Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Language of the Heart, Trysh Travis explores the rich cultural history of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and its offshoots and the larger "recovery movement" that has grown out of them. Moving from AA's beginnings in the mid-1930s as a men's fellowship that met in church basements to the thoroughly commercialized addiction treatment centers of today, Travis chronicles the development of recovery and examines its relationship to the broad American tradition of self-help, highlighting the roles that gender, mysticism, and bibliotherapy have played in that development.

Book The Forgotten Language

Download or read book The Forgotten Language written by Erich Fromm and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm investigates the universal language of symbols, expressed through dream and myths, and how it illuminates our humanity. In this study, Erich Fromm opens up the world of symbolic language, “the one foreign language that each of us must learn.” Understanding symbols, he posits, helps us reach the hidden layers of our individual personalities, as well as connect with our common human experiences. By grasping the symbolic language of dreams, Fromm explains, we can then also understand the deeper wisdom of myths, art, and literature. This also gives us access to what we, and our society, usually repress. Fromm shares the history of dream interpretations, and demonstrates his analysis of many types of dreams. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erich Fromm including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Book A Christ Centered Home

Download or read book A Christ Centered Home written by L. Hannah Stoddard and published by Joseph Smith Foundation. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the founding of the Joseph Smith Foundation is an untold, inspirational story of a software engineer father who felt called to uphold the Prophet Joseph Smith & the Restoration with only his homeschool family as his production team! Now his children tell candid stories of what it was like growing up with the Joseph Smith Foundation—from video editing, research, and book writing to the many miracles along the way. This heartfelt narrative also embraces the challenges facing many families today: divorce, mental illness, abuse, teen struggles, a loss of a child, cancer, slander, betrayal, and financial hardship. Hannah, Leah, and Isaiah also share their individual conversions to the Gospel, along with their witness that the Gospel of Jesus Christ holds the answers to solve even the most difficult, the most heart-breaking, and the most traumatic of situations. From a family team—a dad with his kids—came the Joseph Smith Foundation and many other projects that point church members to gospel principles, blessing the lives of thousands in the Church today. This book is an inspiring guide for families to discover their own mission and inspire their youth to change the world—a testimony that the God of Israel will prevail! James F. Stoddard III was a visionary leader who felt from a very young age that he had a mission to perform. He began an intense study of the gospel before his teen years and later committed all of his time and resources to defend the Restoration. From the time he was a 13-year-old young man, he invested hours, days, weeks, and years into studying forgotten teachings from inspired prophets and presidents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Then, he decided to try something revolutionary! Together, he and his family would apply these teachings and live their counsel practically. Not just infusing gospel principles into school and career, but actually building his family's entire lives—diet, education, work, recreation, entertainment, etc.—around, on, and with the Rock of Revelation. He ‘experimented on the word’ by creating a home with exceptionally high standards, a home focused on consecrated service, a home that became a productive center for missionary work, entrepreneurial business, and worldwide teaching. He hit upon a secret that many may overlook: his mission to change the world would be performed with and through his family! A Christ-Centered Home is the heartfelt story told by some of his children documenting the joy—even in the midst of suffering and pain—that is possible when a family raises the bar in their standards, lives the principles of Jesus Christ, consecrates their time and talents, and follows in the footsteps of the Master, Jesus Christ. A message of hope that the Gospel can transform and heal every family in every situation.

Book The Language of Trauma in the Psalms

Download or read book The Language of Trauma in the Psalms written by Danilo Verde and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, the field of trauma studies has shed new light on biblical texts that deal with individual and collective catastrophe. In The Language of Trauma in the Psalms, Danilo Verde advances the conversation, moving beyond the emphasis on healing that prevails in most literary trauma studies. Using the lens of cognitive linguistics and combining insights from trauma studies and redaction criticism, Verde explores how trauma is expressed linguistically in the book of Psalms, how trauma-related language was rooted in ancient Israel’s external realities, and how psalms helped define Yehud’s cultural trauma in the Persian period (539–331 BCE). Rather than assuming the psalmists’ personal experiences are reflected in these texts, Verde focuses on the linguistic strategies used to express trauma in the Psalms, especially references to the body and highly dramatic metaphors. Current analyses often approach trauma texts as tools intended to help sufferers heal. Verde contends that many group laments in the book of Psalms were transmitted not only to heal but also to wound the community, ensuring that the pain of a previous generation was not forgotten. The Language of Trauma in the Psalms shifts our understanding of trauma in biblical texts and will appeal to literary trauma scholars as well as those interested in ancient Israel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to examine how Sufi thought might provide critical understanding of contemporary life and a pathway towards the recovery of a more meaningful existence. Rumi’s mystical teachings are of great value at a time of rampant materialism and indiscriminate consumerism, and have the potential to illuminate the precarious state of the world, as well as revitalize contemporary social critique, eco-philosophy and bio-semiotics in what is increasingly being regarded as a post-secular age.

Book The Pure Language of the Heart

Download or read book The Pure Language of the Heart written by Annemieke Meijer and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of Sentimentalism in the Netherlands. Taking for its starting point the polemic between Rhijnvis Feith, the champion of the Dutch Sentimental vogue, and his chief opponent Willem Emmery de Perponcher (a polemic that lasted from 1786 to 1789), the author places the Dutch debate over Sentimentalism in a wider socio-cultural context. The Dutch had their own version of Sentimentalism. Its specific nature, and the themes that were touched upon in the debate which it evoked, are here described and analysed against the European background of English Sensibility and German Empfindsamkeit. The Pure Language of the Heart also discusses authors such as Elisabeth Maria Post and Jacob Eduard de Witte. It traces the vocabulary of eighteenth-century Dutch sentimental discourse, and contains an extensive bibliography of contemporary material relating to the Sentimental.

  • Author : Erich Fromm
  • Publisher : Open Road Media

Download or read book The Heart of Man written by Erich Fromm and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed social psychologist and New York Times–bestselling author of The Art of Loving discusses the nature of evil and humanity’s capacity for it. Originally published in 1964, The Heart of Man was influenced by turbulent times. Average Americans were suffering from different forms of evil, including a rise in juvenile delinquency. On a grander scale, the threat of nuclear war loomed over the nation, and President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. What could drive humanity to do things such as these? In The Heart of Man, renowned humanist philosopher and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm investigates man’s capacity to destroy, his narcissism, and his incestuous fixation. He expands upon ideas he presented in Escape from Freedom, Man for Himself, and The Art of Loving, and examines the essence of evil, as well as the choice between good and evil. He also explores man’s ability to destroy and further considers freedom, aggression, destructiveness, and violence. “The Heart of Man questions human nature itself, from the forms of violence that plague it to individual and social narcissism to how the positive value of “love of life” can potentially outweigh the destructive “syndrome of decay” caused by the love of death and other harmful tendencies of thought.” —Midwest Book Review
