardians of the peace and statewide law enforcers? What about the tumultuous Mexican Revolution period, 1910-1920? And how to deal with myths and legends such as One Riot, One Ranger? Texas Rangers: Lives, Legend, and Legacy is the authors’ answer to these questions, a one-volume history of the Texas Rangers. The authors begin with the earliest Rangers in the pre-Republic years in 1823 and take the story up through the Republic, Mexican War, and Civil War. Then, with the advent of the Frontier Battalion, the authors focus in detail on each company A through F, relating what was happening within each company concurrently. Thereafter, Alexander and Brice tell the famous episodes of the Rangers that forged their legend, and bring the story up through the twentieth century to the present day in the final chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true crime account of a mass shooting by gangster brothers which resulted in the deaths of six police officers in Depression-era Missouri. “In all the annals of preservation of the peace there is no story that runs more gallantly than this.” —Springfield Leader, January 4, 1932 As dusk fell on a bitterly cold night during the Great Depression, a posse of ten local lawmen approached two brothers holed up in an isolated Missouri farmhouse. Minutes later, six officers were dead, three were wounded, and the outlaws had escaped. After a wild car chase through Oklahoma and across Texas, police finally surrounded Harry and Jennings Young in their Houston hideout. The brutal killings attracted the national press (at first Pretty Boy Floyd was rumored to be involved) and the “carnival of carnage” that became known as the Young Brothers Massacre represented the highest number of law enforcement officers killed on a single day until September 11, 2001. Even in the hardscrabble Ozarks, a region historically known for frontier justice and vigilante activity, these crimes caused a sensation, and the Young brothers briefly joined the ranks of infamy with Bonnie and Clyde and other famous outlaws. Author Bruce Davis, a third-generation Methodist minister from Springfield, Missouri, became fascinated with this forgotten case after noticing a memorial to the six fallen police officers in his local police station. He has devoted this account, his first book, to telling the whole story and honoring the brave lawmen who died in their attempts to exact justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2021 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards (History, Other)** Lawman or Outlaw? At times, the black-hatted “villains” and white-hatted “good guys” of the Old West were one and the same. Often it was difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish who was who. Sheriff Wyatt Earp stole horses and ran brothels. Albuquerque’s first town marshal, Milton Yarberry, was accused of murder and subsequently “jerked to Jesus.” Burt Alvord, town marshal of Willcox, Arizona, and friends, robbed a train. Alvord then deputized these same friends into a posse to apprehend the robbers. It came as no surprise when his posse came up empty handed. Justice Hoodoo Brown and Deputy JJ Webb ruled Las Vegas as leaders of the Dodge City Gang until they were run out of town by citizens fed up with their type of justice. “Mysterious” Dave Mather and even two of the Dalton Gang spent time behind a badge, as well as behind bars. When Outlaws Wore Badges explores the double lives of outlaw lawmen through some of the West’s most memorable frontier characters.
